Wow! There's a Lot to Read This Month!
This is one of those updates where there are sooooooo many titles for you to explore. I almost dare you to see if you cannot find a book that you want to consider for your next book group discussion!
PLUS we have the video and leave behinds for our semiannual Book Group Speed Dating program.
Read on and ENJOY! And we hope to see you at one of the upcoming events spotlighted below.
Last Friday, we hosted our 15th Annual Book Group Speed Dating event for booksellers, librarians, book club leaders and bloggers. Representatives from five publishers presented 31 titles perfect for book groups that will be published between now and November. You can watch the event here --- and if you would like to hear from a specific publisher, we have included timestamps for each of them.
To learn more about the books, click here to access a PDF of the PowerPoint presentation of the featured titles, as well as an Excel spreadsheet that lists the books both by publisher and alphabetically by title, along with a sheet to take notes.
This is your last Reading Group Guides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Wednesday, June 24th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Bruce Holsinger, and he will discuss his national bestseller, CULPABILITY, an Oprah’s Book Club pick and a Bookreporter.com Bets On title.
After I talk to Bruce, we will give readers the chance to share a question for him on screen. We have special sign-in directions for these attendees, and they will get to chat with Bruce in our “backstage green room” before the program starts. Then we will turn to questions that have been dropped into Zoom’s Q&A feature. Click here to register for the event.
If you would like to ask Bruce a question, please fill out this form by Wednesday the 24th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city, state, email address and phone number, as well as your question. And indicate if you would like to be on camera or off.
This also is your last newsletter reminder to sign up for our “Bookaccino Live” Summer Preview evening event, which we are hosting TOMORROW, Wednesday, June 17th at 8pm ET.
I will present a number of books releasing this summer that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. Included will be fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction. Click here to register for the program.
As we do with all of our “Bookaccino Live” book preview events, those who join us live will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize.
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Lisa See, whose latest novel, DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON, will be a Bets On selection. This time, Lisa turns her attention to the idea of female friendship as told by three different Chinese women --- Moon, Dove and Petal --- who were inspired by real people. The book is rooted in the 1871 Chinese Massacre in Los Angeles, which has been largely erased from public memory and not taught in history classes.
Lisa first explored the massacre over 30 years ago while researching ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, where it appeared in a single paragraph. She was later invited by the mayor to serve on an advisory board for a memorial commemorating what became known as the “Night of Horrors.” The novel grew from both deep personal family history and a sense of compulsion to recover a deliberately suppressed historical event.
Click here to watch the interview or here to listen to the podcast. Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter. In the meantime, click here for the discussion guide and here to read our review on Bookreporter.
Also, visit Lisa’s website for much more about the book, including her “Step Inside” feature, which shares information, articles, photos and videos that invite readers even further into the Chinese experience in America in the 1870s. And be sure to check out Lisa’s book tour schedule, which has plenty of in-person events throughout the country. I will be at her event in Manasquan, NJ on Thursday night. If you are there, please say hello.
I also had the pleasure of talking to Ruta Sepetys about her new book, A FORTUNE OF SAND, which is her first adult novel.
Set in 1920s Detroit during the Prohibition era, the story is centered on the wealthy Lennox automotive dynasty behaving badly and accumulating power. The youngest daughter, Marjorie, uncovers a web of family secrets. The book is rooted in deep historical research, and explores themes of power, impermanence, control, and the fragility of constructed legacies in Detroit during this time period.
Ruta discusses the control exerted over women during the era, often framed as “safeguarding” but functioning as suppression of creative and personal autonomy. She notes that the cover design --- Honolulu Blue and silver --- is a nod to Detroit. She also shares that the “Dear Coco” interstitial letters throughout were part of the original manuscript and come together meaningfully at the end.
Click here to watch the interview or here to listen to the podcast. Ruta and I have a longstanding professional relationship dating back to her debut YA novel, BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY, so I was thrilled to talk to her about her latest book.
Oprah’s Book Club pick for June is LITTLE WONDER by Sophie Chen Keller, a beautiful novel of hope, perseverance and love.
Here’s what Oprah says about the book: “It is set in modern-day China, and a mother named Song travels from her rural village with her 11-year-old child to Beijing. Her son’s name is River, and he’s a musical prodigy. He’s been invited to study under a prominent piano teacher. They arrive on the busiest travel day of the year, and as they get off the train, Song loses River in the crush of the crowd. It’s every mother’s worst nightmare. What happens next will leave you astounded by the incredible encounters and the harrowing experiences that both the mother and the son have to go through.”
Oprah and Sophie recently sat down with an enthusiastic audience of readers to discuss Sophie's childhood spent both in the US and China and how that experience impacted her writing. She also shares how becoming a mother for the first time was the inspiration for LITTLE WONDER. You can watch their discussion here and access the guide here.
Mary Kay Andrews, Queen of the Summer Read, is back with her first novel in two years. Pack your bags for a summer journey shaped by family secrets, long-buried history, and charming men with Irish accents. The story in ROAD TRIP is sure to entertain you for miles.
Pamela Kramer has our review on Bookreporter and says, “Andrews writes novels about family and friendships. There also is some romance. ROAD TRIP has that trifecta in delightful shares…. There is a dog named Sinead who becomes an important part of the story. There are lambs frolicking in the Irish hills. There is beautiful weather (most of the time) and abundant fragrant gardens. There also is a bit of danger and lots of mystery. This combination results in a perfectly lovely novel that is the epitome of the summer read.” Click here for the guide and here to read the full review.
A PAIR OF ACES, Reese’s Book Club pick for June, is the third collaboration between Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray, following THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN and THE FIRST LADIES. The novel revolves around two trailblazing women on opposite sides of the law --- a prosecutor and a madam --- who team up to bring down notorious Mob boss Lucky Luciano in 1930s New York.
In her Bookreporter review, Rebecca Munro calls A PAIR OF ACES Benedict and Murray's “most gripping and shocking novel yet.” She goes on to say, “The book’s title, a smart nod to poker’s best starting hand, is apt. As Polly and Eunice prove, no matter how stacked the deck, there’s simply no beating a well-matched pair of aces. That description also applies to the dream team that is Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray.” Click here to read more of Rebecca’s thoughts on the book and here for the guide.
Feuding Windsor brothers and their wives --- some things, it seems, never change. THE WINDSOR AFFAIR, Melanie Benjamin’s latest novel, recreates the cataclysmic events that nearly toppled the monarchy and incited the power struggle between Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Wallis Simpson.
According to Pamela Kramer in her review on Bookreporter, “While neither of these women come off as particularly likable, what makes THE WINDSOR AFFAIR fascinating is the glimpse into a unique time in history and how two strong and determined females shaped it. Historical fiction fans will adore this book, and Benjamin's efforts to make it as historically accurate as possible is admirable.” Click here for the guide and here for the full review.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
DOLLY ALL THE TIME: Set in a fictional seaside town in Rhode Island, Annabel Monaghan’s latest novel is June’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. Dolly Brick is a hardworking single mom who returns to her hometown for the summer and stumbles into a fake dating situationship with a wealthy, workaholic scion.
-
VALLEY OF THE MOMS: Hannah Selinger’s debut novel is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. Told through the alternating perspectives of a husband and wife exactly one year apart, this book is a gripping look at the underpinnings of grief, the social structures of wealth, and the secrets people keep --- even among friends and loved ones.
-
ALAN OPTS OUT: Perfect for readers of Rufi Thorpe and Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Courtney Maum’s latest novel is a big-idea, laugh-out-loud satire about ambition, marriage, status, and what it means to step off the treadmill of late-stage capitalism.
-
JOURNEYING HOME: Emily Saxe Nydam’s debut novel is a sweeping, dual-timeline love story that begins in the early 1900s and unfolds across generations. It follows two strong women, Lizzy and Gwen, whose lives are separated by time yet deeply intertwined.
Melissa Albert’s first adult novel, THE CHILDREN, is June’s “Read with Jenna” Book Club pick. The estranged adult children of a legendary author must contend with the vine-like creep of legacy, memory and magic.
Jenna says, “Not since Donna Tartt’s THE SECRET HISTORY have I loved a book filled with such magic and mystery as I have Melissa Albert’s THE CHILDREN.” According to Jenna, the book asks this question: “What weight do our childhood memories hold?”

DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON by Lisa See
An Upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON by Lisa See (Historical Fiction)
In 1870, three Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty and violent pueblo of Los Angeles. Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar, is entrancing and innocent. These characteristics should bring her great rewards, beginning with her arranged marriage to a much older merchant. Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, has grown up hungry. In a moment of desperation, Petal’s father sells her to buy money for rice seed, and she is loaded onto a ship to the Gold Mountain --- America --- where she is once again sold. Moon is married to a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, but her failed footbinding as a child has left her with a limp that lessens her value in the eyes of many. Anti-Chinese sentiment is strong in Los Angeles, and this eventually leads to the Night of Horrors during which all three women are challenged in ways they could not have imagined.

Feuding Windsor brothers and their wives --- some things, it seems, never change. Melanie Benjamin's latest work of historical fiction recreates the cataclysmic events that nearly toppled the monarchy and incited the power struggle between Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Wallis Simpson. Told from the perspectives of both women, the book propels readers into the fabulous world of the debonair Prince of Wales, café society of the 1930s, and the glittering private lives of the Windsors.
