My book group rarely finds a book that we all enjoy. There is usually some spirited discussion of why it did, or did not, work for at least one of us. Well, we finally found a book that we all loved: THE CORRESPONDENT by Virginia Evans.
Some of us listened to it and enjoyed the audio experience. Others read the hardcover. It was interesting to see how it resonated with each of us. It came out in April and has been a huge “word-of-mouth” book, meaning that enthusiasm for it has been spread by people talking about it. It was not a monthly pick from a celebrity or television book group. It found its way by being a unique and clever book that has sparked conversation among readers. We talked about the characters we liked --- and how Sybil evolved as we got to know her more.
Speaking of bookish conversation, when I was at an author luncheon a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I had read HEART THE LOVER by Lily King. A couple of us quickly started a discussion, talking about how we read it in a day and what we loved about it. My book group is reading it next, and I am very interested in hearing what they think about it.
I suggested it because it is a relatively short book for the group, all of whom have young kids. Between Halloween (which becomes a whole production with “Trunk or Treat” events, the school parade and THE night of trick-or-treating), the Teacher’s Convention four-day weekend that is unique to New Jersey (so unique that Disney World all but calls it Jersey Week for the number of people who pluck their children from school for the entire week to hit the House of Mouse), and Thanksgiving, there will not be a lot of free time these next few weeks.
There is lots going on for us in November, including our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group with Clare Leslie Hall. The event will be held on Wednesday, November 19th at 2pm ET, and you can sign up here for it. Please note the afternoon timing as Clare lives in the UK. Our usual start time of 8pm ET would’ve had Clare joining us at 1am her time!
We will talk about her novel, BROKEN COUNTRY, a Reese’s Book Club pick and Bookreporter.com Bets On selection that released earlier this year and has sold over a million copies. Reese Witherspoon recently said that this was her favorite book of the year: “That one made me cry.” I am betting that many people will agree with Reese!
There will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Clare.
For the first part, those who are asking a question on camera will be featured. This includes spending time with Clare backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Clare" by noon ET on November 19th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
Then we will take questions from other members of the audience.
Last Wednesday night, Paula Hawkins joined us for October’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event to discuss her thriller, THE BLUE HOUR, a Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. Readers asked questions before and during the program, and we covered a lot of ground, including the meaning of the book’s title.
Paula shares her love of art and how much she enjoys visiting museums as she travels. THE BLUE HOUR got its start when she was on a vacation; she saw a remote island and thought about what could happen in a place like that. Paula explains how she creates her characters and their backstories. And yes, she talks about what those blue lights at the end of the novel might mean. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.

This book is a magic carpet ride through Orlean’s life and career, where every day is an opportunity for discovery and every moment holds the potential for wonder. Not only does her account of a writing life offer a trove of indispensable gleanings for writers, it’s also an essential and practical guide to embracing any creative path. Click here for the guide.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
WRECK: In this much-talked-about follow-up to SANDWICH, which is November’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick, Catherine Newman explores the hidden rules of family, the heavy weight of uncertainty, and the gnarly fact that people --- no matter how much you love them --- are not always exactly who you want them to be.
-
UNDER THE STARS: The destinies of three women converge across centuries, as a harrowing true disaster at the dawn of the steamship era evokes a complex legacy of family secrets in modern-day New England. Beatriz Williams has written a timeless epic of mothers and daughters, of love lost and found, and of the truths that echo down generations.
-
THE TEN YEAR AFFAIR: From Erin Somers, the author of STAY UP WITH HUGO BEST, comes a witty, emotionally charged exploration of marriage, family life and the roads not taken. Perfect for fans of BIG SWISS and ACTS OF SERVICE, the novel ultimately asks: Do we really want our fantasies to come true?
-
THE MISSING PAGES: Internationally bestselling author Alyson Richman has written a love story, a ghost story, and an elegy to the healing power of books. Pamela Kramer says this in her review on Bookreporter: “The narrative is engrossing. We quickly come to care for both Harry and Violet.”
Let us know by Friday, November 14th at noon ET what books you’ve read, and you’ll have a chance to win NASH FALLS by David Baldacci and QUEEN ESTHER by John Irving in our Word of Mouth contest on Bookreporter.
When Walter Nash is recruited by the FBI to help bring down a global crime network, his life is turned completely upside down in NASH FALLS. After 40 years, John Irving returns to the world of THE CIDER HOUSE RULES with the release of QUEEN ESTHER, revisiting the orphanage in St. Cloud’s, Maine, where Dr. Wilbur Larch takes in Esther --- a Viennese-born Jew whose life is shaped by anti-Semitism.

New Guide: THE BLACK WOLF by Louise Penny
THE BLACK WOLF by Louise Penny (Mystery)
Several weeks ago, Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his team uncovered and stopped a domestic terrorist attack in Montréal, arresting the person behind it. A man they called the Black Wolf. But their relief is short-lived. In a sickening turn of events, Armand has realized that plot was just the beginning. Perhaps even a deliberate misdirection. One he fell into. Something deeper and darker, more damaging, is planned. Did he in fact arrest the Black Wolf, or are they still out there? Armand is appalled to think that his mistake has allowed their conspiracy to grow, to gather supporters. To spread lies, manufacture enemies, and feed hatred and division. Still recovering from wounds received in stopping the first attack, Armand is confined to the village of Three Pines, leading a covert investigation from there.

JOYRIDE: A Memoir by Susan Orlean (Memoir)
JOYRIDE is a magic carpet ride through Susan Orlean’s life and career, where every day is an opportunity for discovery and every moment holds the potential for wonder. Throughout her storied career, Orlean’s curiosity draws her to explore the most ordinary and extraordinary of places, from going deep inside the head of a regular 10-year-old boy for a legendary profile (“The American Man Age Ten”) to reporting on a woman who owns 27 tigers, from capturing the routine magic of Saturday night to climbing Mt. Fuji. Orlean takes us through her process of dreaming up ideas, managing deadlines, connecting with sources, chasing every possible lead, confronting writer’s block and self-doubt, and crafting the perfect lede --- a Susan specialty.

HEART THE LOVER by Lily King and PLEASE DON’T LIE by Christina Baker Kline and Anne Burt
HEART THE LOVER by Lily King (Fiction)
HEART THE LOVER by Lily King is the kind of book that you can devour in a sitting. You almost have to do that as it is a truly compulsive read with a lot of heart and soul. It is written in the first person by a narrator who is not named until the very last page. Do not read that page now. Stay here with me.
The narrator starts her story in her senior year of college. Two brilliant students in her 17th-Century Lit class invite her into their world, where intellectual curiosity is keen, and they love banter and late-night card games. They nickname her Jordan, and that is how we think of her throughout the book. They are living in an off-campus house that their professor has vacated while he is on sabbatical. It’s a smart and elegant home, nothing like the single-bed cold dorm room in which Jordan is used to living.

Two years ago, Hayley Stone lost her parents in a tragic fire. Then her sister, Jenna, overdosed and died, leaving her alone but very well-off financially. Her new husband, Brandon, sees what this is doing to her. So he recommends that they get away and begin a new life together.
