Today has been designated Buy Indie Day, an idea conceived by author Joseph Finder to show support for local indie bookstores.
The need to support the small businesses we love really hit home for me when I went to shop online at one of my favorite retailers, Illuminations, and saw an announcement that they had gone out of business. As a bibliophile, I also thought about the bookstores that I love. How would I feel if they were not around? Today, readers are banding together for Buy Indie Day and are encouraged to make a purchase at an independent bookstore. Yes times are tough all around, but maybe you can treat yourself to a book or purchase one as a gift (perhaps something for mom for Mother's Day) --- or pick up your next book club read.
