Not too long ago, suspense writer C.J. Box wrote an interesting Top 10 about authors who "own" their territory. Own meaning writers who brought the people, places, smells, sights and sounds of their chosen literary landscapes to life. In other words, they put you there --- in the woods, on the street corner, toes in the sand, wherever --- even if you had never been and weren't planning on it. Naturally, Box was being humble by not including himself on the list as the Wyoming settings for his Joe Pickett novels have made him incredibly successfully, and more than worthy of a spot on his own list. Therefore, it's no surprise that his latest Joe Pickett mystery, NOWHERE TO RUN, debuts at No. 2 on the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association list.

Also debuting this week are titles by reliable bestsellers such as Anne Lamott (IMPERFECT BIRDS), Jim Butcher (CHANGES) and Elizabeth Berg (THE LAST TIME I SAW YOU). Lamott's popularity (and residency) in Northern California carried her to the top spot on the region's bestseller list, dethroning Kathryn Stockett's THE HELP. Further solidfying their status as the breakout titles of the spring, Helen Simonson's MAJOR PETTIGREW'S LAST STAND and Karl Marlantes MATTERHORN continue to hover in the top 10.

Earlier this week, Paul Harding's TINKERS was awarded the Pulitzer Prize fiction and it will be interesting to see how many lists, and how high, he charts on the lists. Much has been made of this title's "scenic" route to publication to shelf to the toast of the book world. If you haven't already, you really should read about the TINKERS journey.

And on the shameless self-promotional front, a few authors appearing on lists will be contributing to our Mother's Day Month blog series that will debut soon. But to whet your appetite, you can expect mom-centric blogs from Cathleen Schine (THE THREE WEISSMANNS OF WESTPORT), Sandra Dallas (WHITER THAN SNOW), Jennifer Chiaverini (THE ALOHA QUILT) and a few others. Stay tuned!
