With Tony Blair's memoir A JOURNEY: MY POLITICAL LIFE coming out this week I got to thinking. The book is expected to rank as the bestselling UK political memoir ever and I'm sure readers on both sides of the pond and possibly on both sides of the aisle will be reading it.
So my question is... could a book club sucessfully read a political memoir without killing each other? Could you talk about Hilary, Bill, Sarah or George and not get defensive? Or offensive?
I suppose if you knew, without a doubt, that everyone was "on the same side" you could have a happy discussion... but are there many groups where that is the case?
I imagine that even within neighborhood or alumni book groups there would be differences in political opinion. I think one of the things that most book clubs cherish is the respect everyone shows for everyone else's opinion. Would that respect still hold if you brought politics to the table?
Have you ever tried it? How did it go?
I'd love to hear your thoughts... as always, right here on the blog or via email ([email protected]).
