Fall is here, and with it wholesale changes to the IndieBound bestseller lists from California to the New York island, from the redwood forest to the gulf stream waters.
Jonathan Franzen's new "great American novel" FREEDOM tops the lists, and not surprisingly. The hype machine was working overtime on this opus of the modern American family, and got to breathe a sigh of relief when Oprah annointed it her latest pick.
Emma Donoghue's ROOM, another much-hyped novel and a Man Booker nominee, charted in the Top 5 around the country. Her haunting tale of a young boy, his mother and their room has all the makings of a word-of-mouth sensation that has only begun to build steam.
Sara Gruen's APE HOUSE, her first effort since the smash WATER FOR ELEPHANTS, also nestled into the Top 5, along with diviner of the human heart, Nicholas Sparks, and his latest, SAFE HAVEN. The Southern-based Sparks couldn't quite muster past the FREEDOM frenzy, settling for No. 2 in his homebase. Tatiana de Rosnay's first U.S. hardcover, A SECRET KEPT, also charted well, feeding off the still hot book club mainstay SARAH'S KEY.
