How do you kill someone underwater? And how do you make the best whoopee pie?
If these questions even vaguely pique your interest, then William Morrow’s Book Club Girl “Night Out” event, which took place on Wednesday, June 19th at the HarperCollins offices in New York City, would have made your night, as it did for me, a longtime reader of Bookreporter.com. The evening featured authors Joshilyn Jackson and Meg Mitchell Moore being interviewed by Carol Fitzgerald, the president and co-founder of The Book Report Network.
NEVER HAVE I EVER is Joshilyn’s 10th book and first thriller. She said that it revolves around the question: “What if your worst enemy knew your darkest secret?” That was enough for me. I’m reading this book now and not waiting to go to the beach.
According to Meg, THE ISLANDERS focuses on a famous writer hiding from a big mistake, a bakery owner with competition, and a stay-at-home mom with a secret job --- all of whom are on beautiful Block Island. Be on the lookout for a character from her previous books and one that reminds you of James Patterson. There’s nothing wrong with a good book that happens to be a beach read.
These very different authors in personality gave insightful interviews under Carol’s careful questions. The night was quick and upbeat but delved into plot arcs, character development, location as a character, research, and both the writing and editing processes. Under a less skilled interviewer, it would have been a long, plodding night. But Carol guided the authors through these topics with wit and great humor.
Oh, and as for those two questions? You’ll have to read the books to find out the answers!
