So Many Great Books; Get Ready to Make Time for Them!
Next week is BookExpo, the industry’s annual trade show where we will be doing our annual Book Group Speed Dating event on Friday afternoon, June 2nd. We have 24 publishers participating, and more than 100 fall/winter titles that are “perfect for book group reading” will be presented. Above are links to just three books by authors who you all know that are forthcoming, to give you a taste of what you can look forward to. By the time our next newsletter goes out, we will have links to all the publisher presentations on our site so you can start planning ahead.
Also, we have these two little nuggets for those of you who enjoy movies based on books. First up, here is a link to a book trailer for the film adaptation of THE GLASS CASTLE starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts, which will be in theaters on August 11th.
And just as I was writing this newsletter, we got word that the movie adaptation of THE NIGHTINGALE, the bestselling book by Kristin Hannah, will be released on August 10, 2018.
In reader mail, I have two notes to share. The first is from Nancy in South Carolina: "I belong to two book groups here. One is the one I always refer to when I enter your contests. The other is a community club, with around 40 members. We usually get 20 or so at a meeting. Our organizer came up with an idea last year for July, our quiet month, when a lot of members are traveling. It was so successful, we're going to do it again this year. Each member takes a book she has read and enjoyed or found worthy of discussion, wraps it in brown paper, and writes one or two sentences about the plot, or to whom it might appeal, or something to pique someone's interest. We don't give the book's title or our name on the outside. Each participant then exchanges her book for one she finds appealing. On the inside, you give your contact info, so that, after the book's been read, the two of you can discuss it. It's a fun way to try new authors or genres.” What a terrific idea!
Michelle wrote, “My club received its copies of PACHINKO that we won in a contest. Thank you so much for the books. It was wonderful, and I loved sharing with friends.
By the way, we are always open to ideas of what you would like to see from us on ReadingGroupGuides.com and in this newsletter. We're noodling some new ideas, but if you have something that you would like to see here, drop me a line with the subject line “Ideas for RGG.”
We have two new featured guides to tell you about in this update. First up is SAME BEACH, NEXT YEAR, in which Dorothea Benton Frank returns to her magical Lowcountry of South Carolina. A chance meeting on the Isle of Palms brings former sweethearts Adam Stanley and Eve Landers together again. As they do some major catching up, their respective spouses, Eliza and Carl, strike up a deep friendship of their own. Year after year, all four look forward to their reunion at Wild Dunes, a condominium complex, where they grow closer with each passing day. The devotion and love they share will help them overcome life’s many obstacles as they approach their twilight years. Click here for the discussion guide and here for our review on Bookreporter.com.
Our second featured guide is for MISSISSIPPI BLOOD. This is the concluding volume in Greg Iles' Natchez Burning trilogy, which is quite the achievement considering that Iles nearly lost his life six years ago in a car accident that left him in a medically induced coma for eight days. He had just completed NATCHEZ BURNING, but his near-death experience coupled with the subsequent passing of his father inspired him to delve more deeply into his characters and the brutal history of the American South, thus turning what was intended to be one book into an epic trilogy. In this final installment, Penn Cage finds himself defending his father, Dr. Tom Cage, who stands accused of murdering his former lover, an African-American woman. Frustratingly, though, Tom would prefer to plead guilty than reveal the truth of the crime to his son. Penn feels that he must exonerate his father in order to prevent his entire family from being destroyed. Check out the discussion guide here, and click here for our review on Bookreporter.com. My husband devoured this series --- and loved it!
You still have plenty of time to submit your entries in this month’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading” contest, where three book groups will win 12 copies of the paperback edition of HOMEGOING, Yaa Gyasi’s award-winning debut novel and the Indies Choice Debut Book of the Year. The book follows the parallel paths of two half sisters and their descendants through eight generations --- from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Thursday, June 8th at noon ET. See the discussion guide here and our Bookreporter.com review here.
We love reading through the titles that you are discussing with your book group. Seeing what resonates with you helps us with programming the site, so be sure to share!
Earlier this year, some lucky book groups won copies of BEING MORTAL: Medicine and What Matters in the End and answered some questions about it. In this runaway bestseller from 2014, Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, tackles the toughest challenge of his profession: how medicine can improve not only life but also the process of its ending. If you haven’t had a chance to read our groups’ comments, which we shared with you in the last newsletter, please take a moment and do so now. Those who have read BEING MORTAL have called it a life-changer, and we are so glad that these groups were able to experience this book and discuss it. I strongly suggest you do the same with your group.
This month’s poll asks: How do you participate in your book group meetings? Do you usually dominate the discussion, sit back and listen to what others in your group have to say, or does it depend on such factors as your mood that day or how much you liked or disliked the book that’s being discussed? Let us know by Thursday, June 8th at noon ET.
Later in this newsletter, you’ll find details about a number of contests that are currently running on Bookreporter.com, including ones for Father’s Day, Summer Reading, Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio. Enter for your chance to win some fabulous hardcovers, paperbacks and audiobooks in a variety of genres!
Here’s wishing you a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. We will be back with another newsletter in two weeks. Enjoy your book group discussion!

Featured Guide: MISSISSIPPI BLOOD by Greg Iles
MISSISSIPPI BLOOD by Greg Iles (Thriller)
The endgame is at hand for Penn Cage his family, and the enemies bent on destroying them in this revelatory volume in the epic trilogy set in modern-day Natchez, Mississippi --- Greg Iles’ epic tale of love and honor, hatred and revenge that explores how the sins of the past continue to haunt the present.
Shattered by grief and dreaming of vengeance, Penn Cage sees his family and his world collapsing around him. The woman he loves is gone, his principles have been irrevocably compromised and his father, once a paragon of the community that Penn leads as mayor, is about to be tried for the murder of a former lover. Most terrifying of all, Dr. Cage seems bent on self-destruction. Despite Penn's experience as a prosecutor in major murder trials, his father has frozen him out of the trial preparations --- preferring to risk dying in prison to revealing the truth of the crime to his son.
Tom Cage's murder trial sets a terrible clock in motion, and unless Penn can pierce the veil of the past and exonerate his father, his family will be destroyed. Unable to trust anyone around him --- not even his own mother --- Penn joins forces with Serenity Butler, a famous young black author who has come to Natchez to write about his father's case. Together, Penn and Serenity --- a former soldier --- battle to crack the Double Eagles and discover the secret history of the Cage family and the South itself, a desperate move that risks the only thing they have left to gamble: their lives.
MISSISSIPPI BLOOD is the enthralling conclusion to a breathtaking trilogy seven years in the making --- one that has kept readers on the edge of their seats. With piercing insight, narrative prowess, and a masterful ability to blend history and imagination, New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles illuminates the brutal history of the American South in a highly atmospheric and suspenseful novel that delivers the shocking resolution his fans have eagerly awaited.

HOMEGOING by Yaa Gyasi (Historical Fiction)
Ghana, 18th century: Two half sisters, Effia and Esi, are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the notorious Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and shipped off to America to be sold into slavery.
With breathtaking scope, HOMEGOING follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations: from the slave traders of the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the Asantes’ struggle against British colonialism to the first stirrings of the American Civil War, from the jazz of 20th-century Harlem to the sparkling shores of modern Ghana. Yaa Gyasi’s extraordinary novel illuminates slavery’s troubled legacy both for those who were taken and those who stayed --- and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation.

To Ginny, a child with autism, the word Forever means until the police come.
Five years ago the police forcibly removed her from the home of her abusive birth mother, Gloria. Now 14, and in her fourth Forever Home, Ginny remains hell-bent on finding her way back to Gloria’s apartment. She has no illusions about her mother’s addictions or lack of parenting skills. She knows that it might be dangerous --- that it might even kill her. Still she plots, obsessed with returning to Gloria’s to find something she insists she left behind, something she hid under her bed. After her Forever Mother gets pregnant, Ginny’s already-fragile relationship with her disintegrates, and her Forever Parents begin the process of placing Ginny at St. Genevieve’s Home for Girls, effectively un-adopting her.
But Ginny has other plans. She’ll steal and lie, and reach across her past to exploit the good intentions of her aunt and her birth father --- anything it takes to get back what’s missing in her life. Book Group Comments on
BEING MORTAL by Atul Gawande
In February, a selection of book groups won copies of the runaway bestseller BEING MORTAL: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande and were asked to answer some questions about the book. We are happy to be sharing their wonderful feedback with you here. Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Those who have read BEING MORTAL have called it a life-changer, and we are so glad that these groups were able to experience this book and discuss it.
BEING MORTAL: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande (Health/Medicine)
In BEING MORTAL, bestselling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending.
Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit. Nursing homes, preoccupied with safety, pin patients into railed beds and wheelchairs. Hospitals isolate the dying, checking for vital signs long after the goals of cure have become moot. Doctors, committed to extending life, continue to carry out devastating procedures that in the end extend suffering.
Gawande, a practicing surgeon, addresses his profession's ultimate limitation, arguing that quality of life is the desired goal for patients and families. Gawande offers examples of freer, more socially fulfilling models for assisting the infirm and dependent elderly, and he explores the varieties of hospice care to demonstrate that a person's last weeks or months may be rich and dignified.
Full of eye-opening research and riveting storytelling, BEING MORTAL asserts that medicine can comfort and enhance our experience even to the end, providing not only a good life but also a good end.
