While it used to be a fact that book groups did not meet during the summer, we are hearing from more and more readers that summer does not affect their meeting plans. We also hear from others who, like my mom, join a book group where they vacation over the summer. Many resort communities schedule author events to bring readers together, knowing that they have a captive audience on vacation. When I was at the Avalon Free Public Library two weeks ago, I kicked off their Summer Reading Series where they will be bringing in authors on Wednesday evenings, including Daniel Silva and Meg Donohue. Above is a photo of me at that event, with Erin Brown from their staff (on the left) and some local avid readers, who are all Bookreporter.com and ReadingGroupGuides.com readers.
I am planning to attend an event at the Brielle Public Library in Brielle, New Jersey, on August 3rd at 6:30, where Patti Callahan Henry will be talking about THE BOOKSHOP AT WATER’S END. (For those of you looking for a book set in a beach location that brings up special memories of a place well-loved --- and a story in which a bookstore is a special part of the story line --- this is a book for you.) And Patti has a great book club kit on her website that you can access here, complete with a back story on why she wrote the book, as well as discussion questions. Oh, and in Brielle they too have a full lineup of authors, including an upcoming one with Dorothea Benton Frank; Jane Green, Pam Jenoff and Mary Alice Monroe already did events there.
Local booksellers are known to schedule authors to bring in the local tourist trade, as well as locals. It's always worth it to check their listings when you are headed to a town. What a great way to enjoy book and authors while on vacation.
Books about books are always of interest to our readers, so I am drawing your attention to CAMINO ISLAND by John Grisham, which I spent a lovely afternoon reading last Sunday. Many of you know Grisham for his legal thrillers, but this is set in a bookstore in a resort area, and it has to do with a heist of original F. Scott Fitzgerald manuscripts from Princeton University. What happened to them? What’s the market like for rare books and manuscripts? It will have you thinking about the first editions that you may have in your own book collections --- and what it takes to make them worth more than the average book!
Now to our update...
This month’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading?” contest book is Kate Quinn’s latest historical novel, THE ALICE NETWORK, which actress Reese Witherspoon has chosen as the next selection of her book club. I am looking forward to reading this one! In the aftermath of World War II, Charlie St. Clair is pregnant and unmarried. When her parents banish her to Europe so she can terminate her pregnancy, Charlie instead heads to London to find out what happened to her cousin Rose, who disappeared in Nazi-occupied France during the war. A year into World War I, Eve Gardiner is recruited to work as a spy. Sent into enemy-occupied France, she is trained by Lili, who manages a vast network of secret agents. Thirty years later, Eve is still haunted by the betrayal that ultimately tore apart the Alice Network. But then a young American barges into her crumbling London house and utters a name she hasn't heard in decades, launching them both on a mission to find the truth, no matter where it leads. Three groups will have the chance to win 12 copies of the book. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, August 9th at noon ET.
In June's “What’s Your Book Group Reading?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW by Amor Towles, A MAN CALLED OVE by Fredrik Backman, THE NIGHTINGALE by Kristin Hannah, COMMONWEALTH by Ann Patchett, and ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE by Anthony Doerr. Curious about the titles that just missed being in the top five? Scroll further down the newsletter to see those!
We have four new featured guides to tell you about this month. First up is KISS CARLO by Adriana Trigiani, the story of an Italian-American family on the cusp of change. It’s 1949, and The Palazzini Cab Company & Western Union Telegraph Office, owned and operated by Dominic Palazzini and his three sons, is flourishing. But a decades-long feud that split Dominic and his brother, Mike, and their once-close families sets the stage for a re-match. To make matters even more complicated, the arrival of an urgent telegram from Italy upends the life of the orphaned Nicky Castone, who lives and works with his Uncle Dom and his family. At the age of 30, Nicky decides he wants more. Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter.com.
Next up is COCOA BEACH, Beatriz Williams’ new historical novel that takes her readers back to sunny Florida and Prohibition-era Cocoa Beach. Here, we are introduced to Virginia Fortescue, who flees her oppressive home in New York City for the battlefields of World War I France. She proceeds to fall in love with Captain Simon Fitzwilliam, but the dark secrets of his past will damage their eventual marriage. Five years later, Virginia, who is now a widow, arrives in Cocoa Beach, Florida, to settle her husband’s estate. However, she is not convinced that Simon died in the fire that destroyed the seaside home he built for her and their daughter, and is determined to uncover the truth, for the sake of the daughter Simon never met. You can check out the guide here and our review on Bookreporter.com here.
Our third featured guide is for THE CHILD by Fiona Barton, whose debut novel, THE WIDOW, was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection when it released in hardcover. During the demolition of an old house in London, a workman discovers a tiny skeleton that has been buried for years. As journalist Kate Waters investigates this baffling case, she uncovers links to a crime that rocked the city decades earlier: A newborn baby was stolen from a maternity ward and was never found. But there is much more to the story, and Kate zeroes in on the pasts of the people who once lived in this neighborhood. This electrifying psychological thriller is also a Bets On pick; see my commentary here, along with the guide and our Bookreporter.com review.
Finally, we’re featuring the guide for EVERY LAST LIE by Mary Kubica, whose previous novels of psychological suspense are THE GOOD GIRL, PRETTY BABY and DON’T YOU CRY. Clara Solberg’s life changes forever when her husband, Nick, is killed in a car crash. Miraculously, though, their four-year-old daughter, Maisie, a passenger in the vehicle, isn’t hurt at all. Although the crash is ruled an accident, Clara begins to question what really happened that afternoon and becomes convinced that something much more sinister is at play here. Who would have wanted Nick dead, and why? This chilling thriller is told in the alternating perspectives of Clara's investigation and Nick's last months leading up to the crash. When you read a book that you think would be perfect for your book group’s discussion, what do you do? That’s our latest poll question; click here to let us know. You can either select one or more of the options we’ve provided, or submit an answer of your own.
Our previous poll asked in what year was the book that you most recently read with your book group published. For 28% of you, your most recent book group read released before 2012. 26% of you read a book that released in 2016, while 22% read a book that published this year. Click here for the full results.
We’ve updated our New in Paperback and Reading Roundup features for July, where you’ll find plenty of titles to keep you busy through the rest of the summer. On Bookreporter.com, our 24-hour Summer Reading giveaways are still going strong, and as always, our Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio contests are featuring some fabulous hardcovers and audiobooks as prizes.
Last week, I received a lovely note from Suzanne, whose book group was one of the winners of our contest for PACHINKO by Min Jin Lee from earlier this year. Suzanne said the novel was “very well written, and copious research was evident…. I certainly learned interesting facts that were often depressing yet so important to the story. Even so, the love the characters had for one another was uplifting.” One of her fellow members had this to say: “The descriptions of the characters and their daily lives were very enlightening. I felt empathy for the characters struggling to make the best of their lives, while being unable to escape poverty. Early in the book, the women had few options. It was good to see them be resourceful by starting their own business and having some success.”
We love hearing what you have to say about the books you have won!
We’re moving offices (after 21 years), so things are a bit hectic (to say the least). I’ve already moved my Bets On selections and other favorite books to the new space, which luckily is just a few blocks away. We'll be back to you with another update in a couple of weeks once we settle in!

Featured Guide: KISS CARLO by Adriana Trigiani
KISS CARLO by Adriana Trigiani (Historical Fiction)
It’s 1949, and South Philadelphia bursts with opportunity during the post-war boom. The Palazzini Cab Company & Western Union Telegraph Office, owned and operated by Dominic Palazzini and his three sons, is flourishing: business is good, they’re surrounded by sympathetic wives and daughters-in-law, with grandchildren on the way. But a decades-long feud that split Dominic and his brother Mike and their once-close families sets the stage for a re-match.
Amidst the hoopla, the arrival of an urgent telegram from Italy upends the life of Nicky Castone (Dominic and his wife’s orphaned nephew) who lives and works with his Uncle Dom and his family. Nicky decides, at 30, that he wants more --- more than just a job driving Car #4 and more than his longtime fiancée Peachy DePino, a bookkeeper, can offer. When he admits to his fiancée that he’s been secretly moonlighting at the local Shakespeare theater company, Nicky finds himself drawn to the stage, its colorful players and to the determined Calla Borelli, who inherited the enterprise from her father, Nicky must choose between the conventional life his family expects of him or chart a new course and risk losing everything he cherishes.
From the dreamy mountaintop village of Roseto Valfortore in Italy, to the vibrant streets of South Philly, to the close-knit enclave of Roseto, Pennsylvania, to New York City during the birth of the golden age of television, KISS CARLO is a powerful, inter-generational story that celebrates the ties that bind, while staying true to oneself when all hope seems lost.

Featured Guide: NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE US
by Stephanie Powell Watts
Sarah Jessica Parker's First ALA Book Club Central Pick
NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE US by Stephanie Powell Watts (Fiction)
JJ Ferguson has returned home to Pinewood, North Carolina, to build his dream house and to pursue his high school sweetheart, Ava. But as he reenters his former world, where factories are in decline and the legacy of Jim Crow is still felt, he’s startled to find that the people he once knew and loved have changed just as much as he has. Ava is now married and desperate for a baby, though she can’t seem to carry one to term. Her husband, Henry, has grown distant, frustrated by the demise of the furniture industry, which has outsourced to China and stripped the area of jobs. Ava’s mother, Sylvia, caters to and meddles with the lives of those around her, trying to fill the void left by her absent son. And Don, Sylvia’s unworthy but charming husband, just won’t stop hanging around.
JJ’s return --- and his plans to build a huge mansion overlooking Pinewood and woo Ava --- not only unsettles their family, but stirs up the entire town. The ostentatious wealth that JJ has attained forces everyone to consider the cards they’ve been dealt, what more they want and deserve, and how they might go about getting it. Can they reorient their lives to align with their wishes rather than their current realities? Or are they all already resigned to the rhythms of the particular lives they lead?
NO ONE IS COMING TO SAVE US is a revelatory debut from an insightful voice; with echoes of THE GREAT GATSBY, it is an arresting and powerful novel about an extended African American family and their colliding visions of the American Dream. In evocative prose, Stephanie Powell Watts has crafted a full and stunning portrait that combines a universally resonant story with an intimate glimpse into the hearts of one family.
