For My 30 Minutes of Pleasure Reading...
Summertime means schedules often get tossed up in the air as people head on vacation, work different hours, and in many parts of the country spend time at leisure activities not available at other times during the year. We also layered in an office move --- our first in 21(!) years, which brought with it a ton of details (phones, copier, mail) that required my attention. Whew! So glad that is behind us.
Though the days were long, I still read each morning and evening, but not as much as I would have liked. Remember when you were a child, they would say, “As part of your homework, read for pleasure for 30 minutes.” I felt like I was on that schedule, but was always bargaining with myself for “five more minutes.” I was wishing that DEAR (“Drop Everything and Read”) was part of the adult lexicon.
Mary from Lincoln, Nebraska, wrote this about the copies of LILAC GIRLS by Martha Hall Kelly that she won with her book group: “Our Trinity Book Club discussed the book LILAC GIRLS this afternoon. We all enjoyed it. There was a great deal of discussion about Caroline Ferriday and her relationship with Paul. None of us enjoyed reading about the experiments on 'The Rabbits,' but understood that is what happens under those conditions. We appreciated Caroline's efforts to help the girls and bring them to the U.S., plus arrange for medical care on their legs as well as dental help. Another person who received lots of discussion was Herta and the circumstances that led to her actions. We look forward to reading Martha's upcoming book, GIN LANE, about Caroline's mother Eliza's fight to help Russian refugees displaced by the revolution there during WWI. We really appreciated winning the 12 LILAC GIRLS books.” We, too, look forward to seeing what Martha writes next!
The movie adaptation of THE GLASS CASTLE is scheduled to hit theaters on August 11th. Book clubs continue to read it; it’s typically a perennial favorite. I came across a terrific interview with Jeannette Walls from "CBS Sunday Morning" where she talks about the story --- and viewers also can see her with her mom today as part of this piece. You can see it here.
We have two new featured guides to tell you about in this newsletter. First up is THE LYING GAME, Ruth Ware’s third psychological thriller following IN A DARK, DARK WOOD and THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10. Three women in and around London receive a text they had been dreading for years --- “I need you” --- from Kate, the fourth member of their formerly inseparable clique. The four girls were best friends at their boarding school and were infamous for playing the Lying Game, telling lies to both students and faculty. But as a result of their little game, they were all expelled in their final year of school under mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the school’s art teacher (who also happens to be Kate’s father). See the guide, along with our review and a Q&A on Bookreporter.com, and don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the August 4th Bookreporter.com Weekly Update newsletter.
Our second featured guide is for THE BOOKSHOP AT WATER’S END, another standout beach read from Patti Callahan Henry. Bonny Blankenship and her best friend, Lainey McKay, has fond memories of their idyllic summers in Watersend, South Carolina, and spending time at the local bookshop. But when Lainey’s mother disappeared, everything changed. Now in her early 50s, Bonny wants desperately to escape after a tragic mistake puts her career as an emergency room doctor in serious jeopardy. So, accompanied by her troubled teenage daughter, she returns to the beloved river house, where she is soon joined by Lainey and her two young children. They reunite with bookshop owner Mimi, and for all three of these strong women, buried secrets and long-ago loves return like the tide. Click here for the guide and here for our Bookreporter.com review.
By the way, on Thursday night (August 3rd) at 6:30, I will be at the Brielle Public Library in Brielle, New Jersey, where Patti will be discussing the book and doing a Q&A/signing. Hope to see some of you there!
We’ve also added the guide for THE UNQUIET DAUGHTER by Danielle Flood, a journalist who seeks the truth behind her parents’ tangled affair that inspired Graham Greene’s THE QUIET AMERICAN after a youth of privilege, estrangement and cruelty. As she yearns for her father’s love and presence, Danielle’s mother leaves her in burlesque house dressing rooms in the American Midwest, in convent schools in Long Island and Dublin, and with strangers in New York City --- all the while lying to Danielle about their past. You can check out the guide for this powerful, moving and honest memoir here.

On a cool June morning, a woman is walking her dog in the idyllic coastal village of Salten along a tidal estuary known as the Reach. Before she can stop him, the dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick, but to her horror, turns out to be something much more sinister...
The next morning, three women in and around London --- Fatima, Thea and Isabel ---receive the text they had always hoped would NEVER come, from the fourth in their formerly inseparable clique, Kate, that says only, “I need you.”
The four girls were best friends at Salten, a second-rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel. Each different in their own way, the four became inseparable and were notorious for playing the Lying Game, telling lies at every turn to both fellow boarders and faculty, with varying states of serious and flippant nature that were disturbing enough to ensure that everyone steered clear of them. The myriad and complicated rules of the game are strict: no lying to each other --- ever. Bail on the lie when it becomes clear it is about to be found out. But their little game had consequences, and the girls were all expelled in their final year of school under mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the school’s eccentric art teacher, Ambrose (who also happens to be Kate’s father).

It’s 1949, and South Philadelphia bursts with opportunity during the post-war boom. The Palazzini Cab Company & Western Union Telegraph Office, owned and operated by Dominic Palazzini and his three sons, is flourishing: business is good, they’re surrounded by sympathetic wives and daughters-in-law, with grandchildren on the way. But a decades-long feud that split Dominic and his brother Mike and their once-close families sets the stage for a re-match.
Amidst the hoopla, the arrival of an urgent telegram from Italy upends the life of Nicky Castone (Dominic and his wife’s orphaned nephew) who lives and works with his Uncle Dom and his family. Nicky decides, at 30, that he wants more --- more than just a job driving Car #4 and more than his longtime fiancée Peachy DePino, a bookkeeper, can offer. When he admits to his fiancée that he’s been secretly moonlighting at the local Shakespeare theater company, Nicky finds himself drawn to the stage, its colorful players and to the determined Calla Borelli, who inherited the enterprise from her father, Nicky must choose between the conventional life his family expects of him or chart a new course and risk losing everything he cherishes.
From the dreamy mountaintop village of Roseto Valfortore in Italy, to the vibrant streets of South Philly, to the close-knit enclave of Roseto, Pennsylvania, to New York City during the birth of the golden age of television, KISS CARLO is a powerful, inter-generational story that celebrates the ties that bind, while staying true to oneself when all hope seems lost.

EVERY LAST LIE by Mary Kubica (Psychological Thriller)
Clara Solberg's world shatters when her husband and their four-year-old daughter are in a car crash, killing Nick while Maisie is remarkably unharmed. The crash is ruled an accident…until the coming days, when Maisie starts having night terrors that make Clara question what really happened on that fateful afternoon.

Told in the alternating perspectives of Clara's investigation and Nick's last months leading up to the crash, master of suspense Mary Kubica weaves her most chilling thriller to date --- one that explores the dark recesses of a mind plagued by grief and shows that some secrets might be better left buried.

THE BREAKDOWN by B.A. Paris
THE BREAKDOWN by B.A. Paris (Psychological Thriller)
“Don’t” is a powerful word. For Cass Anderson, “don’t” is what her husband, Matthew, says about her taking a shortcut on a road through the woods on a rainy, stormy night. But alas, Cass makes the turn anyway. She passes a car with a woman sitting inside, but keeping in mind her husband’s words about the dangers of being out there in the rain, she hesitates to stop to help.
The following morning, Cass learns that a woman named Jane Walters was killed in those woods, and she was sitting in that car. She is torn up by what happened. Did her not stopping cause this murder? At the same time, Cass finds her memory slipping. Her mother died of Alzheimer’s at a young age, and she fears this may be her fate as well. Cass is safe, but there is a keen sense that someone is watching her, and it's unraveling her. What’s going on?
While there is lots of repetition before the reveal, I was engaged and read THE BREAKDOWN in less than a day. For those who shied away from the violence in B.A. Paris’ debut, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, note that THE BREAKDOWN spares readers from physical violence, though there is lots of mind-bending drama.

Bookreporter.com Bets On:
The Hamptons Murder Mystery Series by Carrie Doyle
The Hamptons Murder Mystery Series by Carrie Doyle (Mystery)
There’s something fun about discovering a series that you love and just binging your way through it. That is exactly what I did with Carrie Doyle’s Hamptons Murder Mystery series. The books are fun reading with a great cast of characters that includes her protagonist, Antonia Bingham, who is both an innkeeper and a chef. Her storylines weave in great background on the history of the Hamptons, as well as some mouth-watering food descriptions. Carrie worked for Ina Garten when she owned and ran The Barefoot Contessa in the Hamptons, so she writes about food with great authority. She also has been a summer and weekend resident of East Hampton for decades, so she knows the lay of the land. Armchair vacation travel with a mystery; I love it.
I started with the first book, DEATH ON WINDMILL WAY, though they clearly can be read in any order as Carrie writes a very strong backstory. Here Antonia has just bought the inn and has learned that there is a history of killing the past proprietors, which puts her on edge as she does not want to become the next victim. On the case with her is Joseph Fowler, a 60-something widower who is another amateur sleuth. Since Antonia is new to innkeeping, we get a birds’-eye view of just what’s entailed in an operation like this. Lots of great details on decorating and mouth-watering dining are part of the story as well.
In DEATH ON LILY POND LANE, it is spring in the Hamptons. Antonia is now working a side business as an estate manager to earn some extra money in the low season, as well as running the inn. This gives her access to some stunning homes and wealthy homeowners. I love design and architecture details as well as mysteries --- house porn as I call it --- and here you will be inspired to redecorate, or at least rearrange, as you read. Oh, for the mystery, Antonia finds a dead body at one of the homes and is then on the case of solving the murder. It’s brisk and fun. Yes, murder and mystery is fun!
DEATH ON WEST END ROAD is set during the summer months when the town is buzzing in high season. Antonia here takes on a cold case, one where Susie Whitaker was brutally murdered in 1990 on a tennis court in the poshest part of town. Who’s hired Antonia? The prime suspect, a wealthy heiress, who is part of a powerful family. The stress has Antonia cooking and baking. The latter inspired me to bake savory muffins --- something I had not thought about making before. I used Jiffy Cornbread Mix and added fresh corn, jalapenos, cheese, Indian spice-infused honey and sage.
I dare you to just read one. The nicest part is you don’t have to. You can line them up and binge read --- and enjoy! Upon finishing them, I wrote Carrie to ask when the next will be published. Stay tuned for more on that!
