August, Slow Thyself Down!
August is one of those months that I wish would just slooooow down. Seriously. While many around the country are back in the school routine, we still are clinging to lazy days in the northeast. On our sites we can see the shift back to “schedules” and “routines” by early August. July is the only month of the year where there are no schools in session, giving it a very light feeling. By August, no matter how old you are, those back-to-school vibes are building. In the back of my head, I can hear the school buses revving up.
I heard from a few readers who have seen the movie adaptation of THE GLASS CASTLE. Woody Harrelson’s performance is getting great marks. If you have seen it, shoot me a note and let me know what you think. An air-conditioned movie theater could be the perfect location for an outing for your book group.
Here’s our latest update…
Fiona Davis’ debut novel, THE DOLLHOUSE, looked at the history of New York City's glamorous Barbizon Hotel for Women from the perspective of characters from two different time periods. She does the same with her latest novel, THE ADDRESS, which is this month’s “What Your Book Group Reading?” contest book. Here, the setting shifts to The Dakota, the iconic luxury apartment building in New York City. One hundred years apart, in 1884 and 1985, Sara Smythe and Bailey Camden are both tempted by and struggle against the excess of their respective ages, and take refuge and solace in The Dakota. But what Bailey discovers in its basement could turn everything she thought she knew about her grandfather, famed architect Theodore Camden --- and the woman who killed him --- on its head. The Dakota is one of my favorite New York City buildings; when it was built on 72nd Street, it was in a rural part of the city. I know, imagine that!
Three groups will have the chance to win 12 copies of THE ADDRESS. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Tuesday, September 12th at noon ET. Be sure to check out the discussion guide, our review on Bookreporter.com, an author Q&A and my Bookreporter.com Bets On commentary. By the way, if you have not read THE DOLLHOUSE, you may want to read that as well. It would be fun for a group to explore both books and talk about Fiona’s style!
In July’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: HILLBILLY ELEGY: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance, SMALL GREAT THINGS by Jodi Picoult, LILAC GIRLS by Martha Hall Kelly, A MAN CALLED OVE by Fredrik Backman, and THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 by Ruth Ware. Later in this newsletter, you can see the Top 15, which includes a book I am just crazy about and have talked about a lot in previous newsletters: BENEATH A SCARLET SKY by Mark Sullivan, which is in the number 7 slot.
One of our readers, Mary Beth, wrote to share her enthusiasm for Mark’s book and THE ALICE NETWORK by Kate Quinn, which was last month’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading?” contest book: “I just finished THE ALICE NETWORK. It is fabulous. Thank you for mentioning it. I had read BENEATH A SCARLET SKY and told my friends about it. Now they are enjoying it. But I can't wait to tell them about THE ALICE NETWORK. I could not put it down. And when I had to put it down, I couldn't stop thinking about it. And to think these stories are true (mostly)!” We love it when our readers react this way to a book!
With this in mind, please answer our poll question: When you read a book that you think would be perfect for your book group’s discussion, what do you do? You can either select one or more of the options we’ve provided, or submit an answer of your own. We’ll share the results of the poll in our first September newsletter. We already know what Mary Beth does!
And as I was writing this newsletter, we got news that BENEATH A SCARLET SKY is being made into a movie starring Tom Holland. It's fun to get news like that. Also, I think I may have failed to share that the movie adaptation of THE NIGHTINGALE is slated to be released in August of next year. There are lots of good things happening with books we love.
We also heard from Karen, whose group won copies of ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE for her Stewart Manor Homemakers Book Club: “Wow! Thank you so much! This is wonderful. We will definitely post our thoughts about the book as soon as we can. We really appreciate this opportunity! Thanks again.”
We have four new featured guides to tell you about this month. First up is MRS. FLETCHER, a new novel from Tom Perrotta, who has written such bestsellers as THE LEFTOVERS and LITTLE CHILDREN. Eve Fletcher is a 46-year-old divorcee who one night receives a text message from an anonymous number that says, “U R my MILF!” Months pass, and Eve still can’t stop thinking about that mysterious message. She becomes a frequent visitor of the website MILFateria.com, which features the erotic exploits of ordinary, middle-aged women like herself. Meanwhile, Eve’s son Brendan, who has just started his freshman year in college, learns that his new campus isn’t nearly as welcoming to his hard-partying lifestyle as he had anticipated. Both Eve and Brendan will find themselves involved in morally fraught situations that come to a head one fateful night in November. Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter.com.
Next up is THE LAST TUDOR, the latest installment in Philippa Gregory’s Plantagenet and Tudor series of novels. Seventeen-year-old Jane Grey was queen of England for nine days. Her father and his allies crowned her instead of the dead king’s half-sister Mary Tudor, who quickly mustered an army, claimed her throne, and locked Jane in the Tower of London. When Jane refused to betray her Protestant faith, Mary sent her to the executioner’s block, where Jane transformed her father’s greedy power-grab into tragic martyrdom. Meanwhile, Jane’s sister, Katherine, faces imprisonment in the Tower when her pregnancy betrays her secret marriage. What will happen when the youngest Grey sister, Mary --- the last Tudor --- defies her ruthless and unforgiving cousin Queen Elizabeth? Be sure to check out the guide, our review on Bookreporter.com, and a Q&A with Philippa.
Our third featured guide is for WATCH ME DISAPPEAR, Janelle Brown’s third family drama following ALL WE EVER WANTED WAS EVERYTHING and THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE. It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her husband and teenage daughter have been coping with Billie’s death the best they can: Jonathan drinks as he works on a loving memoir about his marriage; Olive grows remote, from both her father and her friends at the all-girls school she attends. But then Olive starts having strange visions of her mother, still alive. Jonathan worries about Olive’s emotional stability, until he starts unearthing secrets from Billie’s past that bring into question everything he thought he understood about his wife. Together, Olive and Jonathan embark on a quest for the truth. Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter.com.
Finally, we’re featuring the guide for THE MARRIAGE PACT by Michelle Richmond, which poses the intriguing question: How far is too far when it comes to protecting your marriage? Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple, and their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice’s prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as The Pact. The goal of The Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. But the young lovers will soon discover that for adherents to The Pact, membership is for life. And The Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. This gripping psychological thriller is a Bets On pick; see my commentary here, along with the guide, our Bookreporter.com review and our interview with the author.

From all entries, three winners will be selected, and each will win 12 copies of that month’s prize book for their group. Note: To be eligible to win, let us know the title of the book that YOUR book group is CURRENTLY reading, NOT the title we are giving away.
This month's prize book is THE ADDRESS by Fiona Davis, a compelling novel about the thin lines between love and loss, success and ruin, passion and madness, all hidden behind the walls of The Dakota --- New York City’s most famous residence. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Tuesday, September 12th at noon ET.
THE ADDRESS by Fiona Davis (Historical Fiction)
After a failed apprenticeship, working her way up to head housekeeper of a posh London hotel is more than Sara Smythe ever thought she’d make of herself. But when a chance encounter with Theodore Camden, one of the architects of the grand New York apartment house The Dakota, leads to a job offer, her world is suddenly awash in possibility --- no mean feat for a servant in 1884. The opportunity to move to America, where a person can rise above one’s station. The opportunity to be the female manager of The Dakota, which promises to be the greatest apartment house in the world. And the opportunity to see more of Theo, who understands Sara like no one else...and is living in The Dakota with his wife and three young children.
In 1985, Bailey Camden is desperate for new opportunities. Fresh out of rehab, the former party girl and interior designer is homeless, jobless and penniless. Two generations ago, Bailey’s grandfather was the ward of famed architect Theodore Camden. But the absence of a genetic connection means Bailey won’t see a dime of the Camden family’s substantial estate. Instead, her “cousin” Melinda --- Camden’s biological great-granddaughter --- will inherit almost everything. So when Melinda offers to let Bailey oversee the renovation of her lavish Dakota apartment, Bailey jumps at the chance, despite her dislike of Melinda’s vision. The renovation will take away all the character and history of the apartment Theodore Camden himself lived in...and died in, after suffering multiple stab wounds by a madwoman named Sara Smythe, a former Dakota employee who had previously spent seven months in an insane asylum on Blackwell’s Island.
One hundred years apart, Sara and Bailey are both tempted by and struggle against the golden excess of their respective ages --- for Sara, the opulence of a world ruled by the Astors and Vanderbilts; for Bailey, the free-flowing drinks and cocaine in the nightclubs of New York City --- and take refuge and solace in the Upper West Side’s gilded fortress. But a building with a history as rich --- and often tragic --- as The Dakota’s can’t hold its secrets forever, and what Bailey discovers in its basement could turn everything she thought she knew about Theodore Camden --- and the woman who killed him --- on its head.

Before long, Eve’s online fixations begin to spill over into real life, revealing new romantic possibilities that threaten to upend her quiet suburban existence.

WATCH ME DISAPPEAR by Janelle Brown (Mystery/Thriller)
It’s been a year since Billie Flanagan --- a Berkeley mom with an enviable life --- went on a solo hike in Desolation Wilderness and vanished from the trail. Her body was never found, just a shattered cell phone and a solitary hiking boot.
Janelle Brown’s insights into the dynamics of intimate relationships will make you question the stories you tell yourself about the people you love, while her nervy storytelling will keep you guessing until the very last page.

Before she can stop him, the dog charges into the water to retrieve what first appears to be a wayward stick, but to her horror, turns out to be something much more sinister...

The four girls were best friends at Salten, a second-rate boarding school set near the cliffs of the English Channel. Each different in their own way, the four became inseparable and were notorious for playing the Lying Game, telling lies at every turn to both fellow boarders and faculty, with varying states of serious and flippant nature that were disturbing enough to ensure that everyone steered clear of them. The myriad and complicated rules of the game are strict: no lying to each other --- ever. Bail on the lie when it becomes clear it is about to be found out. But their little game had consequences, and the girls were all expelled in their final year of school under mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the school’s eccentric art teacher, Ambrose (who also happens to be Kate’s father).
