News About Our Favorite Event of the Year…and More!
It’s been a crazy time as the second nor’easter in the tri-state area swept through here and left us without power for part of five days; the third storm today only hit the city mildly. I am sure there were many book club meetings that had to be rescheduled! This has been one very wild winter.
This is one reason I am happy to focus here on some events and programs that are guaranteed to make our readers smile.
First, I'm excited to announce the details of our 7th Annual Book Group Speed Dating Event, which will take place on Friday, June 1st from 2pm to 3:50pm at BookExpo in New York. Representatives from more than 20(!) publishers will be in attendance to share selections and book group news from their publishing houses in a speed-dating format designed to give booksellers, librarians and book group leaders an inside look at what book groups will want to know for fall and winter. Galley giveaways and ideas for enhancing book group discussions will be part of this event. Advance signup is required by Monday, May 21st at noon ET. Be sure to fill out this form to sign up. Please note that you have to be registered for BookExpo to attend. Read on for more details later in this newsletter.
Sarah Jessica Parker has selected ANATOMY OF A MIRACLE by Jonathan Miles as her latest ALA Book Club Central Pick. According to Parker, "Jonathan Miles is a great American storyteller, a writer to celebrate with a new novel easily devoured. His tender, life-affirming ANATOMY OF A MIRACLE follows paraplegic veteran Cameron Harris and his sister Tanya after Cameron suddenly regains the ability to walk. The story in these pages is astoundingly joyous and deeply humane, and I can’t wait to share it with you all as the new selection for Book Club Central." We have a discussion guide for the book, which you can check out here.
I am hoping to attend a session about Book Club Central at the Public Library Association conference next week in Philadelphia. I am going to be there for a day or so, with a jam-packed schedule. PLA is one of my favorite conferences, and the idea that there is a book group-themed program there makes me happy!
In other news, Barnes & Noble announced last week the launch of the Barnes & Noble Book Club, which, according to their press release, is “a national book club designed to bring readers in communities across the country together to discuss some of the greatest books being published.” B&N “will host a free Book Club night seasonally at its 632 stores nationwide, which will be led by its expert booksellers and feature exclusive content and special in-store promotions for book club members. Bestselling author Meg Wolitzer’s novel, THE FEMALE PERSUASION, has been chosen as the first book club pick for the inaugural Book Club night, which will take place on May 2, from 6pm-7pm local time, at stores across the country.” You can think about participating in this with your book group or on your own.
March’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest book is EXIT WEST by Mohsin Hamid, which appeared on MANY “Best Books of 2017” lists and was a Book Club Central Pick in October. Newly released in paperback, it is March’s pick for the PBS NewsHour-New York Times book club “Now Read This” and is a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Awards in the Fiction category (the winners will be announced this Thursday the 15th).
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people --- Nadia and Saeed --- meet and become involved in a love affair. When the unrest in their city explodes, they begin to hear whispers about doors --- doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through. We’re giving three readers the chance to win 12 copies of the book for their group. Be sure to enter here by Wednesday, April 4th at noon ET. You can see the discussion guide here and our review on Bookreporter.com here. I have heard fabulous things about this book and finally have a copy on my reading pile.
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW by Amor Towles, BEFORE WE WERE YOURS by Lisa Wingate, THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD by Colson Whitehead, BENEATH A SCARLET SKY by Mark Sullivan, and LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
We’re also happy to announce a contest for Iris Martin Cohen’s debut novel, THE LITTLE CLAN. Twenty-five-year-old Ava Gallanter is the librarian in residence at the Lazarus Club, an ancient, dwindling Manhattan arts club full of eccentric geriatric residents. Despite the differences in age, Ava feels right at home. When her friend, Stephanie, returns after an unplanned year abroad, she vows to rescue Ava from a life of obscurity. Stephanie promises to make Ava’s dream of becoming a writer come true, and together they start a Victorian-inspired literary salon at the Lazarus Club. However, Ava’s romanticized idea of the salon quickly erodes as Stephanie’s ambitions take the women in an unexpected --- and precarious --- direction. The book doesn’t release until April 17th, but we’re awarding 10 advance copies to five groups each. To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, April 4th at noon ET. In the meantime, click here to take a look at the guide.
You only have until next Thursday, March 22nd at noon ET to enter our contest for ISLAND OF SWEET PIES AND SOLDIERS, Sara Ackerman’s debut novel. Violet Iverson and her young daughter, Ella, are piecing their lives together one year after the disappearance of her husband. As rumors swirl and questions about his loyalties surface, Violet believes Ella knows something. But Ella is stubbornly silent. Something --- or someone --- has scared her. And with the island overrun by troops training for a secret mission, tension and suspicion between neighbors is rising. Click here to read more about the book and here for the guide.
And please keep in mind that Monday, March 19th is the last day you can send submissions in Sourcebook’s contest celebrating the recent release of CARNEGIE’S MAID by Marie Benedict, a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. Vote for your library so they can win $2,000 --- and you will have the chance to receive a $100 gift card! This is all in the spirit of Andrew Carnegie and his extensive philanthropic endeavors.
This month, we’re featuring the guide for yet another debut novel, THE RELUCTANT FORTUNE-TELLER by Keziah Frost. At 73, Norbert Zelenka is broke and alone except for the company of a Chihuahua. But when “Carlotta’s Club” --- three strong-willed seniors --- decides to make Norbert their latest project, he reluctantly agrees to their scheme: establishing himself as the town’s fortune-teller. Soon his life begins changing in unexpected ways. It turns out that years of observing other people make Norbert an excellent card reader. But when a troubled young woman goes missing after a bad reading, Norbert must find a strength beyond the cards to bring her home safely. Click here for the guide.
Also, be sure to check out the guides for ALL THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS, Elizabeth J. Church’s novel about a gutsy showgirl who tries to conquer her past amongst the glamour of 1960s Las Vegas (it will be a Bets On pick); IF I DIE TONIGHT by Alison Gaylin, a psychological thriller in which a seemingly open-and-shut police case with a clear-cut hero and villain turns out to be anything but simple; and THE WHOLE WAY HOME, Sarah Creech’s second novel (now available in paperback) about a radiant talent on the brink of making it big in Nashville who must confront her small-town past and an old love she has never forgotten.
Which of the titles that appeared on our “Reader-Selected Best Books of 2017” list have you read, or do you plan to read, with your group? That’s our latest poll question; let us know by clicking here.
In our previous poll, we wanted to know how many books you read in a month outside of the reading that you do for your book group. 41% of you said 5 or more; of that percentage, 17% read 10 or more. We love that you are such avid readers. Click here for all the results.
A few weeks ago, I heard from a friend who lives in the town next to me. She wants to start a book group for working mothers and is looking for suggestions for what to read: “We are a group of working moms of young kids (mostly). We have a love of reading, but not a lot of time to do it (and we’re tired most of the time!). So it needs to be something that isn’t too heavy, but has some depth to it for discussion.” I asked our Bookreporter.com readers for their feedback, and this garnered a HUGE response from them. We compiled all of their suggestions into a single blog post, which you can see here. MANY thanks to all who took the time to share their recommendations with us. I am hoping that my schedule stays clear to attend their first discussion on April 9th; their first discussion title will be SMALL GREAT THINGS by Jodi Picoult.
The New York Times is now publishing audiobook bestseller lists for the first time. These lists, which will appear on a monthly basis only and debuted last Thursday, will note the top 15 fiction and top 15 nonfiction audio titles from the previous month. Click here for their inaugural fiction audio list and here for the first nonfiction list. You can read the full story here. I have been eager for them to do these lists to highlight audio, so I am very excited to see these first lists. And for those who entered our recent audiobook contest for Kristin Hannah’s THE GREAT ALONE, the audiobook hit the New York Times list at #3!
I am finalizing a couple of events in the tri-state area that I am going to do between April and August. I will share them in the next newsletter. I love meeting our readers, so I am hoping many of you can join me!
Enjoy your next book group discussion. We’ll be back with another newsletter in two weeks!

"What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?" Contest: Enter to Win 12 Copies of
EXIT WEST by Mohsin Hamid for Your Group
Each month, we ask book groups to share the titles they are reading that month and rate them. From all entries, three winners will be selected, and each will win 12 copies of that month’s prize book for their group. Note: To be eligible to win, let us know the title of the book that YOUR book group is CURRENTLY reading, NOT the title we are giving away.
This month's prize book is EXIT WEST by Mohsin Hamid, which is March’s pick for the PBS NewsHour-New York Times book club “Now Read This.” Now available in paperback, this finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Awards is an astonishingly visionary love story that imagines the forces that drive ordinary people from their homes into the uncertain embrace of new lands. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, April 4th at noon ET.
EXIT WEST by Mohsin Hamid (Fiction)
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet --- sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors --- doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through.
EXIT WEST follows these remarkable characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, to their past, to the very sense of who they are. Profoundly intimate and powerfully inventive, it tells an unforgettable story of love, loyalty and courage that is both completely of our time and for all time.

New Special Contest: Enter to Win 10 Advance Copies of THE LITTLE CLAN by Iris Martin Cohen for Your Group
We are celebrating the April 17th release of Iris Martin Cohen's debut novel, THE LITTLE CLAN --- a love letter to classic literature and an illuminating look at newfound adulthood --- with a special contest that will give five groups the chance to win 10 advance copies of the book. To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, April 4th at noon ET.
THE LITTLE CLAN by Iris Martin Cohen (Fiction)
Ava Gallanter is the librarian in residence at the Lazarus Club, an ancient, dwindling Manhattan arts club full of eccentric geriatric residents stuck in a long-gone era. Twenty-five-year-old Ava, however, feels right at home. She leads a quiet life, surrounded by her beloved books and sequestered away from her peers.
When Ava’s enigmatic friend, Stephanie, returns after an unplanned year abroad, the intoxicating opportunist vows to rescue Ava from a life of obscurity. Stephanie, on the hunt for fame and fortune, promises to make Ava’s dream of becoming a writer come true, and together they start a Victorian-inspired literary salon at the Lazarus Club. However, Ava’s romanticized idea of the salon quickly erodes as Stephanie’s ambitions take the women in an unexpected --- and precarious --- direction.
In this humorous yet keenly observant coming-of-age story, Cohen brings us into a boisterous literary world bathed in hubris and ambition. With eloquent prose and affecting storytelling, THE LITTLE CLAN is both a wickedly fun yet sharply insightful look at friendship, feminism and finding yourself in your 20s.

Recent Bookreporter.com Bets On Selections:
EDUCATED by Tara Westover and ROSIE COLORED GLASSES by Brianna Wolfson
EDUCATED: A Memoir by Tara Westover (Memoir)
EDUCATED by Tara Westover is a brilliant memoir by a young woman who grew up living off the grid with her Mormon family in Idaho. No school. No doctors. And not even a birth certificate to note the date of her birth. Most everyday ways that we live our lives are viewed as "outside" and "wrong."
As you can imagine, Tara’s family lives a tough life. They bear witness to devastating accidents, and instead of seeking traditional medical care, her father allows her mother to treat them with healing herbs. These are used for typical scrapes and scratches, as well as horrific burns from gasoline explosions. For months, her mother cowers in the basement as she recovers from what clearly was a concussion. There is familial abuse, which is tragically ignored.

ROSIE COLORED GLASSES by Brianna Wolfson (Fiction)
In ROSIE COLORED GLASSES by Brianna Wolfson, Rosie is the fun mother. With her daughter, Willow, she will play dress-up; a party with a candy fest in the middle of the night is not untypical. Rex is less impulsive. He is the serious parent. While Rex loves Rosie, their lives collide too much to stay together. After the divorce, the children bounce between the two parents. Rex is a traditional dad, while Rosie’s behavior becomes more and more erratic.
Readers see that something is not normal here. Rosie is bipolar, and she is unraveling. What does Willow see? Does she still wear the rose-colored glasses, or is she ready to understand her mother for who she is?
