A Visit to a FIRST Book Group Meeting
Last night, I spent a lovely evening at the first meeting of the Long Hill Book Club. Tara, a publishing colleague who I had worked with a while back, wrote me to share that she (above left) and her friend, Kathleen (second from left), wanted to start a book club, which would be made up mostly of moms of young children, who were short on time and energy, but who were interested in reading more than books to their children.
She invited me to their first meeting, where they read SMALL GREAT THINGS by Jodi Picoult, a book that I recommended. I felt this book would have enough meat on its bones to get them started. Eleven women were at this meeting; while many had young children, there were a couple of us with high school and college-aged kids. All had read the book, and Tara was prepared to lead with discussion questions. We started by telling a bit about ourselves. Many were lapsed readers who were looking to get back to reading for pleasure as they had missed reading; a few were avid readers. One woman had listened to the month's selection on audio, which later sparked a conversation about how with audio you can log a lot more reading time!
The discussion was lively, talking about everything from Jodi’s ability to be informed to tell this story as a white woman (the conclusion: she did a lot of research, but even that did not assign her the real understanding of what it meant to be a black woman), to the epilogue, which they had different ideas on what they would have wanted to see with it. I loved how they shared stories from their own lives and perspectives from their own careers. Among them were a social worker, a scientist and a hygienist, each of whom brought stories to the table about being thrust into work situations of either power or race. It was refreshing to hear their perspectives.
I was able to talk about things I had learned about the writing of the book, as I had heard Jodi speak about it on more than one occasion. Prior to the meeting, I had shared videos of Jodi with Tara to give her some aid in leading the discussion. It was a very fulfilling evening. They wanted something lighter for their next read, so they will be reading ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman, which I think will be perfect for them. And yes, this was one of the selections that had been recommended by our readers. Thank you again for that.
Nights like this, when I get to spend time with readers, is just lovely for me. I learned so much from them. Oh, and yes, there was wine, but there was a lot of wine left over for the next meeting; they were here to talk about the book. And there were some amazing brownies with espresso that we all discovered as we were wrapping up. I hope their discussions continue to be this interesting as the group evolves, and those who had veered away from reading are motivated to read more. I appreciated being invited to be a part of this inaugural night and would like to return, as my schedule allows. And a huge thanks to Tara for asking me to join them.
Oh, a moment in the evening that made me reflect on having young children was when we settled onto the three couches for a discussion. There was much excitement that six of the seats reclined so people could sit "feet up," and one mom exclaimed, "I am reclining and I am not sitting on Legos!" I loved it as it brought back a flood of memories.
Now to our update, which has FOUR contests and lots of news.
Just as we did for the audio version of Kristin Hannah’s THE GREAT ALONE in February, we’re giving you the chance to win the audiobook of Lisa Scottoline’s new novel, AFTER ANNA, which is narrated by Mozhan Marno and Jeremy Bobb. In this latest BIG contest, 10 book groups will win up to six digital copies of the audiobook and give us their feedback on it. We also are awarding 40 listeners a physical copy of the audiobook.
Dr. Noah Alderman has remarried Maggie Ippolitti, who unexpectedly gets another chance to be a mother to the child she thought she had lost forever: her only daughter, Anna. But events take a heartbreaking turn when Anna is killed, and Noah goes on trial for the murder. A devastated Maggie must face the realization that the man she loves is responsible for such a heinous crime. In the wake of this unthinkable tragedy, new information drives Maggie to search for the truth, leading her to discover something darker than she ever could have imagined.
All the contest details can here found here, and the deadline for your entries is Wednesday, May 2nd at noon ET. Also, be sure to listen to an audiobook clip here, and don’t miss our review of the hardcover in the April 13th edition of the Bookreporter.com Weekly Update newsletter. April’s “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest book is THE TEA GIRL OF HUMMINGBIRD LANE by Lisa See, a New York Times bestseller that’s now available in paperback. It was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection when it released in hardcover and a #1 “Off the Shelf” pick, where readers noted what they were reading or wanted to read.
In their remote mountain village, Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. For the Akha people, life goes on as it has for generations --- until a stranger appears at the village gate. Slowly, Li-yan begins to reject the customs that shaped her early life. When she has a baby out of wedlock, she rejects the tradition that would compel her to give the child over to be killed, and instead leaves her near an orphanage. Despite being raised by loving adoptive parents, Li-yan’s daughter, Haley, wonders about her origins. Across the ocean Li-yan longs for her lost daughter. Over the course of years, each searches for meaning in the study of Pu’er, the tea that has shaped their family’s destiny for centuries.
We’re giving three readers the chance to win 12 copies of the paperback for their group. Be sure to fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, May 2nd at noon ET. You can see the discussion guide here, our review on Bookreporter.com here, and my Bets On commentary here.

THE TEA GIRL OF HUMMINGBIRD LANE by Lisa See (Fiction)
In their remote mountain village, Li-yan and her family align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. For the Akha people, ensconced in ritual and routine, life goes on as it has for generations --- until a stranger appears at the village gate in a jeep, the first automobile any of the villagers has ever seen.
The stranger’s arrival marks the first entrance of the modern world in the lives of the Akha people. Slowly, Li-yan, one of the few educated girls on her mountain, begins to reject the customs that shaped her early life. When she has a baby out of wedlock --- conceived with a man her parents consider a poor choice --- she rejects the tradition that would compel her to give the child over to be killed, and instead leaves her, wrapped in a blanket with a tea cake tucked in its folds, near an orphanage in a nearby city.
As Li-yan comes into herself, leaving her insular village for an education, a business and city life, her daughter, Haley, is raised in California by loving adoptive parents. Despite her privileged childhood, Haley wonders about her origins. Across the ocean Li-yan longs for her lost daughter. Over the course of years, each searches for meaning in the study of Pu’er, the tea that has shaped their family’s destiny for centuries.

New Featured Guide: MY DEAR HAMILTON
by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie
MY DEAR HAMILTON: A Novel of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie (Historical Fiction)
In this haunting, moving and beautifully written novel, Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza Schuyler Hamilton’s story as it’s never been told before --- not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal, but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.
A general’s daughter...
Coming of age on the perilous frontier of revolutionary New York, Elizabeth Schuyler champions the fight for independence. And when she meets Alexander Hamilton, Washington’s penniless but passionate aide-de-camp, she’s captivated by the young officer’s charisma and brilliance. They fall in love, despite Hamilton’s bastard birth and the uncertainties of war.
A founding father’s wife...
But the union they create --- in their marriage and the new nation --- is far from perfect. From glittering inaugural balls to bloody street riots, the Hamiltons are at the center of it all --- including the political treachery of America’s first sex scandal, which forces Eliza to struggle through heartbreak and betrayal to find forgiveness.
The last surviving light of the Revolution...
When a duel destroys Eliza’s hard-won peace, the grieving widow fights her husband’s enemies to preserve Alexander’s legacy. But long-buried secrets threaten everything Eliza believes about her marriage and her own legacy. Questioning her tireless devotion to the man and country that have broken her heart, she’s left with one last battle --- to understand the flawed man she married and imperfect union he never could have created without her.

EVERY NOTE PLAYED
and THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR Audiobook
EVERY NOTE PLAYED by Lisa Genova (Fiction)
More than two decades ago, a friend told me that his dad had ALS. I still remember his abject sadness as he described how his father was losing functionality. Then, a couple of years ago, our friend, Peter, was diagnosed. He was living in Florida at the time, and my husband and I thought we would fly down to see him in April. It was a well-laid plan, but he passed away in March, stunning both of us. Also, a couple of years ago, I read UNTIL I SAY GOOD-BYE: My Year of Living with Joy, a memoir by Susan Spencer-Wendel, who had ALS and was determined to live every day. That, too, was a Bets On selection.
All this to say that when I read Lisa Genova’s latest novel, which looks at the world of ALS, I was not coming to the subject of this book as a novice. That said, I knew that in Lisa’s hands, it would be deftly crafted and addressed. And indeed it was.

THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR Audiobook written by Sally Hepworth, read by Barrie Kreinik (Psychological Thriller/Mystery)
I so enjoyed listening to Sally Hepworth’s latest novel, THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR, which is narrated by Barrie Kreinik. I am a huge fan of Sally’s writing and was lamenting that I had not read this book when our review came out a few weeks ago. Remember Wisteria Lane, the street featured on “Desperate Housewives,” where there always was some drama going on? Sally has a version of that town for you here.
Essie has two beautiful children, one of whom is a young baby. Her mom spoils her children and is a big part of their lives. Essie, at least on the outside, is completely living a dream life. However, there are still whispers behind her back about the time she had a bit of a breakdown and walked away from the park, leaving her daughter behind.
