Changing Things Up at Your Book Group
We know that many groups like to change things up a bit and are looking to try different genres. A number of you have told us that you are looking for a thriller that can spark a conversation. I think we have one for you. NEED TO KNOW by Karen Cleveland, a New York Times bestseller that releases in paperback on July 24th, is the new prize book in our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. When I read it last year, a publishing contact told me that I would read it in four hours. And so I did --- and I loved it. It was a completely propulsive read, and as soon as I closed it, I knew it was going to be a Bookreporter.com Bets On title.
In it, Vivian Miller is a high-powered CIA analyst who is happily married and the mother of four children. But her life is upended when she makes a shocking discovery that leads her to question everything she believes. She thought she knew her husband inside and out, but now she wonders if it was all a lie. How far will she go to learn the truth?
We’re giving three groups the chance to win 12 copies of this debut thriller. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Monday, September 10th at noon ET (that’s right…we’re giving you TWO months to submit your entries rather than the usual one month). Click here for the guide, here for our review on Bookreporter.com, and here for my Bets On commentary. It was recently announced that Academy Award winner Charlize Theron is set to star in and produce the film adaptation of NEED TO KNOW. We will share more details on this project as soon as they become available.
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: BEFORE WE WERE YOURS by Lisa Wingate, THE GREAT ALONE by Kristin Hannah, ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman, HILLBILLY ELEGY: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance, and LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
If you have done anything to change up what your book group is doing, we would love to hear about it. Send me a note at [email protected] with the subject line "Book Group Change Up."
You only have until Wednesday, July 25th at noon ET to enter our contest for RAINY DAY FRIENDS, the second full-length entry in Jill Shalvis’ Wildstone series following her women’s fiction debut, LOST AND FOUND SISTERS. When Lanie Jacobs finds out that her late husband tricked several women, including herself, into believing that each of them was his legally wedded wife, she decides to make a fresh start. Lanie takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery, where she seems to fit right in. Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of 21-year-old River Green has the potential to turn her life upside down again. All you have to do is fill out this form to be one of the three readers who will win 12 copies of the book for their group.
We also want to be sure you have this major contest news on your radar. Penguin Random House is giving away all 100(!) books from PBS’s "Great American Read" series, which profiles America’s most beloved books. Click here to enter to win this epic grand prize (and don't forget to vote for your favorite novel from the list!). The deadline for your entries is Friday, August 31st at 11pm ET.
Earlier this year, we featured a contest that allowed 10 groups the chance to win up to six digital copies of the audiobook of Lisa Scottoline’s AFTER ANNA (read by Mozhan Marno and Jeremy Bobb) and give us their feedback on it. We’ve compiled the comments from our winning groups, which you can see here. Many thanks to all who listened to AFTER ANNA and took the time to share their opinions with us. If you have listened to this book on your own, we would love to hear from you about it. Drop me a note at [email protected] with the subject line “I listened to AFTER ANNA.”
Our latest featured guide is for THE BOOKSHOP OF YESTERDAYS by debut novelist Amy Meyerson. Miranda Brooks loved spending time in her eccentric uncle Billy’s bookstore and solving the inventive scavenger hunts he created just for her. But on her 12th birthday, Billy had a mysterious falling-out with her mother and was not heard from again. Sixteen years later, Miranda learns that Billy has died and left her Prospero Books, which is in danger of going bankrupt, and one final scavenger hunt. Miranda soon finds herself drawn into a journey where she meets people from Billy’s past whose stories reveal a history that Miranda’s mother has kept hidden --- and the terrible secret that tore her family apart. Click here for the guide. And be sure to also check out our Bookreporter.com review and our interview with Amy.
We have two additional guides for this update: THE LAST THING I TOLD YOU by Emily Arsenault, a psychological thriller about the murder of a psychologist in a quiet New England town and his former patient with a violent past; and THE LIDO, Libby Page’s charming, feel-good debut novel that will be a Bets On pick.
How many book groups are you a member of? That’s our latest poll question; click here to let us know! We get this question a lot and know that many of you are in more than one group, so do chime in.
In our previous poll, we wanted to know which months your book group typically meets during the summer. And it’s clear that most of you do not take a summer break from your group! Here’s the breakdown: June (84%), July (73%), August (72%) --- and only 9% do not meet in the summer. I know my mom migrates from her at-home book group (which does not meet in the summer) to her beach book group (which meets year-round).
My book group is not taking the summer off. Our next selection is ORPHAN TRAIN by Christina Baker Kline.
Just a reminder that on Tuesday, July 24th at 5pm ET, Simon & Schuster will host a Facebook Live Book Club chat with Alice Hoffman. Her latest book, THE RULES OF MAGIC, which is now available in paperback, is the inaugural title in S&S's Book Club Favorites, a new initiative that features and promotes noteworthy book club titles. Feel free to submit any questions you may have for Alice on this page, and there's a chance she'll answer them during the live stream. At the conclusion of this chat, August's pick will be revealed. Click here for much more info on the program and how you and your group can get involved!
I have two more Summer Reading Library events coming up. One is on Wednesday, August 1st at 6pm at the Avalon Public Library in Avalon, New Jersey, and the second is on Wednesday, August 15th at 7pm at the Levittown Public Library on Long Island. I hope to see some of our readers there.
Here's to a great month of reading and a great discussion if your group is meeting this month. If not, use this month to read something to suggest to your group!

Featured Guide: THE DEVIL’S REWARD
by Emmanuelle de Villepin
THE DEVIL'S REWARD written by Emmanuelle de Villepin, translated by C. Jon Delogu (Fiction)
Christiane, 86 years old with a vibrant sense of humor, lives alone in a large apartment in the heart of Paris. Her daughter, Catherine, is her total opposite: sullen and uptight, filled with resentment toward her unfaithful Milanese husband. After discovering yet another affair, Catherine takes refuge in Paris at her mother’s home, accompanied by her own daughter, Luna. Christiane --- who, in spite of occasional dalliances on both sides, lived a beautiful love story with her late husband --- uses all of her freethinking charm in an effort to change Catherine’s rigid, self-pitying attitude.
As the women air their opposing views, Luna discovers by chance that her great-grandfather had met the philosopher Rudolf Steiner, the subject of the thesis she is in the middle of writing. Seeing Luna’s avid curiosity, Christiane takes the opportunity to tell the story of her family, which spans the 20th century. Memories resurface, and past events are reconstructed, shedding a new light on the present.
With a keen, lighthearted wit, THE DEVIL'S REWARD shows that life is complicated and often painful, but when conventional morals are imperative, it becomes unbearable.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LULULEMONS Audiobook
written by Lauren Weisberger, read by Laura Benanti
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LULULEMONS Audiobook written by Lauren Weisberger, read by Laura Benanti (Fiction)
Audiobook listeners know that it’s all about the narrator. I was wildly impressed with Laura Benanti, who narrated Lauren Weisberger's WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LULULEMONS. Every character’s voice was distinct and completely captured their personalities and nuances, which made the listening experience all the more fun. I found myself laughing out loud so many times.
Lauren hit the same groove that worked so well in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. This time, the setting is Greenwich, Connecticut, and she captures the “I can one-up you” vibe of the town in pitch-perfect style.
Miriam has moved there as her husband sold his company, and they wanted their three children to grow up outside the city. She has given up her high-powered job as an attorney with some longing and regret. Emily Charlton, who many will remember as an assistant to the infamous Miranda Priestly, is now an image consultant to the stars. But there’s a feeling that she’s a bit long in the tooth, and out of the social media groove, and her clients are zipping off to the new guard for their coddling.
But then the perfect opportunity comes along. Karolina Hartwell, a former supermodel who walked the runway for Victoria’s Secret, among others, is arrested for a DUI. Karolina is married to a well-connected senator, and suddenly her world inside the Beltway is plucked away. She retreats to Greenwich where Miriam knows her, and Emily sees her as a way to make a comeback --- and, in an interesting way, Miranda lends a hand.
It’s a fast-paced romp of a read, and I mean that in the best possible sense. Lauren layers great lines on top of one another and consistently ups the ante. Enjoy it on audio if you can!
