Our non-summer in the New York metro area is winding down; it was sultry, hot, humid, rainy and cold, with a few lovely days thrown in for good measure. Luckily, one can read in any weather!
Next weekend kicks off the late summer/fall book festival season. The National Book Festival is in Washington, DC on September 1st, and the Decatur Book Festival in Georgia also is on Labor Day weekend. If any of you are attending, please let me know as we would love to have some of our readers cover these events for us.
I will be moderating two events for the Morristown Festival of Books on October 13th. I will be interviewing Fiona Davis (THE MASTERPIECE) and Kate Quinn (THE ALICE NETWORK) on one panel, and Kate Morton (THE CLOCKMAKER’S DAUGHTER) and Diane Chamberlain (THE DREAM DAUGHTER) on another. You can find the author lineup for the Festival here. We try to stay on top of all book festivals happening around the country. You can see those listed here.
Just four days after my Morristown appearance, I will be headed to the HarperCollins offices for "A Night Out", a book club event presented by Book Club Girl. There, I will be be moderating a panel featuring Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig and Karen White, whose collaborative novel, THE GLASS OCEAN, releases on September 4th. Attendees will have the chance to mingle with the authors, fellow readers and book clubs, receive an autographed copy of THE GLASS OCEAN and Karen's recent book, DREAMS OF FALLING, as well as advance copies of both Lauren's and Beatriz's upcoming books --- and so much more. Click here for all the details and to purchase your tickets. I am really excited about this evening and hope to see many of you there.
My book club met on Monday night, and I learned something that I had missed as we discussed ORPHAN TRAIN by Christina Baker Kline. One of our group leaders, Tara, asked how we felt about the extra chapter that had been added to the book. I had read the book before it came out, and this was not in there, and others had read different versions --- none the same as Tara. And one woman had listened to it on audio. It ends up that after the book was released, Christina heard the same question from readers in email and when she met with book clubs. It involved a key decision one of her protagonists makes in the book. Christina longed “to write a scene in which she clarifies Vivian’s motivations.” These new insights and feelings appear here, as well as in newer editions.
Our next book for discussion will be LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng. I am looking forward to this as it was a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. I love when I already have read the book. I do remember what my friend, Margie Scott Tucker, at Books Inc. told me. When she already has read the book, she listens to it on audio before the discussion to refresh her memory. Great tip!
For this update, we are debuting the discussion guide for MAKE ME EVEN AND I’LL NEVER GAMBLE AGAIN, hedge fund pioneer Jerrold Fine's debut novel, which is my latest Bets On pick. Rogers Stout has the gambler’s gifts --- a titanic brain, an uncanny ability to read people, and a risk-taker’s daring. As an apathetic high school student who loves baseball but lacks a 90-mph fastball, he knows that the game does not begin until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. But his life needs direction. Everything changes the summer he is invited into the boisterous environment of an investment bank’s trading room, and to a gambling hall dive where he immediately wins big at poker, capturing the attention of his co-workers with his card-playing skills. Along with the guide, be sure to check out our review on Bookreporter.com, our interview with Jerrold, my Bets On commentary, and feedback we received from early readers of the book.
We also are featuring THE SECRET OF THE IRISH CASTLE, the conclusion to Santa Montefiore’s Deverill Chronicles trilogy, which is now in stores. Peace has flourished since the Great War ended, and a new generation of the Deverill family is waiting to make their mark. When Martha Wallace leaves her home in America to search for her birth mother in Dublin, she never imagines that she will completely lose her heart to the impossibly charming JP Deverill. But more surprises are in store for her after she discovers that her mother comes from the same place as JP, sealing her fate. As long-held secrets come to light, the Deverills will have to heal old wounds and come to terms with the past if they hope to ensure their legacy for the future. While no guide is available for THE SECRET OF THE IRISH CASTLE, be sure to check out our historical fiction discussion questions, which may help you in your group's discussion of the book.

MAKE ME EVEN AND I'LL NEVER GAMBLE AGAIN by Jerrold Fine (Fiction)
Rogers Stout has the gambler’s gifts --- a titanic brain, an uncanny ability to read people, and a risk-taker’s daring. As an apathetic high school student who loves baseball but lacks a 90-mph fastball, he knows that the game does not begin until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. But his life needs direction.
Everything changes the summer he is invited into the boisterous environment of an investment bank’s trading room, and to a gambling hall dive where he immediately wins big at poker, capturing the attention of his co-workers with his card-playing skills. Intrigued by trading markets, Rogers’ intellectual curiosity takes him to Wharton and then Wall Street, where he faces challenges as an outsider who thinks and acts differently from the white-shoe establishment. With his intuition and prowess, he’s ready to rewrite the rules and tackle markets with a flair that leaves his employers flabbergasted.
Rogers senses opportunity and willingly accepts the challenge that awaits him. He leans heavily on his gut instincts and the unusual cadre of friendships he cultivates, but learns the hard way to be alert to the perils that await him. He longs to prove himself and achieve his goals, yet is torn between the thrill of trading and investing, and pursuing a higher purpose in life. And through it all, he still feels the loss of his mother, who died when he was too young to remember her --- an open wound that refuses to heal.
As Rogers plays his career hand, life plays another. Should he follow the temptress Elsbeth and her ravishing beauty, or Charlotte, his high-spirited first love?
An intriguing look at human aspiration and the interplay of honor, greed, fear and individuality, MAKE ME EVEN AND I'LL NEVER GAMBLE AGAIN reveals a time when a new generation upended the status quo on Wall Street and forever changed investing.

Featured Guide: A LIGHT SO LOVELY by Sarah Arthur
A LIGHT SO LOVELY: The Spiritual Legacy of Madeleine L'Engle, Author of A Wrinkle in Time by Sarah Arthur (Biography)
Bestselling and beloved author Madeleine L'Engle, Newbery winner for A WRINKLE IN TIME, was known the world round for her imaginative spirit and stories. She was also known to spark controversy --- too Christian for some, too unorthodox for others. Somewhere in the middle was a complex woman whose embrace of paradox has much to say to a new generation of readers today.
A LIGHT SO LOVELY paints a vivid portrait of this enigmatic icon's spiritual legacy, starting with her inner world and expanding into fresh reflections of her writing for readers today. Listen in on intimate interviews with L'Engle's literary contemporaries such as Philip Yancey and Luci Shaw, L'Engle's granddaughter Charlotte Jones Voiklis, and influential fans such as Makoto Fujimura, Nikki Grimes and Sarah Bessey, as they reveal new layers to the woman behind the stories we know and love. A vibrant, imaginative read, this book pulls back the curtain to illuminate L'Engle's creative journey, her persevering faith, and the inspiring, often unexpected ways these two forces converged.
For anyone earnestly searching the space between sacred and secular, miracle and science, faith and art, come and find a kindred spirit and trusted guide in Madeleine --- the Mrs. Whatsit to our Meg Murry --- as she sparks our imagination anew.

DESOLATION MOUNTAIN by William Kent Krueger
DESOLATION MOUNTAIN by William Kent Krueger (Mystery/Thriller)
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
To Stephen O’Connor, Hamlet’s dour observation is more than just words. All his life, he has had visions of tragedies to come. When he experiences the vision of a great bird shot from the sky, he knows something terrible is about to happen. The crash of a private plane on Desolation Mountain in a remote part of the Iron Lake Reservation, which kills a United States senator and most of her family, confirms Stephen’s worst fears.
Stephen joins his father, Cork O’Connor and a few Ojibwe men from the nearby Iron Lake reservation to sift through the smoldering wreckage when the FBI arrives and quickly assumes control of the situation. What seems like the end of the O’Connors’ involvement is, however, only the beginning of a harrowing journey to understand the truth behind the Senator’s death. As he initiates his own probe, Cork O’Connor stumbles upon a familiar face in Bo Thorson, a private security consultant whose unnamed clients have hired him to look quietly into the cause of the crash. The men agree to join forces in their investigation, but soon Cork begins to wonder if Thorson’s loyalties lie elsewhere.
In that far north Minnesota County, which is overrun with agents of the FBI, NTSB, DoD and even members of a right-wing militia, all of whom have their own agendas, Cork, Stephen and Bo attempt to navigate a perilous course. Roadblocked by lies from the highest levels of government, uncertain who to trust, and facing growing threats the deeper they dig for answers, the three men finally understand that to get to the truth, they will have to face the great menace, a beast of true evil lurking in the woods --- a beast with a murderous intent of unimaginable scale.

MAKE ME EVEN AND I'LL NEVER GAMBLE AGAIN
by Jerrold Fine, THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis,
and GHOSTED by Rosie Walsh
MAKE ME EVEN AND I'LL NEVER GAMBLE AGAIN by Jerrold Fine (Fiction)
MAKE ME EVEN AND I’LL NEVER GAMBLE AGAIN by hedge fund pioneer Jerrold Fine is a coming-of-age novel set in the 1960s and ’70s that has a lot of heart and soul. I love the voice of the book’s protagonist, Rogers Stout. He’s a Midwest guy who finds his way to Wharton and then to Wall Street after an internship in Cincinnati. Along the way, he does not forget his values or his roots as he begins to play the financial game. At the start, he’s playing poker at an invite-only game; he learned poker at Sunday night suppers with his dad, but at this table the stakes are a lot higher. The way he plays and strategizes, he takes on the energy of a poker game in Molly’s Game, albeit in a cool, calculated way. Rogers is in control and ready to run the table, with nerves of steel.

THE MASTERPIECE by Fiona Davis (Historical Fiction)
I have been a longtime fan of Fiona Davis’ books, so I was excited to read her third novel, THE MASTERPIECE. Fiona does a fabulous job of weaving history (always two different periods) and iconic New York City locations together. She links her protagonists together, giving readers a rich reading experience that immerses them in the history of the property and conveys a strong sense of each time period.

GHOSTED by Rosie Walsh (Fiction)
GHOSTED by Rosie Walsh is the kind of book that you want to have time to just sit, read and enjoy. While I was reading it, there were many times that I had to control myself from flipping to see how it ended. On one level, it begins as an often-told story of girl meets boy, they fall for one another, boy disappears and girl wonders why.
