Book Festivals, Looking for Book Club Leaders
Who Love Audiobooks, and More
For many, the chance to go to a book festival and mingle with readers and other authors is a great opportunity. I have been to a number of festivals through the years; this year I went to an event that is 11 years old, but is new to me: the Tucson Festival of Books. I had the chance to meet some of our readers there --- and one of them, Muriel Logan, wrote a terrific blog about the event for us. We also put together a photo gallery of the panels I moderated, along with the authors I saw and the readers I met. You can read more commentary from me about the Festival in the Bookreporter.com newsletter from last week. Since I know that some of you get that newsletter, I do not want to repeat myself here.
If any of you are going to the Virginia Festival of the Book in Charlottesville next week, please let me know. They have a great lineup there; I wish I could attend! Many of you have written asking for a list of upcoming festivals; you can find that here. And if you are going to any, do let us know, as we love reports and photos from our readers.
Speaking of which, our reader Denise Neary had the opportunity to chat with the Mayor of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Jud Ashman, about the Gaithersburg Book Festival, which he founded back in 2009. (When I was in Tucson, Therese Anne Fowler was telling me how much she loves this event.) The 10th Annual Festival will take place on May 18th, and Denise will report back to us about her experiences there. Many thanks to Denise for coordinating this interview!
If you are a book group leader in the New York tri-state area who is a big fan of audiobooks, can you drop me an email with the subject line “Book Group Audiobook Listener”? A colleague is working on a panel for a conference, and she would “love to talk to someone who integrates audio into their book club discussions.”
As promised, we’ve now opened up registration for our 8th Annual Book Group Speed Dating Event, which will take place on Friday, May 31st from 1pm to 2:50pm at Book Expo in New York. Representatives from more than a dozen publishers will be there to talk about various selections from their fall/winter lists in a speed-dating format. A number of galleys will be available to give away, and ideas for enhancing book group discussions will be shared. To register, all you have to do is fill out this form by Monday, May 20th at noon ET, but please note that you have to be registered for Book Expo in order to attend. Read on for more details later in this newsletter. If you are not attending Book Expo, do keep in mind that, as always, we will share these presentations after the event.
There was an error in the last newsletter, something that we rarely do. The event for Martha Hall Kelly at the Bellamy-Ferriday House in Connecticut will NOT take place on April 13th; it has been rescheduled for a day in June. We will share more details as soon as they become available. However, the "Special Evening with Martha Hall Kelly" that Random House is hosting in their New York City offices WILL still happen on Tuesday, April 9th. Click here for more info and to purchase tickets.
We’re excited to announce a BIG contest for the audiobook edition of THE MOMENT OF LIFT: How Empowering Women Changes the World, which releases on April 23rd.
For the last 20 years, Melinda Gates (co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down. In THE MOMENT OF LIFT, Melinda shares lessons she’s learned from the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage.
We’re giving 10 book groups the chance to win six digital copies of the audiobook, which is read by Melinda, and share their comments on it. We also are awarding 40 listeners a physical copy of the audiobook. All the contest details can be found here, and the deadline for your entries is Wednesday, April 3rd at noon ET. We’ll be adding the discussion guide and sharing a link to an audio clip soon! One of my close friends worked with Melinda at the Foundation and thought so highly of her. This is a book that I am looking forward to listening to!
We’re celebrating the recent release of THE HUNTRESS, Kate Quinn’s highly anticipated follow-up to her book club favorite THE ALICE NETWORK, with a special contest that will give three readers the opportunity to win 12 copies of the book for their group. To enter, please fill out this form by Wednesday, April 3rd at noon ET.
Here’s a quick plot summary: When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, Nina Markova risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment. When she is stranded behind enemy lines, Nina becomes the prey of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress. Transformed by the horrors he witnessed, British war correspondent Ian Graham has become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a vicious predator known as the Huntress. To find her, the fierce, disciplined investigator joins forces with the only witness to escape the Huntress alive: the brazen, cocksure Nina. But a shared secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.
I'm reading THE HUNTRESS now, and I had the pleasure of hearing Kate talk about it in Tucson (as well as at an earlier Book Club Girl event in New York). It’s so, so good! Check out the discussion guide here and our review on Bookreporter.com here.
Our latest “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest title is SOLD ON A MONDAY by Kristina McMorris, a New York Times bestseller that’s still going strong since its August release.
2 CHILDREN FOR SALE. The scrawled sign, peddling young siblings on a farmhouse porch, captures the desperation sweeping the country in 1931. It's an era of breadlines, bank runs and impossible choices. For struggling reporter Ellis Reed, the gut-wrenching scene evokes memories of his family's dark past. He snaps a photograph of the children, not meant for publication. But when the image leads to his big break, the consequences are devastating in ways he never imagined. Haunted by secrets of her own, secretary Lillian Palmer sees more in the picture than a good story and is soon drawn into the fray. Together, the two set out to right a wrongdoing and mend a fractured family, at the risk of everything they value.
We’re giving three groups the chance to win 12 copies of the book; to enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, April 3rd at noon ET. Be sure to check out the discussion guide here. I had the pleasure of hearing Kristina talk about SOLD ON A MONDAY at a luncheon last October, and I caught up with her when I was in Tucson. Talking to her, I enjoyed hearing the great feedback that readers have been giving her about the book.
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: EDUCATED: A Memoir by Tara Westover, WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING by Delia Owens, THE GREAT ALONE by Kristin Hannah, BEFORE WE WERE YOURS by Lisa Wingate, and GIRL WAITS WITH GUN: A Kopp Sisters Novel by Amy Stewart. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
This month, we’re featuring the guide for Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest novel, DAISY JONES & THE SIX, which is March’s Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick, a #1 Indie Next pick, a Book of the Month Club top selection, and one of my Bookreporter.com Bets On titles. Here’s what Reese has to say about it: “[I]t ROCKS. Literally. The book centers on the meteoric rise of a rock band in the ‘70s and its lead singers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, whose connection is as electric as the music they make together. It’s sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll, people!!... And the very best part?! Hello Sunshine is turning this into a TV show with Amazon Studios… so stay tuned for more updates!” Click here for the guide, here for our Bookreporter.com review, and here for my Bets On commentary.
I HAVE to get my hands on the audiobook; my friend Heather wrote the other day and said it’s amazing. The book is written in a unique style, with each character chronicling the story without the typical dialogue style of “he said”/“she said.” I got into it from page one and loved it!
Additional guides for this month include Lisa See’s latest novel, THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN, which introduces readers to the fierce and unforgettable female divers of Jeju Island and the dramatic history that shaped their lives (don't miss our Bookreporter.com review and my Bets On commentary); AMERICAN DUCHESS, in which Karen Harper tells the tale of Consuelo Vanderbilt, her “The Wedding of the Century” to the Duke of Marlborough, and her quest to find meaning behind “the glitter and the gold”; and THE QUINTLAND SISTERS, a historical novel from Shelley Wood that tells the story of the Dionne Quintuplets, the world's first identical quintuplets to survive birth
I was so happy to hear that Lisa's book is March’s Barnes & Noble Book Club selection. Barnes & Noble will be selling a special Exclusive Book Club Edition of THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN, in addition to hosting a free Book Club Night to discuss the novel, in stores across the country on Tuesday, April 9th at 7pm local time. Click here to sign up for the event.
And just as Lisa had Chinese tea for her readers to share with their book groups for THE TEA GIRL OF HUMMINGBIRD LANE, for THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN, she has Korean tea and cakes to indulge in. On her website, she also has an extensive section that includes her research for the book, which you can find here. You will want to check this out after you read the book. To me, this is the same as when I googled "foot binding" after reading SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN. I knew so little about Korea before exploring this book --- and wondering why this has not been further mined in fiction. Lisa’s extensive notes in the back of the book about her research are terrific and show her attention to detail!
Melanie, who edits our Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio features on Bookreporter.com, attended the B&N event for Tara Conklin’s THE LAST ROMANTICS last Tuesday night in Boynton Beach, Florida, and had this to say about it:
"Susan did a great job leading our discussion on many themes: secrets, mental illness, consequences of our choices, and different forms of love. It was a group of about 25 people, two men this time! Unlike the other discussions I had attended at B&N in the past, rather than revealing the next book club selection at the end of the discussion, as we walked in, Lisa See's THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN was displayed on a table as the next book club choice! I was so excited as Lisa is one of my absolute favorite authors. Alongside the display were Lisa's other books, all of which I have greatly enjoyed in the past. I made sure to tell as many people present as I could about what a wonderful writer Lisa is and how great ALL her books are! I couldn't believe many had not read her before --- I am sure they are in for a treat, and I look forward to reading THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN, which coincidentally was also chosen as my personal book club's selection for the month of April!"
Last week, "Today" announced a new monthly Book Club with Jenna Bush Hager called #ReadWithJenna. Their first selection is THE LAST ROMANTICS, which also was a Bets On pick.
How often do you use Goodreads to help make decisions on what to read with your group? That’s our latest poll question; let us know what you do by clicking here.
In our previous poll, we wanted to know which recently released paperbacks you have read, or are planning to read, with your group. Here are your top five picks: AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE by Tayari Jones (45%), THE IMMORTALISTS by Chloe Benjamin (34%), EVERY NOTE PLAYED by Lisa Genova (32%), THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT by Chris Bohjalian (32%), and LOVE AND RUIN by Paula McLain (28%). Click here for all the results.
As we mentioned in the last newsletter, the newly released ME FOR YOU by Lolly Winston is this month’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites program. S&S will host a Facebook Live Book Club chat about the book on Thursday, March 28th at 5pm ET. We encourage you to join the conversation with your comments about the book and interact with your fellow readers.
S&S is also hosting a sweepstakes where one winner will be awarded 12 copies of ME FOR YOU for their book group. Be sure to enter by 11:59pm ET on Sunday, March 31st. Click here for all the details.
Please keep in mind all the features we currently have running on Bookreporter.com, including a special contest for the aforementioned LOST ROSES by Martha Hall Kelly, our Spring Preview feature (these 24-hour giveaways kick off on Tuesday, March 19th at noon ET), our New in Paperback roundups for March, and, of course, our aforementioned Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio contests. More details on all of these features can be found later in this newsletter.
As you can see, there's lots to read and talk about with your book groups. My Long Hill Book Group’s next selection is AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE; my neighborhood book group is reading GHOSTED. I missed the latter’s latest meeting where they discussed WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING, as I was just back from Tucson.
Here’s to your book group having a great discussion this month.

THE MOMENT OF LIFT: How Empowering Women Changes the World (Audiobook) written and read by Melinda Gates (Social Science/Women's Studies)
For the last 20 years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down.
In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares lessons she’s learned from the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, “That is why I had to write this book --- to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.”
Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention --- from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world ---- and ourselves.
Writing with emotion, candor and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another.
When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.

SOLD ON A MONDAY by Kristina McMorris (Historical Fiction)
2 CHILDREN FOR SALE
The sign is a last resort. It sits on a farmhouse porch in 1931, but could be found anywhere in an era of breadlines, bank runs and broken dreams. It could have been written by any mother facing impossible choices.
For struggling reporter Ellis Reed, the gut-wrenching scene evokes memories of his family’s dark past. He snaps a photograph of the children, not meant for publication. But when it leads to his big break, the consequences are more devastating than he ever imagined.
At the paper, Lillian Palmer is haunted by her role in all that happened. She is far too familiar with the heartbreak of children deemed unwanted. As the bonds of motherhood are tested, she and Ellis must decide how much they are willing to risk to mend a fractured family.
Inspired by an actual newspaper photograph that stunned the nation, SOLD ON A MONDAY is a powerful novel of love, redemption and the unexpected paths that bring us home.

DAISY JONES & THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid
March’s Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine
Book Club Pick and a Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
DAISY JONES & THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Fiction)
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.
Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.
Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.
The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the '70s. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with DAISY JONES & THE SIX, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

New Guide: THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN by Lisa See
March’s Barnes & Noble Book Club Selection
and a Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN by Lisa See (Historical Fiction)
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger.
Despite their love for each other, Mi-ja and Young-sook’s differences are impossible to ignore. THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN is an epoch set over many decades, beginning during a period of Japanese colonialism in the 1930s and 1940s, followed by World War II, the Korean War and its aftermath, through the era of cell phones and wet suits for the women divers. Throughout this time, the residents of Jeju find themselves caught between warring empires. Mi-ja is the daughter of a Japanese collaborator, and she will forever be marked by this association. Young-sook was born into a long line of haenyeo and will inherit her mother’s position leading the divers in their village. Little do the two friends know that after surviving hundreds of dives and developing the closest of bonds, forces outside their control will push their friendship to the breaking point.
This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous physical work, and the men take care of the children. A classic Lisa See story --- one of women’s friendships and the larger forces that shape them --- THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN introduces readers to the fierce and unforgettable female divers of Jeju Island and the dramatic history that shaped their lives.
