Carol's newly formed neighborhood book group had a wonderful time chatting with Lisa See via Skype.
One of Carol's group members, Mary Ann, prepared some Asian-themed
refreshments for their discussion of THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN.
Melanie, who edits our Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio features on Bookreporter.com, shared this photo of her group having a Skype chat with Lisa See.
On Thursday, May 23rd at 5pm ET, members of the Simon & Schuster team will host a
Facebook Live Book Club chat to discuss DEAR MRS. BIRD by AJ Pearce,
May's pick for S&S's Book Club Favorites program.
Sharing Some Great Books with You This Month
In the last two newsletters, I wrote about Skyping with authors. My newly formed neighborhood book group spoke with Lisa See via Skype on Wednesday night about THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN, and Melanie, who lives in Florida and edits our Word of Mouth and Sounding Off on Audio features on Bookreporter.com, also had a Skype chat with Lisa that she and her book group enjoyed immensely. I have been to many events where Lisa has presented through the years, but there was something very special and intimate about this evening where she shared feedback on both her research and writing process. I loved seeing how my fellow book group members asked smart questions that sparked lots of conversation. While we had explored the videos on Lisa’s website, this discussion really broadened our experience. It was such an informative evening.
We met for a bit before dialing into Lisa, and our host, Mary Ann, prepared a number of Asian-themed refreshments for the discussion. Melanie’s group also was wowed by their discussion with Lisa; she wrote as soon as it was over, and I could feel her excitement in her text. Melanie kindly contributed to our GoFundMe campaign in honor of Lisa joining the Newport Bay Club’s discussion. It really was a nice surprise to see that. Above you can see photos of both of our groups and some of the refreshments served at my book club.
A reminder that we would love to hear about your experiences Skyping or chatting with authors. Send us photos and share details. It would be fun to “see” more groups in action. While we write to you and “picture you,” it would be great to have some photos of you and your group!
Now to this early month update where we have lots to share.
I am so excited that we just kicked off a special contest for THE GUEST BOOK by Sarah Blake, which is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club selection. You may remember that Sarah’s 2010 novel, THE POSTMISTRESS, was a New York Times bestseller and a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. While Kitty Milton and her husband, Ogden, summer on their island in Maine, anchored as they are to the way things have always been, the winds of change are beginning to stir. In 1959 New York City, two strangers enter the Miltons’ circle. One captures the attention of Kitty’s daughter, while the other makes each of them question what the family stands for. This new generation insists the times are changing. And in one night, everything does. So much so that in the present day, the third generation of Miltons doesn’t have enough money to keep the island in Maine.
We’re giving three readers the opportunity to win 12 copies of THE GUEST BOOK for their group. To enter, all you have to do is fill out this form by Thursday, June 6th at noon ET. In the meantime, be sure to check out the discussion guide, along with our review of the book and interview with Sarah on Bookreporter.com. My Bets On commentary will appear in the May 17th Bookreporter.com Weekly Update newsletter.
Barnes & Noble will be selling a special Exclusive Book Club Edition of THE GUEST BOOK, in addition to hosting a free Book Club Night to discuss it, in stores across the country on Tuesday, June 11th at 7pm local time. Click here to sign up for the event.
I have been eagerly anticipating this book’s publication as I read it early and have been raving about it. BOTH of the book groups that I belong to are reading THE GUEST BOOK, and I am looking forward to discussing it with them. My mom wrote to share this after reading it: ”Should bring great areas for discussion to any book group.” I do agree!
Our latest “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest title is LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng, which came out in paperback this week and was a Bets On title. Everything is planned in Shaker Heights, a progressive suburb of Cleveland, and no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson. Mia Warren comes to town with her teenage daughter and rents a house from the Richardsons. But Mia carries a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this community. When family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that divides the town. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at a shocking and devastating price.
Three groups will win 12 copies of the book; to enter, please fill out the form on this page by Thursday, June 6th at noon ET. In the meantime, don’t miss the discussion guide, our Bookreporter.com review and my Bets On commentary. LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE will be adapted into an eight-episode series on Hulu starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. No official release date has been announced yet.
In our previous “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, here are the five books mentioned most frequently as titles that our book groups read: WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING by Delia Owens, EDUCATED: A Memoir by Tara Westover, BEFORE WE WERE YOURS by Lisa Wingate, ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE by Gail Honeyman, and THE GREAT ALONE by Kristin Hannah. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
This is your last newsletter reminder to enter our very special contest for William Kent Krueger’s upcoming work of historical fiction, THIS TENDER LAND, which releases on September 3rd and will be a Bets On selection. I LOVE this book! For those of you who remember Kent's bestseller, ORDINARY GRACE, this one is just as special. This week I saw a number of bookseller raves for THIS TENDER LAND; it's wonderful seeing such universally terrific praise. We’re giving 10 book groups the chance to win up to 10 advance copies of the book, provided that they can give us their feedback on it by Friday, August 16th. The deadline for your entries is Wednesday, May 15th at noon ET, so be sure to fill out this form before then.
We’ve added three more guides to this update: THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK, Kim Michele Richardson’s new novel inspired by the brave women of the Pack Horse Library Project, in which a young outcast braves the hardships of Kentucky’s Great Depression and brings truly magical objects to her people --- books; Chip Cheek’s debut novel, CAPE MAY, which explores the social and sexual mores of 1950s America through the eyes of a newly married couple from the genteel south corrupted by sophisticated New England urbanites; and THE WONDER OF LOST CAUSES by Nick Trout, in which a single mom and her chronically ill child receive a valuable lesson from an unlikely source --- a very special dog who unexpectedly enters their lives (this book will appeal especially to fans of AN UNEXPECTED GRACE and A DOG’S WAY HOME).
In what year was the book that you’re currently reading with your book group published? That’s our latest poll question. Click here to cast your vote.
Our previous poll asked which of 13 notable books that have recently released you have read or are planning to read with your group. The aforementioned WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING was the overwhelming favorite with 75%(!) of the vote, followed by the aforementioned THE ISLAND OF SEA WOMEN (40%), BECOMING by Michelle Obama (35%), THE LIBRARY BOOK by Susan Orlean (33%), and LOST ROSES by Martha Hall Kelly (32%). Click here for all the results.
Don’t miss our Mother’s Day Author Blog series on Bookreporter.com, which we’ve brought back for a 10th(!) year. Once again, we’re sharing pieces from authors who reminisce about reading books with their moms, or with their own children, and talk about how their moms influenced them to become readers and writers. This year’s contributors are Melanie Benjamin, Sarah Blake, Armando Lucas Correa, Chris Pavone, Kaira Rouda, Wendy Wax and Kate White --- all of whom have new books coming out this month.
Our Bookreporter.com Summer Reading giveaways kick off this Tuesday, May 14th at noon ET. On select days through August 23rd, we will host a series of 24-hour contests and on each of the contest days award five readers a book that we think is a great summer read. You will have to check the site each day to see the featured prize book and enter to win. We also will send a special newsletter to announce the day's title, which you can sign up for here.
FROM SCRATCH: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home, by Tembi Locke, is May’s Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick. Here’s what Reese has to say about it: “This beautiful memoir takes us on Tembi’s personal journey of love, parenthood, and ultimately the loss of her husband, Saro. She learns to heal in the most beautiful way --- through the support of three generations of women --- and yes, there’s Italian food. Lots and lots of Italian food! I can’t wait for you to fall in love with this book the way I did.”
May's pick for the new "Today" book club, #ReadWithJenna, is A WOMAN IS NO MAN by Etaf Rum. Click here for Jenna Bush Hager's thoughts on this poignant novel and why she couldn’t put it down. By the way, Jenna's selection of this book propelled it to hit the New York Times bestseller list.
The PBS NewsHour-New York Times “Now Read This” book club has named AN ODYSSEY: A Father, a Son, and an Epic by Daniel Mendelsohn as its May selection.
As we announced in the late April newsletter, DEAR MRS. BIRD by AJ Pearce is this month’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites program. New Special Contest: Enter to Win 12 Copies of THE GUEST BOOK by Sarah Blake for Your Group
This Month's Barnes & Noble Book Club Selection
and an Upcoming Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
Moving through three generations and back and forth in time, THE GUEST BOOK tells the story of a family and a country that buries its past in quiet, until the present calls forth a reckoning. We are celebrating the release of Sarah Blake's triumphant new novel --- following 2010's THE POSTMISTRESS --- with a special contest that will give three groups the chance to win 12 copies of the book. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, June 6th at noon ET.
THE GUEST BOOK by Sarah Blake (Fiction)
No. It is a simple word, uttered on a summer porch in 1936. And it will haunt Kitty Milton for the rest of her life. Kitty and her husband, Ogden, are both from families considered the backbone of the country. But this refusal will come to be Kitty’s defining moment, and its consequences will ripple through the Milton family for generations. For while they summer on their island in Maine, anchored as they are to the way things have always been, the winds of change are beginning to stir.
Evie Milton’s mother has just died, and as Evie digs into her mother’s and grandparents’ history, what she finds is a story as unsettling as it is inescapable, the story that threatens the foundation of the Milton family myth.

THIS TENDER LAND by William Kent Krueger (Historical Fiction)
1932, Minnesota. The Lincoln School is a pitiless place where hundreds of Native American children, forcibly separated from their parents, are sent to be educated. It is also home to an orphan named Odie O’Banion, a lively boy whose exploits earn him the superintendent’s wrath. Forced to flee, he and his brother Albert, their best friend Mose, and a brokenhearted little girl named Emmy steal away in a canoe, heading for the mighty Mississippi and a place to call their own.
Over the course of one unforgettable summer, these four orphans will journey into the unknown and cross paths with others who are adrift, from struggling farmers and traveling faith healers to displaced families and lost souls of all kinds. With the feel of a modern classic, THIS TENDER LAND is an enthralling, big-hearted epic that shows how the magnificent American landscape connects us all, haunts our dreams and makes us whole.

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE by Celeste Ng (Fiction)
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned --- from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.
Enter Mia Warren --- an enigmatic artist and single mother --- who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community.
When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town --- and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her motives, Elena is determined to uncover the secrets in Mia's past. But her obsession will come at unexpected and devastating costs.

New Guide: THE BOOK WOMAN OF
TROUBLESOME CREEK by Kim Michele Richardson
THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK by Kim Michele Richardson (Historical Fiction)
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything --- everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome has its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter.
Cussy's not only a book woman, however; she’s also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she’s going to have to confront prejudice as old as the Appalachias and suspicion as deep as the holler.

Recent Bookreporter.com Bets On Selections:
NANAVILLE Audiobook and THE MOTHER-IN-LAW
NANAVILLE: Adventures in Grandparenting (Audiobook) written by Anna Quindlen, read by Cynthia Farrell (Memoir)
In NANAVILLE: Adventures in Grandparenting, her honest and oft-times wry memoir, Anna Quindlen talks about being the grandmother to her first grandchild, Arthur. She nails the role of grandparents in a child’s life and offers thoughtful and telling observations about it, as she is no longer mother and decision-maker but secondary character and support to the parents of her grandson. She writes, ‘Where I once led, I have to learn to follow.’ Eventually a close friend provides words to live by: ‘Did they ask you?’”
I listened to NANAVILLE, and Cynthia Farrell is a wonderful narrator. Her manner of narrating felt so personal that for a long while I thought it was Anna reading the book. It sounded like she knew Arthur and had bonded with him! This is the book that I am going to give every new grandmother. Seriously.

THE MOTHER-IN-LAW by Sally Hepworth (Psychological Thriller/Mystery)
If you have been reading this website and my Bets On selections for the last few years, you will know that I am a huge fan of Sally Hepworth, an Australian author who writes wonderful thrillers that revolve around home and family. In the first chapter of her latest, THE MOTHER-IN-LAW, we learn that Lucy’s mother-in-law, Diana, is dead. From there, we unpeel the layers of how she died, with the plot twisting this way and that, and lots of finger-pointing from the family.
When they first meet, Lucy is ready to impress Diana. She makes a few missteps but knows how much her boyfriend, Ollie, adores his mother and is determined that she will win Diana over. Diana is very much in charge and is tough to crack. Her work includes helping women who have arrived in Australia as refugees, and she toils tirelessly at helping them assimilate. She’s also stellar at entertaining and managing her home life. Lucy realizes that winning her over is going to be tougher than she planned. Tom, Ollie’s dad who made their family fortune, loves Lucy, but Diana remains cold.
