Last Wednesday night, Carol and her friend, Beverley, went to see Marjan Kamali at the Strand bookstore, where she was interviewed about THE STATIONERY SHOP by Mary Beth Keane,
the author of ASK AGAIN, YES. Pictured above are Marjan (left) and Mary Beth (right).
Six groups who won copies of AMERICAN DIRT in our special contest and shared
their comments about the book also submitted photos, which you can see above.
First row: Class of 2016 Mom’s Book Club, Read Between the Wines
Second row: Feckin’ Book Club, High Society Ladies
Third row: Boulevard Book Group, Wine & Worms
This week, Carol and her Long Hill Book Club discussed SAVE ME THE PLUMS by Ruth Reichl.
Four members prepared five dishes from the book.
First row: Gina Marie’s Cheddar Scallion Biscuits, Spicy Chinese Noodles
Second row: Thanksgiving Turkey Chili
Third row: German Apple Pancakes, Jeweled Chocolate Cake
When my Long Hill Book Club met this week, we discussed Ruth Reichl’s SAVE ME THE PLUMS. There are five recipes in the book, and we had four members who took on the cooking --- German Apple Pancakes, Spicy Chinese Noodles, Gina Marie’s Cheddar Scallion Biscuits, Thanksgiving Turkey Chili and Jeweled Chocolate Cake. You can find some of the recipes here.
I confess that we chatted more about the food than we did about the actual text of the book, though we did talk about the complexity of the recipes, as well as the role of an editor at a magazine. A few of us talked about how emotional we were when Ruth described 9/11. And we all loved the way she emptied the wine cellar at the magazine and gathered her staff at her home for a mourning party when Gourmet’s closing was announced. I appreciated that bold move. A number of us listened to the book on audio and loved Ruth’s narration.
Then, coincidentally I saw a Facebook post from my friend, Kim. She just moved to Santa Fe and was having her first book club meeting. And what did she make for her first meeting? Ruth Reichl’s aforementioned Jeweled Chocolate Cake. Oh, and they discussed FEAST YOUR EYES by Myla Goldberg. And she shared, “Big thumbs up...oh, on the book, too!”
We continue to share with you the amazing comments about AMERICAN DIRT that we received from book clubs who won copies of the book in our special contest. We now have heard from all 10 of our winning groups! Above you can see photos of SIX of them. Many thanks to all who took the time to give us such wonderful feedback.
A reminder that Barnes & Noble will be hosting a free Book Club Night in stores across the country to discuss AMERICAN DIRT on Tuesday, March 10th at 7pm local time. If you’d like to attend, please sign up here. And don’t forget that next Friday, March 6th, Oprah will talk to author Jeanine Cummins about the book and the controversy surrounding it on the next episode of her Apple TV+ series, “Oprah’s Book Club”. According to Oprah, the purpose of this conversation is to “bring people together from all sides to talk about this book, and who gets to publish what stories. I’m hoping that this is going to resonate with many of you and your concerns.” Also, here is a piece that refutes some of the controversy.
Our two contests that launched earlier this month will be wrapping up soon --- Wednesday, March 4th at noon ET --- so the time to enter is now!
Three groups will win 12 copies of THE STATIONERY SHOP by Marjan Kamali, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now in paperback. Roya is a dreamy, idealistic teenager who finds a literary oasis in kindly Mr. Fakhri’s neighborhood book and stationery shop. When Mr. Fakhri introduces Roya to Bahman, who has a burning passion for justice and a love for Rumi’s poetry, she loses her heart at once. A few months later, on the eve of their marriage, Roya agrees to meet Bahman at the town square, but violence suddenly erupts. In the chaos, Bahman never shows. More than 60 years later, an accident of fate leads Roya back to Bahman and offers her a chance to ask him the questions that have haunted her for more than half a century.
Last Wednesday night, I attended an event at the Strand bookstore with my friend, Beverley. Mary Beth Keane, the author of ASK AGAIN, YES, interviewed Marjan about THE STATIONERY SHOP. Marjan and Mary Beth were guests on our “Bookreporter Talks To” series, so this made the evening extra special for me. There were a number of audience members who had read the book and were excited to be able to talk to Marjan about it, which was so lovely to see.
Earlier that day, Marjan joined two members of the Simon & Schuster team for a Facebook Live Book Club chat to talk about THE STATIONERY SHOP. Click here for their lively discussion, and be sure to check out the comments section on Facebook to see what your fellow readers thought about the book. It was announced at the end of the conversation that March’s pick for their Book Club Favorites program will be THE WINEMAKER’S WIFE by Kristin Harmel, which releases in paperback on March 17th.
In our latest “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, three groups will be awarded 12 copies of DAISY JONES & THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid, another Bets On title that is newly released in paperback. Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late '60s. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed. Also receiving a lot of attention is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road. Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together.
My Long Hill Book Club will be discussing DAISY JONES & THE SIX next month. I will be flying back from the Tucson Festival of Books, so sadly I am going to miss the discussion.
We are featuring guides for two more Bets On selections: Alexis Schaitkin’s debut novel, SAINT X, a haunting portrait of grief, obsession, and the bond between two sisters never truly given the chance to know one another; and THE OTHER MRS., a new psychological thriller from Mary Kubica that Netflix will be adapting into a feature film (we will share all the details with you as soon as they become available). I had a wonderful time talking to Alexis about SAINT X for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview; click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Be sure to watch to the end to see the treat that I shared with Alexis.
We also have added guides for two books that released in paperback this month: NORMAL PEOPLE, Sally Rooney’s New York Times bestseller that was named one of the Ten Best Books of 2019 by Entertainment Weekly, People and the New York Public Library --- and is soon to be a series on Hulu; and WINDOW ON THE BAY by Debbie Macomber, a heartwarming novel about a single mother who becomes an empty nester and decides to spread her wings to rediscover herself --- and her passions.
My Bets On commentary is now available for THE QUEEN’S FORTUNE: A Novel of Desiree, Napoleon, and the Dynasty That Outlasted the Empire by Allison Pataki, for which we featured the guide in the last newsletter. And in case you missed my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Allison, you can watch the video here and listen to the podcast here.
Speaking of podcasts, once again we’d like to bring to your attention Will Schwalbe's outstanding podcast, “But That’s Another Story”, where he talks to notable guests from various walks of life about the books that shaped them. Read all about the podcast and how you can listen to it later in this newsletter.
My neighborhood book group is reading LONG BRIGHT RIVER by Liz Moore. I look forward to seeing what your group is reading this month. Share here!
Have a great discussion, and we will be back to you the second week in March.

THE STATIONERY SHOP by Marjan Kamali (Fiction)
Roya, a dreamy, idealistic teenager living amid the political upheaval of 1953 Tehran, finds a literary oasis in kindly Mr. Fakhri’s neighborhood stationery shop, stocked with books and pens and bottles of jewel-colored ink.
Then Mr. Fakhri, with a keen instinct for a budding romance, introduces Roya to his other favorite customer --- handsome Bahman, who has a burning passion for justice and a love for Rumi’s poetry --- and she loses her heart at once. Their romance blossoms, and the little stationery shop remains their favorite place in all of Tehran.
A few short months later, on the eve of their marriage, Roya agrees to meet Bahman at the town square when violence erupts --- a result of the coup d’etat that forever changes their country’s future. In the chaos, Bahman never shows. For weeks, Roya tries desperately to contact him, but her efforts are fruitless. With a sorrowful heart, she moves on --- to college in California, to another man, to a life in New England --- until, more than 60 years later, an accident of fate leads her back to Bahman and offers her a chance to ask him the questions that have haunted her for more than half a century: Why did you leave? Where did you go? How is it that you were able to forget me?

DAISY JONES & THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Fiction)
Everyone knows Daisy Jones & The Six, but nobody knows the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity...until now.
Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.
Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.
Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.
The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the '70s. Taylor Jenkins Reid is a talented writer who takes her work to a new level with DAISY JONES & THE SIX, brilliantly capturing a place and time in an utterly distinctive voice.

SAINT X by Alexis Schaitkin (Psychological Thriller)
Claire is only seven years old when her college-age sister, Alison, disappears on the last night of their family vacation at a resort on the Caribbean island of Saint X. Several days later, Alison’s body is found in a remote spot on a nearby cay, and two local men --- employees at the resort --- are arrested. But the evidence is slim, the timeline against it, and the men are soon released. The story turns into national tabloid news, a lurid mystery that will go unsolved. For Claire and her parents, there is only the return home to broken lives.
Years later, Claire is living and working in New York City when a brief but fateful encounter brings her together with Clive Richardson, one of the men originally suspected of murdering her sister. It is a moment that sets Claire on an obsessive pursuit of the truth --- not only to find out what happened the night of Alison’s death but also to answer the elusive question: Who exactly was her sister? At seven, Claire had been barely old enough to know her: a beautiful, changeable, provocative girl of 18 at a turbulent moment of identity formation.
As Claire doggedly shadows Clive, hoping to gain his trust, waiting for the slip that will reveal the truth, an unlikely attachment develops between them, two people whose lives were forever marked by the same tragedy.
For readers of Emma Cline’s THE GIRLS and Lauren Groff’s FATES AND FURIES, SAINT X is a flawlessly drawn and deeply moving story that culminates in an emotionally powerful ending.

Featured Guide: MERCY HOUSE by Alena Dillon
MERCY HOUSE by Alena Dillon (Fiction)
She would stop at nothing to protect the women under her care.
Inside a century-old row house in Brooklyn, renegade Sister Evelyn and her fellow nuns preside over a safe haven for the abused and abandoned. Gruff and indomitable on the surface, warm and wry underneath, little daunts Evelyn, until she receives word that Mercy House will be investigated by Bishop Hawkins, a man with whom she shares a dark history. In order to protect everything they’ve built, the nuns must conceal many of their methods, which are forbidden by the Catholic Church.
Evelyn will go to great lengths to defend all that she loves. She confronts a gang member, defies the church, challenges her own beliefs and faces her past. She is bolstered by the other nuns and the vibrant, diverse residents of the shelter --- Lucia, Mei-Li, Desiree, Esther and Katrina --- whose differences are outweighed by what unites them: they’ve all been broken by men but are determined to rebuild.
Amidst her fight, Evelyn discovers the extraordinary power of mercy and the grace it grants, not just to those who receive it, but to those strong enough to bestow it.

Bookreporter.com Bets On:
THE QUEEN’S FORTUNE by Allison Pataki
THE QUEEN'S FORTUNE: A Novel of Desiree, Napoleon, and the Dynasty That Outlasted the Empire by Allison Pataki (Historical Fiction)
I confess that I never thought I would love a book where the protagonist was the one-time lover of Napoleon, who went on to become the queen of Sweden. I never hearkened to this particular time period, perhaps due to too many quizzes and tests in high school and college that made history into a series of facts, and not a lot of fun. Well, those attitudes rapidly changed after reading THE QUEEN’S FORTUNE; I was equally impressed with Allison Pataki’s eye for detail as I was with her beautiful prose. She had me completely caught up in the story of Desiree Clary --- and the crazy world that surrounded Napoleon.
While Napoleon was out pillaging and plundering his way across what we now know as Europe, he also was intent on a parallel goal --- an heir. To him, the world he amassed would only matter if he had someone to leave it to. Desiree is witness to both sides of Napoleon: the conqueror and the person who desires a legacy. Early on, she is swept aside for a much older woman, one who brings with her a tangled history of men, but does not bear him a child.
Meanwhile, Desiree marries Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who is a rival and a foe to Napoleon. Through him, she has a front-row seat to what Napoleon builds…and destroys --- both the cities and the relationships in his life. When she is sent to Sweden to live with Bernadotte, she will escape the cunning, wrath and irrationality of Napoleon and find herself in a world where she and her family can thrive --- a place where her influence can be seen even today through the dynasty that was created during her time.
The details are positively cinematic, and the writing is powerful. Book clubs would have a great discussion about it.
