Last Thursday night, we hosted our second “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event with William Kent Krueger as our guest. It was such a fun evening as we discussed THIS TENDER LAND in depth. Four readers joined us "on stage" to ask questions as well. Though I have interviewed Kent about this book before, and we have had a number of conversations over the past few years, I still learned so much about him and his work during this event. Click here to watch the event and here to listen to the podcast. By the way, immediately after the event, my mailbox lit up with notes from viewers. And they are still coming in! We had our biggest crowd ever at this event.

Our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest will be Kim Michele Richardson, the author of THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK. We selected this book for discussion as it has been a top pick for many months in the “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” feature. The event will take place on Thursday, March 25th at 8pm ET. Click here to sign up. If you would like to be one of our featured audience guests and ask Kim Michele a question on camera, please send me an email with the subject line “Question for Kim Michele.”

As promised, our Most Requested Guides of 2020 is now available. We pulled together the 30 guides that were accessed the most by you last year. Your top five picks are AMERICAN DIRT by Jeanine Cummins (no surprise there), THE DUTCH HOUSE by Ann Patchett (this month’s Target Book Club Pick), THE GIVER OF STARS by Jojo Moyes, THE WATER DANCER by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and A LONG PETAL OF THE SEA by Isabel Allende. We always love seeing which guides appealed to you the most!
If you haven’t entered our contest for Kristin Hannah’s aforementioned new novel, THE FOUR WINDS (a future Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that releases this Tuesday, February 2nd), may we suggest you do so now? We are awarding 12 digital copies of the audiobook, narrated by Julia Whelan, to 30 book groups who would like to listen to it and share their comments on it.
Here’s the plot: Texas, 1921. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. By 1934, millions are out of work, and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive. In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa --- like so many of her neighbors --- must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves, or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.
To enter this BIG contest, please fill out this form by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET. As a special bonus, the audiobook includes a conversation between Kristin and Julia. Click here to listen to a short clip of their discussion, and an excerpt from the audiobook can be found here. We also have added the discussion guide, which includes a few questions specifically related to the audiobook. I look forward to catching up with Kristin soon for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview!
As we mentioned in the last newsletter, Netflix is adapting Kristin’s 2008 novel, FIREFLY LANE, as a television series. The 10-episode first season will debut this Wednesday, February 3rd, just one day after the release of THE FOUR WINDS. Click here for the latest trailer and here to add it to your Netflix watch list. What a whirlwind two days it will be for Kristin!
This also is your last newsletter reminder to enter our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest for THIS TIME NEXT YEAR WE’LL BE LAUGHING by Jacqueline Winspear, which is a Bets On selection. I truly loved this book!
After 16 novels, Winspear has taken the bold step of turning to memoir, revealing the hardships and joys of her family history. Both shockingly frank and deftly restrained, her story tackles the difficult, poignant and fascinating family accounts of three generations --- her grandparents, her parents, and she and her brother. Her childhood was spent picking hops and fruit on farms in rural Kent, capturing her ties to the land and her dream of being a writer at its very inception.
We are giving three groups the opportunity to win 12 copies of the book. To enter, all you have to do is fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, February 3rd at noon ET. Please also check out these links: the guide, our Bookreporter review, my Bets On commentary, and my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Winspear as a video and a podcast.
We are featuring guides for a number of other discussion-worthy books in this late-month newsletter.
First up is Melanie Benjamin’s new historical novel, THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD, which is a Bets On pick. The morning of January 12, 1888, was unusually mild, following a punishing cold spell. It was warm enough for the homesteaders of the Dakota Territory to venture out again, and for their children to return to school without their heavy coats --- leaving them unprepared when disaster struck. At the hour when most prairie schools were letting out for the day, a terrifying, fast-moving blizzard blew in without warning. Schoolteachers as young as 16 were suddenly faced with life and death decisions: Keep the children inside, to risk freezing to death when fuel ran out, or send them home, praying they wouldn’t get lost in the storm. Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter. Also, find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book here, and my interview with Melanie is available as a video and a podcast. I read this week that the book was announced as the 2021 One Book South Dakota.
Readers of this newsletter know that I am a huge fan of Marie Benedict’s historical novels. THE OTHER EINSTEIN, CARNEGIE'S MAID, THE ONLY WOMAN IN THE ROOM and LADY CLEMENTINE were all Bets On selections, and her latest, the aforementioned THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE (this month’s Pennie’s Pick for Costco), is no exception. Here, Marie writes about one of the most notorious events in literary history: Agatha Christie's mysterious 11-day disappearance in 1926. Her husband and daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away. Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter; also, my Bets On commentary can be found here.
Liese O'Halloran Schwarz’s latest novel, WHAT COULD BE SAVED, is yet another Bets On pick. The book takes place during two time periods. In 2019, we meet Laura Preston, an artist who struggles with her sister about family matters and whose mother is dealing with dementia. When a stranger contacts Laura claiming to be her brother, Philip, who disappeared 40 years earlier, she is determined to find out if this is true. The book then pivots to 1972, and the story is told from the perspectives of Laura's parents and the household staff as the children grow up. We see the family living happily, and then Philip disappears before they return to the United States. Be sure to take a look at the guide, our Bookreporter review, and my Bets On commentary. Also, new to this newsletter is my interview with Liese; click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Our other new “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Lisa Gardner, whose latest novel, BEFORE SHE DISAPPEARED, is about an average middle-aged woman who will stop at nothing to find the missing people the rest of the world has forgotten. Lisa talked in-depth about her unique protagonist and some of the challenges she had in researching and writing the modern-day aspects of this stand-alone thriller. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Peter Swanson’s most recent psychological thriller, EIGHT PERFECT MURDERS, is now available in paperback. Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders --- which he titled “Eight Perfect Murders” --- chosen from among the best of the best. But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller who spends almost every night at home reading. A killer is out there, watching his every move --- a diabolical threat who knows way too much about Mal’s personal history. Bookreporter reviewer Ray Palen wrote the guide for this book, which you can take a look at here, along with our review.
We also are continuing to feature the guide for THE LYING LIFE OF ADULTS, Elena Ferrante’s powerful new novel set in a divided Naples, which is soon to be a Netflix series. Bookreporter reviewer Sarah Rachel Egelman calls the book “as intense and ferocious as it is gentle and poignant. Ferrante’s prose is lovely and frank, and her characters are nuanced and real, not always likable. It wrestles with the central question of what it means to be beautiful in all the various senses of the word and will leave readers with much to contemplate and consider.” Click here for the guide and here to read Sarah’s full review.
We have four contests on Bookreporter that we would like to make you aware of: our special contest for OF WOMEN AND SALT by Gabriela Garcia, our Historical Fiction Author Spotlight & Contest for MASQUE OF HONOR by Sharon Virts (both books are impressive debut novels that will be Bets On picks), our Valentine’s Day contest, and our series of 24-hour Winter Reading contests. Scroll further down the newsletter for more details on these exciting giveaways.
YELLOW WIFE by Sadeqa Johnson (an upcoming Bets On title) is February’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites. We will have details about their Facebook Live Book Club chat in our next newsletter. This week, Susie Yang joined the S&S team to talk about WHITE IVY, their January pick. Click here for their discussion. I had a wonderful time chatting with both Sadeqa and Susie for “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews; my conversation with Sadeqa will be up on our YouTube channel early next week.
Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cassandra King Conroy about her book, TELL ME A STORY, a memoir about her life with Pat Conroy, as part of the 2021 International Pulpwood Queens and Timber Guys Book Club Convention Girlfriend Weekend Zoomathon Slumber Party. Losing Pat so young was such a huge loss; I cannot believe it will be five years in March. Cassandra and Pat had a wonderful, albeit too short, life together. I loved her stories about what it meant to be married to another writer.
My Long Hill Book Group met on Monday night, and we discussed HOLLYWOOD PARK by Mikel Jollett. They enjoyed it. I had to leave early for another event, but before I clicked away, we discussed the interview that I had done with Mikel, as well as the structure of his storytelling. A few of them had listened to the audiobook, which Mikel narrated, and they loved it.
As you can see, there is lots happening. Here’s to your book group having a great discussion --- whether virtually or socially distanced!

THE FOUR WINDS (Audiobook) written by Kristin Hannah, read by Julia Whelan (Historical Fiction)
Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. With her reputation in ruin, there is only one respectable choice: marriage to a man she barely knows.
By 1934, the world has changed. Millions are out of work, and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as crops fail, water dries up and the earth cracks open. Dust storms roll relentlessly across the plains.
THE FOUR WINDS is a rich, sweeping novel that stunningly brings to life the Great Depression and the people who lived through it --- the harsh realities that divided us as a nation and the enduring battle between the haves and the have-nots. A testament to hope, resilience and the strength of the human spirit to survive adversity, THE FOUR WINDS is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

THIS TIME NEXT YEAR WE'LL BE LAUGHING: A Memoir by Jacqueline Winspear (Memoir)
After 16 novels, Jacqueline Winspear has taken the bold step of turning to memoir, revealing the hardships and joys of her family history. Both shockingly frank and deftly restrained, her story tackles the difficult, poignant and fascinating family accounts of her paternal grandfather’s shellshock; her mother’s evacuation from London during the Blitz; her soft-spoken animal-loving father’s torturous assignment to an explosives team during WWII; her parents’ years living with Romany Gypsies; and Winspear’s own childhood picking hops and fruit on farms in rural Kent, capturing her ties to the land and her dream of being a writer at its very inception.
An eye-opening and heartfelt portrayal of a post-War England we rarely see, THIS TIME NEXT YEAR WE'LL BE LAUGHING is the story of a childhood in the English countryside, of working class indomitability and family secrets, of artistic inspiration and the price of memory.

THE LYING LIFE OF ADULTS by Elena Ferrante
THE LYING LIFE OF ADULTS written by Elena Ferrante, translated by Ann Goldstein (Fiction)
Giovanna’s pretty face is changing, turning ugly, at least so her father thinks. Giovanna, he says, looks more like her Aunt Vittoria every day. But can it be true? Is she really changing? Is she turning into her Aunt Vittoria, a woman she hardly knows but whom her mother and father clearly despise? Surely there is a mirror somewhere in which she can see herself as she truly is.
Giovanna is searching for her reflection in two kindred cities that fear and detest one another: Naples of the heights, which assumes a mask of refinement, and Naples of the depths, a place of excess and vulgarity. She moves from one to the other in search of the truth, but neither city seems to offer answers or escape.
Named one of 2016’s most influential people by TIME Magazine and frequently touted as a future Nobel Prize winner, Elena Ferrante has become one of the world’s most read and beloved writers. With this new novel about the transition from childhood to adolescence to adulthood, Ferrante proves once again that she deserves her many accolades. In THE LYING LIFE OF ADULTS, readers will discover another gripping, highly addictive and totally unforgettable Neapolitan story.

THE CHILDREN’S BLIZZARD by Melanie Benjamin
A Bookreporter.com Bets On Title
THE CHILDREN'S BLIZZARD by Melanie Benjamin (Historical Fiction)
Based on actual oral histories of survivors, this gripping novel follows the stories of Raina and Gerda Olsen, two sisters, both schoolteachers --- one becomes a hero of the storm and the other finds herself ostracized in the aftermath. It’s also the story of Anette Pedersen, a servant girl whose miraculous survival serves as a turning point in her life and touches the heart of Gavin Woodson, a newspaperman seeking redemption. It was Woodson and others like him who wrote the embellished news stories that lured northern European immigrants across the sea to settle a pitiless land. Boosters needed them to settle territories into states, and they didn’t care what lies they told these families to get them there --- or whose land it originally was.
At its heart, this is a story of courage, of children forced to grow up too soon, tied to the land because of their parents’ choices. It is a story of love taking root in the hard prairie ground, and of families being torn asunder by a ferocious storm that is little remembered today --- because so many of its victims were immigrants to this country.

EIGHT PERFECT MURDERS by Peter Swanson
Now Available in Paperback
EIGHT PERFECT MURDERS by Peter Swanson (Psychological Thriller)
Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack --- which he titled “Eight Perfect Murders” --- chosen from among the best of the best, including Agatha Christie’s A.B.C. MURDERS, Patricia Highsmith’s STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, Ira Levin’s DEATH TRAP, A. A. Milne's RED HOUSE MYSTERY, Anthony Berkeley Cox's MALICE AFORETHOUGHT, James M. Cain's DOUBLE INDEMNITY, John D. Macdonald's THE DROWNER and Donna Tartt's A SECRET HISTORY.
But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller who spends almost every night at home reading. A killer is out there, watching his every move --- a diabolical threat who knows way too much about Mal’s personal history, especially the secrets he’s never told anyone, even his recently deceased wife.
To protect himself, Mal begins looking into possible suspects...and sees a killer in everyone around him. But Mal doesn’t count on the investigation leaving a trail of death in its wake. Suddenly, a series of shocking twists leaves more victims dead --- and the noose around Mal’s neck grows so tight he might never escape.

OF WOMEN AND SALT, Gabriela Garcia's debut novel, is about a daughter's fateful choice, a mother motivated by her own past, and a family legacy that begins in Cuba before either of them were born. The book doesn't release until March 30th, but we're happy to award an advance copy to 25 readers. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 4th at noon ET.
OF WOMEN AND SALT by Gabriela Garcia (Fiction)
In present-day Miami, Jeanette is battling addiction. Daughter of Carmen, a Cuban immigrant, she is determined to learn more about her family history from her reticent mother and makes the snap decision to take in the daughter of a neighbor detained by ICE. Carmen, still wrestling with the trauma of displacement, must process her difficult relationship with her own mother while trying to raise a wayward Jeanette. Steadfast in her quest for understanding, Jeanette travels to Cuba to see her grandmother and reckon with secrets from the past destined to erupt.
From 19th-century cigar factories to present-day detention centers, from Cuba to Mexico, Gabriela Garcia's OF WOMEN AND SALT is a kaleidoscopic portrait of betrayals --- personal and political, self-inflicted and those done by others --- that have shaped the lives of these extraordinary women. A haunting meditation on the choices of mothers, the legacy of the memories they carry, and the tenacity of women who choose to tell their stories despite those who wish to silence them, this is more than a diaspora story; it is a story of America’s most tangled, honest, human roots.

MASQUE OF HONOR: A Historical Novel of the American South by Sharon Virts (Historical Fiction)
General Armistead Mason and John “Jack” Mason McCarty are brothers-in-law, second cousins and descendants of founding father George Mason IV. Ambitious and headstrong, together they set out to find love, acceptance and honor on their own merit. Armistead, by nature a politician, demands respect and strives for perfection. Jack, by inclination a rover, looks to forge his own path.
When Armistead is challenged by corruption in the political machine and is denied a seat in the US Congress, the two become embroiled in a bitter dispute that sets in motion an irrevocable chain of events, leading them to the dueling grounds and an outcome that changes everything.
Based on historical events of the 1819 Mason-McCarty duel, MASQUE OF HONOR is a story of courage, conviction and the cost of sacrificing one life to forge another.
