New Books or Older Titles?
Our book group read SUNFLOWERS SISTERS by Martha Hall Kelly this month (which we all loved), and for next month we are reading THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME by Laura Dave. We typically read new books --- we have fun at our meetings talking about what’s new that we want to explore. Reading through the submissions for our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?" feature, we see there is a whole range of timing for book releases in what you are reading. And I see the same thing when I answer requests from readers who write looking for discussion guides. I often get a request for a guide for a much older or lesser known title, and I really should ask the sender what had them gravitate towards that book. I love that there is not “one kind” of book group, but rather a wonderful variety of them.
Last Thursday night, we hosted our third "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event with Kim Michele Richardson as our guest. Her 2019 novel, THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK, was inspired by the true blue-skinned people of Kentucky and the brave and dedicated Kentucky Pack Horse library service of the 1930s.
With this opportunity to have a live book group discussion, Kim Michele dove deep into the book without the fear of spoiling anything. Stay tuned to hear the great questions from our readers…and if you already have read THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK (as we know many of you have from “What’s Your Book Group Reading"), there is plenty of background you will take away from this interview. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Kim Michele had a wonderful time at the event and sent me this link to a companion booklet that readers of the novel will want to take a look at. It includes a conversation with Kim Michele, authentic recipes and household hints from the Pack Horse Librarians, historical photos, and lots more bonus material, all of which is fascinating and will greatly enhance your discussion and understanding of the book.
Please keep in mind that next month’s “Bookaccino Live” afternoon event will take place on Wednesday, May 12th at 2pm ET. I will cover a number of books releasing between May 11th and June 1st, in addition to a few from July, that I would like to get on your radar. Click here to register. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win prizes.
Announcing Our New Special Contest --- and an Author Chat Opportunity!
We have a new contest to tell you about in this late-month newsletter. It’s for MASQUE OF HONOR by first-time novelist Sharon Virts, which was a Bets On pick when it released in February. In this coming-of-age tale set in early 19th-century America, two sons of the Virginia aristocracy risk it all to defend their dreams and determine their own destinies. Susan Koch, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning filmmaker, has glowing praise for Sharon and her fiction debut: “Sharon Virts is a natural storyteller and evocative writer with a keen eye for historical detail and drama. Set in 1816 and based on the true story of the rivalry between two Virginia gentlemen, MASQUE OF HONOR unfolds as an epic tale of romance, politics, ambition and power --- and paying the ultimate price to defend one’s honor.”
Three groups will win up to 12 copies of the book, along with a Zoom chat with Sharon. To enter, please fill out this form by Thursday, May 20th at noon ET. If you missed my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Sharon, you can watch it here and listen to the podcast here. Also, there is an enhanced book club guide on her site that we encourage you to check out. Here you will find "Behind the Book" material, food and drink recipes that are specific to the 19th century, and many more resources that are sure to spice up your discussion of the book.
Sharon is an absolute delight. She loves talking about books. In our next newsletter, I am going to interview her about the book group that she started and has been running. They have had some wonderful discussions about a whole range of books; you can see her recent discussion selections here.
Last Chance to Enter Our Two Previously Announced Contests
This is your last newsletter reminder to enter our contest for Gabriela Garcia’s debut novel, OF WOMEN AND SALT, which is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick and a Bets On selection. According to bestselling author Roxane Gay, “Gabriela Garcia captures the lives of Cuban women in a world to which they refuse to surrender, and she does so with precision and generosity and beauty." And Angie Cruz, the author of DOMINICANA, says, “I am a sucker for intergenerational family dramas with fraught mother and daughter relationships. Garcia’s vivid details, visceral prose and strong willful women negotiating how to survive in this world are easy to fall for.”
If you’d like to be one of the five groups who will win up to 12 copies of the book, all you have to do is fill out this form by Wednesday, May 5th at noon ET. You may remember that Gabriela was a recent “Bookreporter Talks To” guest. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast if you haven’t already.
Wednesday, May 5th at noon ET is also the deadline for our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. The big prize is WE BEGIN AT THE END by Chris Whitaker, a March Barnes & Noble Book Club pick and a Bets On title. We posted a rave review of the book on Bookreporter from Joe Hartlaub, who said, “Chris Whitaker’s book left me shattered like a fresh egg dropped on a summer-heated sidewalk…. Reading the last quarter of the novel may take a little longer than normal because you will want to digest the exquisite plot twists that go off like a string of explosives, moving backward through the book and forward past its conclusion.”
Three groups will win up to 12 copies of the book; be sure to fill out the form on this page before Wednesday’s deadline. If you didn’t catch my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Chris, who was so charming and such a delight to chat with, you can find it on YouTube here and on our podcast page here.
New Guides We've Added --- See more about them later in this newsletter!

SUNFLOWER SISTERS: This is the final installment in Martha Hall Kelly’s trilogy of novels about Caroline Ferriday’s family, following LILAC GIRLS and LOST ROSES. It revolves around the story of Caroline’s ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse during the Civil War whose calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Anne-May Wilson, a Southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists.
As I mentioned above, I discussed SUNFLOWER SISTERS with my book group on Monday night. We all loved the way that Martha builds her characters. We talked about the many parallels between life during the time of the Civil War and today, and how more change is needed. We were united in loathing the character of Anne-May Wilson! And we are sad to know that this trilogy has come to an end, but we are looking forward to what Martha writes next.

THE LAST NIGHT IN LONDON: In her latest historical novel, Karen White tells a captivating story of friendship, love and betrayal that moves between war-torn London during the Blitz and the present day. According to our Bookreporter reviewer Amy Gwiazdowski, “[White] has a way of intertwining the stories of her characters that makes putting the book down impossible. THE LAST NIGHT IN LONDON is heartbreaking and full of laughter, with a little mystery thrown in for good measure, which will keep you guessing until the very end.”

THE NINE LIVES OF ROSE NAPOLITANO: YA author Donna Freitas’ first novel for adults is about a woman who thought she never wanted to be a mother --- and the many ways that life can surprise us. In her Bookreporter review, Sarah Rachel Egelman says, “Rose is an attractive character who is smart, honest and thoughtful. Freitas does a good job capturing the pressure women continue to feel to meet gendered expectations, even if her character ultimately bows to them.”
Recently I had the pleasure of talking to Sally Hepworth about her new book, THE GOOD SISTER, which is my latest Bets On pick. I interviewed her just hours after she learned that she had hit the New York Times bestseller list for the first time!
Here, we are introduced to twin sisters Fern and Rose. Fern has behavior issues that allude to being on the autism spectrum and always has relied on Rose. When she discovers that Rose cannot get pregnant, Fern decides to pay Rose back by bearing her a child. This means finding the right man, one who won't disrupt her calculated routine. In her well-meaning attempts, Fern stirs up things in the past that may have been better left hidden.
Sally and I talked about her inspiration for this page-turning domestic thriller, its lovely dedication, and her adventures with her own family during lockdown in Melbourne, many of which were hilariously documented on Instagram. My husband and I adore her younger daughter, Clementine! Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
May’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites is SUMMER DARLINGS by Brooke Lea Foster, which is now in paperback. Don’t miss their Facebook Live Book Club chat about the book featuring the author on Thursday, May 27th at 1pm ET. Click here to RSVP for the event. This week, Jennifer Weiner joined two members of the S&S team to talk about BIG SUMMER, their April pick, which recently released in paperback. Click here for their discussion.
Upcoming Barnes & Noble Facebook Live Event
A reminder that on Tuesday, May 4th at 3pm ET, Kirstin Valdez Quade will talk to fellow author Karen Russell about her latest novel, THE FIVE WOUNDS, which is April’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. You can watch the event on B&N’s Facebook page.

Lea Geller’s novel, THE TRUTH AND OTHER HIDDEN THINGS, is one of the books we’re giving away in our Mother’s Day contest, along with 14 other fabulous fiction and nonfiction titles --- including Jan-Philipp Sendker’s Art of Hearing Heartbeats series, FINDING FREEDOM: A Cook's Story; Remaking a Life from Scratch by Erin French, THE ROSE CODE by Kate Quinn, and THE WINDSOR KNOT by SJ Bennett (we featured our guide for the latter earlier this year). New Guide: SUNFLOWER SISTERS by Martha Hall Kelly
SUNFLOWER SISTERS by Martha Hall Kelly (Historical Fiction)
The 2016 bestseller LILAC GIRLS introduced readers to Caroline Ferriday. Now, in SUNFLOWER SISTERS, Martha Hall Kelly tells the story of Ferriday’s ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse during the Civil War whose calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Anne-May Wilson, a Southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists. Inspired by true accounts, the novel provides a vivid, detailed look at the Civil War experience --- from the barbaric and inhumane plantations, to a war-torn New York City, to the horrors of the battlefield. It’s a sweeping story of women caught in a country on the brink of collapse, in a society grappling with nationalism and unthinkable racial cruelty.

THE GOOD SISTER by Sally Hepworth
THE GOOD SISTER by Sally Hepworth (Psychological Thriller)
Sally Hepworth is an author whose thrillers I always enjoy, so it was such fun to read THE GOOD SISTER. The story features twin sisters Fern and Rose. Fern has challenges, and Rose has always been there for her. Rose wants to have a baby but has been unable to get pregnant. What will Fern do for Rose? As the story unfolds, who is really doing what to whom?
The kernel of the story came to Sally when she saw her two daughters squabbling one day. The younger one had misbehaved, and when Sally was reprimanding her, the older one came to her defense. Sally thought this was so lovely until the older one said something to the effect of “No worries, I will get her back later.” And that got the wheels turning in motion for the plot.
