Hunkering Down with Our Book Groups in October
Thanks to all of you who answered our recent poll about how your group is meeting these days. For many years, book groups took place in homes, restaurants and libraries. There were a smattering of online discussions. But then the pandemic hit, and intrepid book group readers really got inventive as they tried to meet “safely.” Here’s a snapshot of what we learned about what you are up to these days.

27.9% - My group started meeting again, and we are meeting indoors.
-
17.2% - My group never stopped meeting.
-
15.3% - My group is meeting online.
-
9.5% - My group started meeting again, and we are meeting outdoors.
-
6.1% - My group is meeting at the library.
-
2.1% - My group started meeting again, and we were meeting indoors for a while, but we are back outdoors now.
-
2.1% - My group used to meet at the library, but we are now meeting online.
-
1.5% - My group fell apart during the pandemic.
-

What we also are hearing is how many more of you are connecting with authors via Zoom. Skype? Speakerphone? Ha, things of the past. I love to see how we as readers keep evolving when it comes to how we discuss books. Bravo to all of you!
THREE Upcoming Events Perfect for Book Groups
We are hosting three events in November that we think book groups will love!
“Bookaccino Live” Book Group Event on Tuesday, November 16th at 8pm ET
We are looking forward to our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, where our author guest will be Jim DeFede. His 2002 book, THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, inspired Broadway’s smash hit musical “Come From Away,” which is currently streaming on Apple TV+. It details what happened in Gander, Newfoundland, on September 11, 2001 when 38 planes bound for the United States were grounded there when U.S. airspace was closed. The story of how this small community came together to host their thousands of unexpected international guests is truly extraordinary.
I first read THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN when it originally released in 2002, and it is one of my all-time favorite books. Jim has written a new afterword for the latest edition where he updates us on the people we met two decades ago and what they are doing now.
You can sign up for this event by clicking here. Also, if you have a question for Jim that you would like to ask on camera during the event, please email me with the subject line “Question for Jim DeFede.” The timing for this event --- and this story --- is perfect as we get ready for Thanksgiving the following week.
ReadingGroupGuides.com’s “10 ½ Annual” Book Group Speed Dating Event on Friday, November 12th from 1pm ET to 3pm ET
Our “10 ½ Annual” Book Group Speed Dating event is fast approaching, and the publishers who will be participating are eager to let you know about books releasing this winter and spring that they are especially excited about. Please note: This is a “trade only” event, so attendance will be limited to librarians, booksellers and book group leaders of multiple book groups. If you fall into any of these categories and would like to attend this program, please email me with the subject line “Speed Dating” and tell me more about you.
“Bookaccino Live” Preview Event on Wednesday, November 10th at 2pm ET
Our last “Bookaccino Live” afternoon event of 2021 will be a big one as we talk about a number of books releasing between November 9th through the end of the year that I think should be on your radar. We also will look ahead to 2022 and tease some noteworthy titles coming out in January and February. Click here to sign up. And, as always, those who attend the live event will be given a link to a survey that asks which titles from the presentation they are most looking forward to reading. Those who complete the survey will be in the running to win a book!
Please scroll further down the newsletter for more details on these events and to sign up!
As promised, our October “Bookaccino Live” afternoon event is now available on our YouTube channel. Click here to see me present 31 books releasing between October 12th and November 2nd, along with a couple of December titles, that I think will appeal to you.
For this week’s “Bookreporter Talks To” interview, I had such fun catching up with Wade Rouse about his latest novel, THE SECRET OF SNOW, which he wrote under the pen name Viola Shipman (his grandmother’s name). Set in Northern Michigan, it’s the story of a Palm Springs meteorologist who heads back to her frigid hometown after she’s replaced by a virtual meteorologist that will never age, gain weight or renegotiate its contract. Now she has to confront her past --- and try to move forward in the town she ran from years ago.
In the interview, Wade explains how deeply personal this book was for him. He talks about Ginger Zee, the chief meteorologist for “Good Morning America” and ABC News; the history of snowmen; winter sports; and his snowbird life in Palm Springs. He also reveals what’s next for him in fiction, writing as Viola Shipman --- THE EDGE OF SUMMER, releasing next July --- and in nonfiction with a new memoir, MAGIC SEASON: A Son’s Story, which will be available next May. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. We also posted a discussion guide for the book, which you can take a look at here.
Austin Ruh, our media producer, joined me to talk to Sarah Ruhl about her memoir, SMILE: The Story of a Face, for a recent “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. Sarah is a playwright, essayist and poet, as well as a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and a Tony Award nominee. Austin is a huge admirer of her playwriting, so I was happy that he was on board to discuss this aspect of her work.
SMILE is the story of Sarah’s decade-long journey with Bell's palsy, as well as her experiences as a mother and an artist. After surviving a high-risk pregnancy, half of her face is left paralyzed. She is told that most patients recover within a few days, but her face doesn't go back to normal. Her life is roses to the public, with a play opening on Broadway and her family growing, but she struggles with happiness, both in what others can see on her face and what she reflects on internally.
In the interview, Sarah discusses how people feel emotion, especially how external expressions have the power to control our own feelings. She also talks about her writing, how her story grew into a memoir, how certain writing projects are handled differently, and what she's working on next. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Austin and I are already talking about doing a few more projects together.
Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest
Wednesday, November 10th at noon ET is the deadline to enter our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. Three of you will win up to 12 copies of ROCK PAPER SCISSORS by Alice Feeney, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick, for your group. According to our Bookreporter reviewer Rebecca Munro, the book "is, without a doubt, the most chilling novel I have read this year...if not ever. Never before have I had to read a domestic thriller with my flashlight at the ready, but Feeney writes with such precision and perfect pacing that her already shocking explorations into the human psyche become exponentially more horrifying. This is very much a writer’s thriller, and her mastery of her craft is on full display at every twist." Be sure to check out the guide, our rave review and my Bets On commentary.
We also have added discussion guides for these three books:
-
ONCE UPON A WARDROBE: Here’s what Patti Callahan has to say about her new work of historical fiction: “I bet you’ve wondered where your very favorite tales began. How they started. Their origin story, as it were. And that’s what I wondered about Narnia. As young George Devonshire asks in this novel, ‘Where did Narnia come from?’ With that in mind, I set out to find some answers.”
-
FIGHT NIGHT: Miriam Toews’ new novel is a love letter to mothers and grandmothers, and to all the women who are still fighting --- painfully, ferociously --- for a way to live on their own terms.
-
FEMLANDIA: Christina Dalcher, who wrote the international bestseller VOX, is back with a new thriller set in an alternate near future where a woman and her daughter seek refuge in an all-female colony. However, it turns out that the safe haven they were hoping for is the most dangerous place they could be.

Book Group Event Featuring Jim DeFede,
Author of THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN
We have our next "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event lined up for Tuesday, November 16th at 8pm ET. Our author guest will be Jim DeFede, whose 2002 book, THE DAY THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland, served as the basis for the smash hit Broadway musical "Come From Away," which is now streaming on Apple TV+.
When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11th, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill. Over the course of four days, many of the passengers developed friendships with Gander residents that they expect to last a lifetime.
If you have a question for Jim DeFede that you would like to ask on camera during the event, please send Carol an email with the subject line “Question for Jim DeFede.” We hope you will join us as we talk to Jim about his inspiration for writing the story of the people of Gander --- and how he went about researching this very special book.

Despite her timidity about approaching the famous author, Megs soon finds herself taking tea with the Oxford don and his own brother, imploring them for answers. Stephanie Land's New York Times Bestseller, MAID,
is Now a Limited Series on Netflix
MAID: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie Land (Memoir)
At 28, Stephanie Land turned to housekeeping to make ends meet. With a tenacious grip on her dream to provide her daughter the very best life possible, Stephanie worked days and took classes online to earn a college degree, and began to write relentlessly. She wrote the true stories that weren't being told: the stories of overworked and underpaid Americans. Of living on food stamps to eat. Of the government programs that provided her housing, but that doubled as halfway houses. The aloof government employees who called her lucky for receiving assistance. She wrote to remember the fight, to eventually cut through the deep-rooted stigmas of the working poor. MAID explores the underbelly of upper-middle-class America and the reality of what it's like to be in service to them.
» Margaret Qualley stars alongside real-life mom Andie MacDowell in Netflix's 10-episode limited series adaptation of MAID.
