March 14, 2022 Interviews with AuthorsOne of my favorite parts of doing our “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews is thinking of questions that book clubs may want answered from authors whose books they may be discussing. While we are sure not to talk spoilers, I love sharing the backstory on where the germ of the idea for their book originated, as well as the research they did to enhance their storytelling. We’re still curious about how you organize yourselves for your meetings. If you have not done so already, please answer our survey here. There is lots going on this month, so let’s get right to it! This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Wednesday, March 23rd at 8pm ET. Our guest will be Lisa See, and we’ll be talking about her first book, ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, a memoir of her Chinese-American family. Click here to register. If you would like to ask Lisa a question on camera during the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Question for Lisa See.” Those who are camera shy can send their questions via the Q&A feature on Zoom. Coming to San Marino, CA in May will be an opera inspired by ON GOLD MOUNTAIN, so I am looking forward to asking Lisa about that as well. Click here for all the details and to purchase your tickets. Our Latest Monthly Contest is Live! This fascinating story is told in separate points of view over two time periods. In 1939 Paris, young and ambitious Odile Souchet stands to lose her library when Nazis invade the City of Light. Banding together, the librarians join the resistance, using books and knowledge to their advantage. In 1983 Montana, a lonely teenager named Lily becomes friends with her mysterious neighbor, a war bride from Paris, and what she discovers is both intense and revealing. Three groups will win up to 12 copies of THE PARIS LIBRARY. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, April 6th at noon ET. If you missed my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Janet from last year, you can watch it here and listen to the podcast here. Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of speaking to Allison Pataki about her latest novel, THE MAGNIFICENT LIVES OF MARJORIE POST, which is a Bets On selection. Marjorie Merriweather Post created an amazing life for herself. She served as a host to presidents, accompanied her husband as an ambassador to the Soviet Union, and changed how Americans ate. This book tells the true story of how she made the journey from small town farm girl to a world of wealth, influence and high society. In the interview, Allison talked about discovering Marjorie’s story and how Marjorie balanced her societal, political and charity efforts. And yes, we dished about her four marriages. It’s a lively conversation about a woman and a book that could make for a great book group discussion. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. And you can see the discussion guide here. We also have added guides for these four books:
GROUNDSKEEPING is March’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick. In Lee Cole’s debut novel, two very different people navigate the entanglements of class, identity and coming of age in an America coming apart at the seams. Jenna says, “It’s a story about love and identity and where we are from. It is about what makes us a family. I feel like it will lead to a lot of important conversation about what brings us together and what divides us." Cole adds, "While the events of the book are fictional, they do have their basis in my own experiences of homesickness, working as a tree trimmer and just trying to navigate my relationship with Kentucky." The aforementioned THE PARIS LIBRARY is one of TWO March picks for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites; the other is THE FOREST OF VANISHING STARS by Kristin Harmel, which releases in paperback on May 3rd. On Monday, April 4th at 1pm ET, members of the S&S team will talk to Janet and Kristin about their books. You can RSVP by clicking here. At the beginning of the month, Elizabeth Macneal joined Book Club Favorites to talk about her latest book, CIRCUS OF WONDERS, their February pick. Click here for their discussion. For more March selections, including the Indie Next and LibraryReads lists, see our “Favorite Monthly Lists & Picks” feature here. In January, we featured the guide for Jacquelyn Mitchard’s latest novel, THE GOOD SON. Now we bring you my interview with her. Stefan was just 17 when he was sent to prison for the murder of his girlfriend. Upon his release three years later, his mother watches the community turn against him as she grapples with her own son committing such an unthinkable crime. Jacquelyn talked to me about the struggles characters face when up against impossible emotions and why she wrote the book in the first person. She said she had the first two sentences from the start; as I told her, they’re a great “cold open.” We also reminisced about THE DEEP END OF THE OCEAN, which was her debut novel and Oprah’s inaugural Book Club pick. This was more than 25 years ago in 1996, the same year that The Book Report Network launched. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. We hosted this month’s “Bookaccino Live” preview event last Wednesday afternoon. I talked about 30 books releasing between now and April 5th, along with eight from May, that we wanted to get on your radar. You can watch it here and see a list of the featured titles here. Next month’s “Bookaccino Live” preview event will take place on Wednesday, April 13th at 2pm ET. I will present titles releasing between April 12th and May 3rd, along with a few from June, that I think will appeal to you. Click here to sign up. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize. Enter Our Bookreporter Contests and Win Some Fabulous Books! Also, let us know what you're reading in our Word of Mouth contest, and you'll have a chance to win two books. For this contest period, we're giving away THE GOLDEN COUPLE by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and THE LIGHTNING ROD: A Zig & Nola Novel by Brad Meltzer. The deadline for your entries is Friday, March 18th at noon ET. Netflix Book Club’s March pick of the month is THE VISCOUNT WHO LOVED ME by Julia Quinn. It’s the inspiration for the second season of “Bridgerton”, which drops on March 25th. According to Netflix, “Season 2 of ‘Bridgerton’ follows Lord Anthony Bridgerton, the eldest Bridgerton sibling and Viscount, as he sets out to find a suitable wife. Driven by his duty to uphold the family name, Anthony’s search for a debutante who meets his impossible standards seems ill-fated until Kate and her younger sister Edwina Sharma arrive from India.” Here’s an event that I think you might enjoy. On Thursday, March 31st at 8pm ET, I am going to be interviewing Janet Evanovich and Nelson DeMille as part of Simon & Schuster’s Spring 2022 AuthorFest. These authors have created some of the most iconic recurring characters in fiction, and I am going to talk to them about how they do it book after book. You can find information on how to attend here. Pictured above is Jayne and her book group, the North Wales Area Library Book Club, who won copies of ROCK PAPER SCISSORS by Alice Feeney in our October “What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. Jayne told us, “We had a GREAT discussion. I would welcome another selection should one become available.” Fabulous picture, Jayne! I'm so glad you and your fellow members had such a fun time discussing the book. I received this note from another reader, Susanne: “I'm sending a picture of our MargaREADa book group, which meets monthly. We take turns picking the book. We all loved BLACK CAKE, and we all loved the black cake baked by a member of the group --- she found the recipe on the internet. Not the best pic...we may have already started on the rum punch. Also, a photo of the portion of the cake I got to bring home.” Susanne, I love both pictures! I’m so happy you all enjoyed your reading and eating experiences. My group also is reading BLACK CAKE, and one of our group members has ordered a cake for our meeting. I love when people do things like this to enhance their discussions. As more and more of us are meeting in person again, I look forward to seeing more ideas from our readers. Enjoy your group’s discussion this month! "What's Your Book Group Reading This Month?" THE VIOLIN CONSPIRACY by Brendan Slocumb (Mystery/Thriller) I absolutely loved THE VIOLIN CONSPIRACY by Brendan Slocumb. I have never been a fan of classical music, so reading a book about a concert artist is not something that typically would grab my attention. But I was riveted. Ray McMillian loves playing the violin, but he’s using a school rental instrument, which is not the way one is going to get ahead in the music world. When visiting his grandmother, she suggests that he look around the attic in her house where her grandfather’s fiddle is. He treks up there, and after days of searching, he finds a green alligator case with a violin inside. Ray practices for hours on it, with his mom complaining about “that noise” and lending no support. As he studies music in school, a teacher takes him under her wing and guides him as she sees real talent in him.
