My book group read --- and loved --- THE MAGNIFICENT LIVES OF MARJORIE POST. We were lucky enough to have Allison Pataki join us to talk about the book during part of our discussion; her schedule has been so busy that this was something very special. We asked her lots of questions about her research. She said she was impressed with the questions and feedback from our group, some of which she had not heard before. One of our group members said that the book was so well done that it has spoiled her to find something this good as she is reading. High praise.
Julia, who is terrific at making themed treats for our group, baked a pie with a crust made from Grape Nuts cereal. It was done like a graham cracker crumb crust with orange juice and butter holding it together. She made a chocolate pudding filling and topped it with whipped cream. I am not a huge fan of the cereal on its own, but this was terrific.
Next up, we are reading A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith. We have heard people note it as a classic for years. None of us have read it. I am looking forward to this discussion!
Last Wednesday night, we hosted our 10th “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event with Janet Skeslien Charles. We had such a great discussion about her instant New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today bestseller, THE PARIS LIBRARY, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now out in paperback. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast.
Janet and I also trailed off in a few other directions, talking about book clubs and bookish memories. One was about my loving the bookmobile in my town when I was growing up. This prompted a lovely note with a bookish memory from Debbie, who has joined us as an on-stage participant at many of our programs.
“You brought back great memories when you talked about the bookmobile. I was born in 1952 in a town where the one library was not accessible to someone whose mother didn’t drive and whose parents were not readers. I remember being in first grade and seeing the bookmobile, which was only available to fourth, fifth and sixth graders, parked in front of the school.
“Finally, the day arrived when I could get a library card and visit the bookmobile, which came once a month, but I could only borrow two books. Eventually, the bookmobile came to my neighborhood every two weeks, and I remember that sound as it lowered itself closer to the ground. I would climb in and sit on the floor because all the kids’ books were on the bottom shelves. I was always in the way of the adults who kept tripping over me. At first I was limited to five books, which was wonderful and disappointing at the same time because I would finish the books before the bookmobile made its next visit in two weeks. Finally, the neighborhood was big enough to warrant a visit every week at different places in the neighborhood. That was heaven!
“I have been a book lover since the day I learned to read and an unabashed book hoarder since I became an adult and I could buy books that I could keep forever. I will always love the bookmobile, which played such a significant part in my life!”
Anyone else with a memory like that?
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Chris Pavone, whose newly released novel, TWO NIGHTS IN LISBON, will be a Bets On pick. This riveting thriller centers on Ariel Price, who wakes up on her vacation in Lisbon to find her husband missing. The more the police search, the more questions surface, such as: What was he really there to do?
Chris talked to me about his choice to keep women as lead characters in his books. He also discussed the slow crawl of his thrillers, the inspiration that led him to set a book in Lisbon, and the truth behind his final sentences (with no spoilers, of course). Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. We also are featuring the discussion guide, which you can find here.
I also had the pleasure of catching up with Kim Michele Richardson, whose new novel, THE BOOK WOMAN'S DAUGHTER, is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2019’s THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK. This time, readers are introduced to Honey Lovett, the daughter of the beloved Troublesome book woman, Cussy Mary Carter. Honey picks up the same pack horse library trail as her mother, but she still has countless struggles as she brings the books where they need to go.
Kim Michele talked to me about the success of THE BOOK WOMAN OF TROUBLESOME CREEK and why she decided to continue the story. She also discussed sequels, extraordinary women and the value of books. Click here to listen to the podcast and here for the guide, which we featured in the last newsletter.
Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest
Next Wednesday, June 8th at noon ET is the deadline to enter our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. Three of you will win up to 12 copies of Ash Davidson’s national bestseller, DAMNATION SPRING, for your group. A Bets On pick when it released in hardcover last August, the book is now available in paperback. According to Sarah Rachel Egelman in her Bookreporter review, “Davidson taps into many of the themes found in great American storytelling, and this impressive debut heralds her arrival as a writer to pay close attention to…. The possibility for violence and heartbreak is on every page. Yet the tender hearts of the characters are never eclipsed by plot devices, resulting in a well-balanced, affecting and provocative novel.”
In addition to TWO NIGHTS IN LISBON, we are featuring the following guides in this newsletter:
-
THIS TIME TOMORROW: What if you could take a vacation to your past? This is the thought-provoking question at the heart of Emma Straub’s latest novel. Here, she offers her own twist on traditional time-travel tropes and a different kind of love story.
-
THE LIONESS: A luxurious African safari turns deadly for a Hollywood starlet and her entourage in Chris Bohjalian’s new historical thriller, which is already in development for a television series. Of course, Chris is no stranger to TV adaptations of his work; “The Flight Attendant”, which is based on his 2018 thriller of the same name, just wrapped up its second season on HBO Max.
-
THE LOST SUMMERS OF NEWPORT: Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig and Karen White (affectionately known as “Team W”) have teamed up once again to pen a novel of money and secrets set among the famous summer mansions of Newport, Rhode Island, spanning over a century from the Gilded Age to the present day.
-
BOOK LOVERS: As a cutthroat literary agent and a bookish brooding editor are thrown together again and again, what they discover might just unravel the carefully crafted stories they’ve written about themselves, in Emily Henry’s new novel, which is May’s #1 Indie Next pick.
-
THE LIFEGUARDS: Amanda Eyre Ward’s latest is both a story about the secrets we tell to protect the ones we love and a riveting novel of suspense filled with half-truths and betrayals, fierce love and complicated friendships, and the loss of innocence on one hot summer night. If you missed my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Amanda, you can watch it here and listen to the podcast here.

THE LIONESS by Chris Bohjalian (Historical Thriller)
Tanzania, 1964. When A-list actress Katie Barstow and her new husband, David Hill, decide to bring their Hollywood friends to the Serengeti for their honeymoon, they envision paradise. Their glamorous guests expect civilized adventure: fresh ice from the kerosene-powered ice maker, dinners of cooked gazelle meat, and plenty of stories to tell over lunch back on Rodeo Drive. What Katie and her glittering entourage do not expect is this: a kidnapping gone wrong, their guides bleeding out in the dirt, and a team of Russian mercenaries herding their hostages into Land Rovers, guns to their heads. As the powerful sun gives way to night, the gunmen shove them into abandoned huts, and Katie prays for a simple thing: to see the sun rise one more time.

Over the holidays you will not hear what celebrities there are doing; it’s known to be a place where respect is given to those vacationing.
