June 30, 2022
June 30, 2022 The “One-Book” Book ClubSummer is often a time when we find ourselves spending long stretches of time away from home. It may be weekends at a beach or lake house...or, if you are really lucky, the whole summer season. It also may be days at a swim club, or weekends. Or you may be getting together with family. Bring on the “One-Book” Book Club. Think about ONE book that would be fun for the group to read and would make for a great discussion. Give it a vote if multiple suggestions are out there. Plot a date and time to talk, and enjoy the discussion. See this as a great opportunity to talk books with people you normally do not chat about books with. We’d love to hear your thoughts on ideas like this, as well as if you pull together a “One-Book” Book Club. Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest According to author Attica Locke, the book “opened my heart and mind to specifics of the experience of Japanese Americans during the Second World War. Rich in period detail, it is page-turning historical fiction, a tender family story, and a mystery that plays on two levels: What happened to Rose Ito? and At what cost are Japanese Americans finally seen as full Americans? It’s a story that moved me deeply.” I keep talking about this book with friends and thinking about the period details that were pitch perfect. We have three new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter. First up is Tom Perrotta, whose latest book, TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN, is the highly anticipated sequel to his 1998 novel, ELECTION, and a Bets On pick. Tracy Flick is back, and once again she is determined to take high school politics by storm. Tom talks about what drew him to write about Tracy again and how she has become an icon. He sheds light on his work as a comic writer, as well as what it was like to work on HBO’s “Mrs. Fletcher” and “The Leftovers.” Curious if Reese Witherspoon, who played Tracy in Election on the big screen, has weighed in on TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN? Tom lets us know. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Also, don’t miss the guide and our review on Bookreporter. TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN is Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites pick for July. On Tuesday, July 19th at 2pm ET, members of the S&S team will discuss the book with Tom. Click here to RSVP for the event. If you missed their discussion of June’s pick, ON GIN LANE, featuring Brooke Lea Foster as their special guest, you can watch it here. I had the pleasure of catching up with Julie Clark, whose new novel, THE LIES I TELL, is a New York Times and USA Today bestseller, and will be a Bets On selection (you can see my commentary in the next newsletter). This twisted domestic thriller dives deep into the psyches and motivations of two women and their unwavering quest to seek justice for the past and rewrite the future. Julie explains the kernel of the idea that prompted the book; which of the two main characters, Meg or Kat, was easier to write; the challenges that the story's tight timeline presented; and why she wrote an alternate ending to her previous thriller, THE LAST FLIGHT, a Bets On pick that also was a New York Times and USA Today bestseller. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. We also have added the guide, so be sure to check that out, along with our Bookreporter review. I also talked to Meg Mitchell Moore about her latest title, VACATIONLAND, which is a Bets On pick as well. The summer home in the novel is loosely based on a house that Meg's friends own in Maine. She loves visiting there, so setting a book in that particular location was a joy. VACATIONLAND opens with a woman on a bus headed to Maine, which Meg notes hits the theme of “a stranger comes to town.” Why she is there is juxtaposed around the story of Louisa and her children, who are set to spend a wonderful summer at her parents' house. But her father is slipping with Alzheimer’s, which casts a pall over the usual summer vibe. Meg talks about how she worked on the pacing for secrets kept and secrets revealed. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. We are now featuring the guide for Joshua Moehling’s debut novel, AND THERE HE KEPT HER, which Julie Clark calls “[a] dark and complex mystery that will consume you, starring a protagonist who is equal parts quirky Milhone and steady Gamache.” And according to Jonathan Santlofer, the book is “a taut, beautifully written thriller reminiscent of Karin Slaughter. A novel with heart, its protagonist, acting Sheriff Ben Packard, is the kind of hero we need today, a man wrestling with his sexual identity as he searches for missing teens in a small Minnesota town guarding secrets of its own.” Click here for our review on Bookreporter and here for an interview with Joshua conducted by our reviewer, Ray Palen. Book Club Announcements for July Please keep in mind that next Tuesday, July 5th at 3pm ET, Barnes & Noble will host a virtual event featuring Leesa Cross-Smith, who will discuss her new novel, HALF-BLOWN ROSE, which is B&N’s June Book Club selection. The focus will be on titles releasing between July 12th and August 2nd, in addition to a few from September, that I would like to get on your radar. Click here to register. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize. I still need to read our June book group selection for our meeting that was postponed until July. We are reading a classic, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith. This feels like when I was in school, and there was an assignment given --- and I waited until the 11th hour to read it. But then again, I am reading with three other books on my stack for the long weekend. Brilliant excuse, right? Maybe I will revert to reading X pages a day, but I bet I am going to start it and love it. I will report back next month! Here’s to a wonderful 4th of July weekend…and to some great reading ahead with your book group --- be it a “One-Book” Book Club or your regular club! Bookreporter.com Bets On: VACATIONLAND by Meg Mitchell Moore (Fiction) As the novel opens, a young woman named Kristie is headed to Maine on a bus. She has a backpack, $761 and a mission to figure something out. That is the setup for a typical scenario of “a woman on a quest.” From there, the story shifts to Louisa, a tenured professor who has arrived in Maine from Brooklyn with her three children to spend the summer with her parents while her husband launches his podcast brand back in the city. Louisa is counting on her folks to help out with the kids as she works on a book with a deadline she has to hit. - Click here to read more about the book.
