Author Interviews and “Bookaccino Live”
Book Group Events for Fall
We have been hearing from so many book groups about how much they have been enjoying our “Bookreporter Talks To” author interviews. Some are watching them before their discussions to decide what to read, and others say that they are sharing them with their groups to view before their meetings. We love hearing this. Please note that authors who have interviews available for a title are noted on our "Videos & Podcasts" page here.
We are getting ready to set up our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group fall programming. We are going through titles that we feel have been out long enough to merit a discussion. If you have a book that you would like to suggest, email me at [email protected] with the subject line “BLBG” and write your suggestion in the body of the email. It CAN be someone who we already have interviewed for “Bookreporter Talks To”.
Megan Miranda is back with her latest riveting thriller, THE LAST TO VANISH, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick filled with taut suspense and shocking twists that will keep you guessing until the very end. Focusing on themes of truth, myth, reality and the surprising convergence of all three, the book brilliantly explores the lengths to which people will go to hide their secrets --- and not just from each other. It also delves into the secrets we hide from ourselves, and whether or not we “truly” know the people who surround us. Click here for the discussion guide and here for my Bets On commentary.
THE LAST TO VANISH is Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites pick for August. On Tuesday, August 23rd at 12pm ET, members of the S&S team will discuss the book with Megan. Click here to RSVP for the event. If you missed their discussion of July’s pick, TRACY FLICK CAN’T WIN, featuring Tom Perrotta as their special guest, you can watch it here.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Jennifer Hillier, whose new thriller, THINGS WE DO IN THE DARK, will be a Bets On selection. In it, Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future.
Jennifer explains what sent her in the direction to write this book; she wanted to look at what would happen to someone who had been damaged as a child and where they go from there. She talks about writing out of sequence and being “an instant gratification author,” the fun she had coming up with all the scenes, and her relationship with her editor, who helped her with the flow of the novel. We also talk sharp objects and Russian Red lipstick. Click here to watch the video and here to listen to the podcast. Also, be sure to check out the guide and our review on Bookreporter. My Bets On commentary will appear in the next newsletter.
Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest
Wednesday, August 10th at noon ET is the deadline to enter our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. Three of you will win up to 12 copies of LIGHTNING STRIKE, a powerful prequel to William Kent Krueger's acclaimed Cork O’Connor series, for your group. A Bets On pick when it released in hardcover last August, the book is now available in paperback.
According to Kristin Hannah, “William Kent Krueger is a master storyteller at the top of his game with LIGHTNING STRIKE. A pitch perfect, richly imagined story that is both an edge-of-your-seat thriller and an evocative, emotionally-charged coming of age tale that explores the complex bonds between fathers and sons and the long simmering animosities of the past. This is a beautifully written novel that packs a powerful punch. I loved it." Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter --- and find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book here.
Please note that Kent’s new Cork O’Connor mystery, FOX CREEK, will be in stores on August 23rd.
In addition to THE LAST TO VANISH and THINGS WE DO IN THE DARK, we are featuring the following guides in this newsletter:
-
SUGAR AND SALT: Susan Wiggs returns to Perdita Street (from her previous bestseller, THE LOST AND FOUND BOOKSHOP) in another emotionally resonant story of friendship, hardship, redemption and love between a San Francisco baker and a barbecue master from Texas.
-
THE BODYGUARD: She’s got his back. He’s got her heart. They’ve got a secret. What could possibly go wrong? Emily Henry calls Katherine Center's new novel “[a]s funny and sweet as all the very best nineties rom-coms, but with Center’s signature heart-tugging depth. I wish I could erase it from my mind just to read it again for the first time. A shot of pure joy.”
-
THE RETREAT: Detective Elin Warner is back in Sarah Pearse’s second novel, a follow-up to last year’s critically acclaimed debut, THE SANATORIUM, which was a Reese’s Book Club selection. Pearse has penned another locked-room-style thriller that beautifully balances a heart-pounding plot with intriguing, three-dimensional characters.
-
REPUTATION: Sarah Vaughan, who many of you know as the author of ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL (which is now a hit series on Netflix), has written a new psychological thriller about a politician whose less-than-stellar personal life is put under the microscope when a body is discovered in her home.
We also continue to feature the guide for ACTS OF VIOLET, a twisty new novel from Margarita Montimore, whose previous book, OONA OUT OF ORDER, was a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. After iconic magician Violet Volk disappears, Sasha must figure out what really happened to her sister --- while doing her best to avoid Cameron Frank, who is hosting a podcast devoted to all things Violet. Alternating between Sasha’s narration and Cameron’s podcast transcripts, interspersed with documents that offer a tantalizing peek at Violet herself, Montimore’s story of fame, deception and forgiveness will make you believe in magic.
This year's Fallon Book Club selection is TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW by Gabrielle Zevin, which also is July's Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. In the past, this selection came down to a reader vote, but this time Jimmy Fallon made the pick himself. The book revolves around two friends --- often in love, but never lovers --- who come together as creative partners in the world of video game design. Success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. If you missed Thursday's B&N Book Club event, where Gabrielle talked about the book with Shannon DeVito and Miwa Messer, you can watch it here.
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for our next “Bookaccino Live” preview event, which will take place on Wednesday, August 10th at 2pm ET. The focus will be on titles releasing between August 9th and September 6th, in addition to a few from October, that I would like to get on your radar. Click here to register. Those attending the live event will be asked to answer a survey about the books from the presentation that they are most interested in reading and will be eligible to win a prize.
My book group is planning to meet poolside in August. Our current selection is THE TOBACCO WIVES by Adele Myers. Has anyone else read it?

LIGHTNING STRIKE by William Kent Krueger (Historical Mystery)
Aurora is a small town nestled in the ancient forest alongside the shores of Minnesota’s Iron Lake. In the summer of 1963, it is the whole world to 12-year-old Cork O’Connor, its rhythms as familiar as his own heartbeat. But when Cork stumbles upon the body of a man he revered hanging from a tree in an abandoned logging camp, it is the first in a series of events that will cause him to question everything he took for granted about his hometown, his family and himself. Cork’s father, Liam O’Connor, is Aurora’s sheriff, and it is his job to confirm that the man’s death was the result of suicide, as all the evidence suggests. In the shadow of his father’s official investigation, Cork begins to look for answers on his own.

THE BODYGUARD by Katherine Center (Romantic Comedy)
Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker. When Jack’s mom gets sick, he comes home to the family’s Texas ranch to help out. There's only one catch: He doesn’t want his family to know about his stalker. Or the bodyguard thing. And so Hannah --- against her will and her better judgment --- finds herself pretending to be Jack’s girlfriend as a cover. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem.

Bookreporter.com Bets On: THE SHORE by Katie Runde
THE SHORE by Katie Runde (Fiction)
Through the years, I have read many books that have taken place at beach locations, but I am trying to remember one set at a New Jersey beach. Here in Jersey, where I am from, we do not go to the beach --- we “go down the shore.” So I was really excited to get my hands on a book called THE SHORE by Katie Runde. It is set in Seaside Beach, a beach town well known to Katie as she grew up there; while this is not “her story,” she borrows from her own life for inspiration. Growing up in a shore town means working all summer to make enough for your family to survive the winter months when these towns become quiet and a version of a special paradise for the locals.
The novel is told through the eyes of the Dunne family --- Margot, and her two teen daughters, Liz and Evy. There is also a one-page chapter from Brian, the husband and father, which opens the book. It is poignant as to why he gets just a page.
