March 31, 2023 Taking You Beyond the BookOver the years, one of the things that we have prided ourselves on the most is taking readers beyond the book --- and sharing authors who do that. Between our interviews, “Bookaccino Live” preview events and “Bookaccino Live” Book Group programs, we strive to do just that. We realize that our audience is across the country, and many of you do not get the opportunity to meet authors. Read on in this newsletter for ways that we are sharing authors and author experiences on some books that we do not want you to miss! Tuesday marked the highly anticipated release of Lisa Scottoline's second work of historical fiction, LOYALTY, following 2021’s ETERNAL. Set during the rise of the Mafia in Sicily, this emotional, action-packed epic of love and justice will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick. Readers will be transported to the dramatic and ruggedly beautiful island of Sicily, the jewel of the Mediterranean, where lush lemon groves and mouth-watering cuisine contrast with a turbulent history of colonization and corruption. I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Lisa to talk about LOYALTY for a “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. We covered plenty of ground, talking about Lisa’s trip to Sicily that inspired the characters and the settings. Before heading there, she had done a lot of research about Italy and the rise of the Mafia, but her travels gave her the opportunity to situate her characters and bring them to the page for readers. We also discussed the book’s structure and why it was done that way. Edoardo Ballerini narrates the audiobook, and Lisa explained why she feels he is so right for this book. Plus, she shared what the novel’s original title was and how it changed. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We are happy to share the discussion guide for the book, along with our rave review from Bookreporter’s Jana Siciliano, who has this to say: “With the backdrop of Sicily, the groves of fruit, the beautiful coastline and the fantastic cuisine, LOYALTY concocts a thrilling premise that lassos various storylines and pulls them into a tight-knit, compelling novel that you won’t be able to put down…. LOYALTY is an unforgettable piece of historical fiction. It’s exciting and moving, and these characters will soon become like family to each reader. An A+++ reading experience.” Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter. Since November, Lisa has hosted a terrific series of online events leading up to the book’s publication where she shared short videos that she shot in Sicily, all of which inspired LOYALTY. Readers can now view those, along with her commentary and an interactive map of the actual locations mentioned in the book, here. This map is the perfect way to enhance your reading experience and learn about the inspiration and research behind LOYALTY. Visit Lisa’s website for much more about the book, and be sure to check out her book tour schedule, which includes both in-person and virtual events. On Wednesday night, we hosted our latest “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event. Allison Pataki joined us to discuss her most recent novel, THE MAGNIFICENT LIVES OF MARJORIE POST, a Bets On pick that is now available in paperback. Here, she has reimagined the remarkable life of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress and trailblazing leader of the 20th century. Allison talked about what drew her to write about Marjorie and how she decided which aspects of Marjorie’s life to share. She also explained how her work as an on-air journalist helped her as she was both researching and discussing the book. The conversation was brisk and fun, and the audience questions were fabulous. Allison also previewed her next novel, AMERICAN MUSE, which centers on the life of Margaret Fuller, whose circle included Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne (who based Hester Prynne on her), Louisa May Alcott and Edgar Allan Poe. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. I am thrilled to announce that Kristin Hannah will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 26th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up for it here. We will be talking about Kristin’s #1 New York Times bestseller, THE FOUR WINDS, a Bets On selection that is newly released in paperback and is our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” prize book. Just as we did on Wednesday night, there will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Kristin. For the first part, those who are asking a question “on camera” will be featured. This includes spending time with Kristin backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Kristin" by noon ET on the 26th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state. Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest We also are giving away THE FOUR WINDS and the aforementioned LOYALTY in our inaugural Authors On The Web contest, in addition to THE LIES I TELL by Julie Clark and THE ONLY SURVIVORS by Megan Miranda. If you would like to be one of five readers who will win all four of these titles, be sure to fill out this form by Friday, April 14th at noon ET. For those of you who don't know, Authors On The Web is the division of our company that builds websites for authors. From time to time, we will spotlight our Authors On The Web authors who have books coming out in a certain month, and giving you the opportunity to follow them on social media and sign up for their newsletters --- and, of course, win copies of their books! On Tuesday, I was lucky to catch Kristin’s last live tour event in New Jersey at a luncheon for the College Club of Northern NJ. She was interviewed by Christina Baker Kline, and they covered a lot of ground. One thing that always has impressed me about Kristin is her ability to write a draft, feel where the story is going --- and walk away from what she wrote when she sees she is headed the wrong way. She did this with THE FOUR WINDS, abandoning 300+ pages when she realized that Elsa should be the main character, not her daughter. And she wrote THE GREAT ALONE three times --- first trying it as a thriller, then from the male point of view, and finally what we read. The ability to say that this is not right and pull back is something I admire. It is not easy when you are creating. And for true fun, Kristin's first editor from when she was writing romance was in the audience. We did some great reminiscing at lunch. Above you can see photos of Kristin and Christina, along with Kristin and me. We have two additional “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter. First up is William Landay. His new novel, ALL THAT IS MINE I CARRY WITH ME, is his first book in 11 years, following his 2012 bestseller, DEFENDING JACOB. A tale about family --- family secrets and vengeance, but also family love --- this Bets On pick grapples with a primal question: When does loyalty reach its limit? Bill discussed the structure of the novel, which is told in four parts, and why he chose this method of storytelling. He also delved into crime writing and what has happened to this genre both in books and on the screen. And yes, we talked about the limited series adaptation of DEFENDING JACOB on Apple TV+, which was so well done. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We also are featuring the guide and our Bookreporter review. I also had a wonderful conversation with Sadeqa Johnson about her second work of historical fiction, THE HOUSE OF EVE, for which we featured the guide last month. This daring, beautiful and redemptive novel --- which was Reese’s Book Club pick for February and a Bets On selection --- explores what it means to be a woman and a mother, and how much one is willing to sacrifice to achieve her greatest goal. Sadeqa explained that the inspiration for the book came from her family history. She also discussed character development and which character came to her first. Unlike her previous novel, YELLOW WIFE, she had lots of contemporary history to delve into as she was conducting her research, including foods, rituals and, yes, fashion. Then there was the statistic that between 1945 and 1973, 1.5 million women in the United States lost children to forced adoption, and what that might mean. Here, she tells the story of a young woman navigating a world where legal and illegal don’t always match right and wrong. But Sallie Kincaid discovers her own path and triumphs. Sallie is the fiercely independent, intrepid and impulsive daughter of Duke Kincaid, the most powerful man in Claiborne County. When the Duke dies unexpectedly, Sallie is suddenly in charge of the family business. In 1920s Virginia, that’s bootlegging, but there is more involved than Sallie ever suspected. Old family members and new opportunists make their own claims to the Kincaid fortune, and Sallie’s father casts a shadow long after his death. This is a family --- and a culture --- with dark secrets, each of which Sallie must confront. Click here for the guide. HANG THE MOON is April’s pick for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites. On Wednesday, April 26th at 1pm ET, members of the S&S team will talk to Jeannette about her book. You can RSVP by clicking here. If you missed their discussion of March’s picks, Julia Kelly’s THE LOST ENGLISH GIRL and Armando Lucas Correa’s THE NIGHT TRAVELERS, featuring Julia and Armando as their special guests, you can watch it here. We also have added guides for these two books:

THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME by Laura Dave, a #1 New York Times bestseller and a Reese’s Book Club pick, released in paperback earlier this month. This Bets On selection is a gripping mystery about a woman who thinks she has found the love of her life --- until he disappears. On Friday, April 14th, the book will be adapted as a seven-episode limited series on Apple TV+ starring Jennifer Garner. The first two episodes will be available on the 14th, with the remaining five releasing every Friday until the finale on May 19th. Click here to watch the official trailer. Tickets are selling briskly, so if you would like to enjoy this bookish weekend, you will want to get on this now. The lineup of authors is truly wonderful. Alafair Burke and A. J. Finn are co-chairing the festival, and Casey Sherman is the True Crime Chair. The spotlight guests are Michael Connelly, Lisa Jewell and Anthony Horowitz. “60 Minutes” reporter Steve Kroft will be featured in conversation with former NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Featured speakers include Megan Abbott, Alison Gaylin, Greer Hendricks, Clare Mackintosh, Wanda M. Morris, Liz Nugent, Nita Prose, Riley Sager, John Searles, Alex Segura, Stacy Willingham, and many more. They are offering lots of different programming, including graveyard tours and a bus trip to visit crime scenes around the Hamptons, and Forensics World will host a Crime Scene Challenge titled “Who Killed The Mayor?” at Village Hall. There will be a realistic simulated crime scene, and participants will act as detectives examining real forensic evidence. It promises to be a really terrific weekend of mystery and crime! THE FOUR WINDS by Kristin Hannah (Historical Fiction)
Texas, 1921. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli and decides to change the direction of her life. By 1934, millions are out of work, and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Everything on the Martinelli farm is dying, including Elsa’s tenuous marriage; each day is a desperate battle against nature and a fight to keep her children alive. In this uncertain and perilous time, Elsa --- like so many of her neighbors --- must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves, or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family. - Click here to read more about the book. - Click here for the discussion guide. - Click here to read an excerpt. - Click here to read our review on Bookreporter.com. - Click here to read Carol's Bookreporter.com Bets On commentary. - Click here to visit Kristin Hannah's website. - Connect with Kristin Hannah on Facebook and Instagram. - Click here to sign up for our "Bookaccino Live" Book Group event with Kristin Hannah on Wednesday, April 26th at 8pm ET.
