May 31, 2023
May 31, 2023 Goodbye to May!I do not think I am alone in asking, "Wait, how did it get to be May 31st already?" I have been hearing it from people all day. The weather here has been spectacular --- what we call California weather. Last weekend, I finally just sat outside and read; it's been weeks since I've had the time to do that. I missed book group last week for the second time, which is not like me. Onward to share what's been going on to keep me busy... We hosted our latest “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event last night, and it was such fun. Laura Dave joined us to discuss her #1 New York Times bestseller, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that is now available in paperback and has been adapted as a limited series on Apple TV+ starring Jennifer Garner (the finale released a couple of weeks ago). Laura had the idea for this book for a while, and she wrote it from different perspectives before finding the first-person story told by Hannah that we read. She talks about how she needs time to settle in with her characters and her plot, and then turns to what serves the book most. She also shares some of the research that she did about houseboat life, as well as the scenes set in Texas. And, to the delight of our readers, she previews what’s next. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. Oh, and for the video of Jennifer Garner making Hannah’s Brown Butter & Sage Pasta that Laura mentioned last night, you can see it here on Instagram.
I am excited to tell you about a very special “Bookaccino Live” evening event. On Wednesday, June 28th at 8pm ET, I will be presenting a number of titles releasing this summer that I think you and your book group will enjoy reading and discussing. You can register for the program by clicking here.
Please note: We will not be doing any "Bookaccino Live" Book Group events in June, July or August as we know that many people are traveling. But we already have our September author scheduled. We will share more details about what promises to be a fabulous event in the next newsletter.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Linwood Barclay, whose new thriller THE LIE MAKER will be a Bets On selection. Linwood talks about the protagonist Jack’s quest to find his father, who entered the witness protection program years ago, and the interesting role with which Jack is presented. Linwood’s love of cars once again finds its way into this story. He also shares something that he has had in his desk for over 50 years and what it means to him. I think this is Linwood's best book yet…and our Bookreporter reviewer, Ray Palen, agrees with me. The pages fly by, and the ending comes at you full barrel. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We will feature my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter. A BIG Contest for Dads on Bookreporter Last Chance to Enter Our Monthly Contest Our Bookreporter reviewer Sarah Rachel Egelman raved about the book in her review, calling it “fantastic and memorable.” She went on to say, “[R]eaders find themselves immersed in Sam and Sadie’s lives. They move from coast to coast and back again, grow up, play and build together, and love each other, even when they are angry, lonely and disappointed. Zevin so wonderfully captures the search for meaning and order in an unpredictable, sometimes dangerous and often very beautiful world.” Luis Alberto Urrea is back with his first novel in five years, GOOD NIGHT, IRENE, which is June’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. Taking as inspiration his mother’s own Red Cross service, the Pulitzer Prize finalist has delivered an overlooked story of women’s heroism in World War II. In 1943, Irene Woodward enlists with the Red Cross and makes fast friends in training with Dorothy Dunford. Together they are part of an elite group of women, nicknamed Donut Dollies, who provide donuts and coffee (along with camaraderie and a taste of home) to soldiers who are heading into battle. Click here for the discussion guide. My publisher contact sent me a copy of GOOD NIGHT, IRENE, telling me that he cried at the end, which sounds like a moving endorsement. On Tuesday, July 11th at 3pm ET, Barnes & Noble will host a live virtual event with Luis Alberto Urrea. He will be joined in the discussion by Shannon DeVito, the Sr. Director of Book Strategy and Customer Experience at B&N, and Miwa Messer, B&N’s Editorial Director. Click here to sign up. Bestselling sensation Juniper Song is not who she says she is, she didn’t write the book she claims she wrote, and she is most certainly not Asian American. YELLOWFACE --- an upcoming Bets On selection --- is the much-talked-about new novel from R. F. Kuang, the award-winning author of the Poppy War trilogy and BABEL: An Arcane History. With its totally immersive first-person voice, the book grapples with questions of diversity, racism and cultural appropriation, as well as the terrifying alienation of social media. Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter. Don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter. Another future Bets On pick is Megan Abbott’s new psychological thriller, BEWARE THE WOMAN, a nightmarish glimpse at every pregnant woman’s fears about their vulnerabilities. Newly married and with a baby on the way, Jacy and her husband, Jed, embark on their first road trip together to visit his father, Dr. Ash. But shortly after arriving at the cottage, Jacy has a health scare. Suddenly, whispers about Jed’s long-dead mother seem to eerily impinge upon the present, and Jacy begins to feel trapped in the cottage. But are her fears founded? Take a look at the guide and our Bookreporter review --- and find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book in the next newsletter. We also have added guides for these three books:

TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW, AND TOMORROW by Gabrielle Zevin (Fiction)
On a bitter cold day, in the December of his junior year at Harvard, Sam Masur exits a subway car and sees, amid the hordes of people waiting on the platform, Sadie Green. He calls her name. For a moment, she pretends she hasn’t heard him, but then she turns, and a game begins: a legendary collaboration that will launch them to stardom. These friends, intimates since childhood, borrow money and beg favors --- and before even graduating college, they have created their first blockbuster, Ichigo. Overnight, the world is theirs.
