I read somewhere that last Thursday was the last time that sun would be in the sky after 8pm in the New York area. Yes, the days of summer are being whisked away.
You can just about guarantee that it will rain or be overcast the night of August 30th as I am hosting book club at my house. We will be talking about ONE ITALIAN SUMMER by Rebecca Serle, with a goal that we virtually can be swept away to Italy. Last month when we had book group here, we had a torrential storm a few hours before we met. Luckily the couches that we were going to sit on were covered. We want ONE gorgeous night where we can discuss the book IN the pool!
In the last newsletter, we brought you answers to a reader question about what to do to commemorate a book club milestone; in this case, the group was celebrating their 100th meeting. We loved seeing the ideas that were sent in.
Do you have a question that you would like to get some input on for your group? If so, send me an email at [email protected] with the subject line “RGG Question.”
We have THREE new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Naomi Hirahara, who joined me to talk about her latest mystery, EVERGREEN, which will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On selection. The story once again features Aki Ito, who readers met in CLARK AND DIVISION, which also was a Bets On title. Aki has now moved back to Los Angeles from Chicago where her family was displaced during World War II.
Naomi talks about her research for this book, some of which was drawn from relatives, as well as her work over the past decades. She explains how EVERGREEN works well as a stand-alone novel and what brought her and the publisher to call these books Japantown mysteries. I also share how they give an insightful look into this time as historical fiction, as well as a mystery. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. Don't miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
EVERGREEN continues to be the prize book in our current “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest. You have until Wednesday, September 13th at noon ET to let us know what your group is reading (or what you read last month); three lucky groups will win 12 copies.
Next up is Tracey Lange, whose second novel, THE CONNELLYS OF COUNTY DOWN, also will be a Bets On selection. Tracey talks about the Connelly siblings, what she thought was special about each of them, and how her background in behavioral health helped her in developing them and their various situations.
The themes of loyalty and love are at the core of this book, and Tracey discusses how they came together. And yes, she explains where she got all the jokes that Conor tells and the story behind the fairy tale. She also touches upon her debut novel, WE ARE THE BRENNANS, and what’s next for her. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We will feature the discussion guide and my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
Finally, I had the pleasure of speaking with Liz Nugent about her new thriller, STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND, which is a Bets On pick. Liz reminded me that we spoke back in 2017 about her debut, UNRAVELING OLIVER. It was her first interview! She explains how she developed the character of Sally. I was astonished to learn that this latest novel was not plotted, but rather written stream-of-consciousness.
Liz also talks about letters that were shared with Sally and why they worked with the copy. She notes that while there are a lot of dark things insinuated in the book, they are not written on the page. Those visuals are what come to play in the readers’ minds. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. And find out why I'm betting you'll love this book here.
TOM LAKE, Ann Patchett’s first novel in four years, is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick and Barnes & Noble Book Club selection. In this eagerly awaited new book, three sisters shelter on the family cherry farm during the pandemic and urge their mother to share details of an early romance with a now-famous actor.
Here’s what Reese says about the book: “This story follows Lara Nelson as she tells her three curious daughters about her summer romance with famous actor Peter Duke. This comforting summer read has it all --- summer theater, a gorgeous Michigan cherry farm, young love, sibling rivalry, and deep mother-daughter relationships.” Click here for the guide and here for our review on Bookreporter.
On Tuesday, September 12th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Ann Patchett. She will be joined in the discussion by Shannon DeVito, the Sr. Director of Book Strategy and Customer Experience at B&N, and Miwa Messer, the Executive Producer and host of B&N's “Poured Over” podcast. Click here to sign up.
Lisa Jewell’s newly released psychological thriller is NONE OF THIS IS TRUE, which is about two women who have just turned 45 on the same day. Alix Summer is a popular podcaster, and Josie Fair believes she would be a good subject for the podcast. Eventually, Alix learns that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets. When Josie suddenly disappears, she realizes that her life and the lives of her loved ones are in serious danger.
NONE OF THIS IS TRUE has been praised by a number of bestselling authors, including Gillian McAllister, who calls it “[a] moody, slippery novel where nobody is as they seem. As breathtaking story is revealed within story, readers peel back the layers to find revenge, a meditation on the damage done by the past, and characters who could walk into the room and sit on your sofa. Here Jewell cements her position as queen of character-led fiction.” Click here for the guide and here for our Bookreporter review.
THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE is the latest novel from James McBride, who wrote the bestselling Oprah’s Book Club pick DEACON KING KONG and the National Book Award–winning THE GOOD LORD BIRD.
The book starts in 1972 when workers in Pottstown, PA find a skeleton at the bottom of a well while digging the foundations for a new development. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, a neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side for decades. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened, and the part the town’s white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community --- heaven and earth --- that sustain us.
The aforementioned Ann Patchett sums up THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE like this: “I keep thinking every time I read one of his books, ‘That’s his best book.’ No. THIS is his best book.” High praise indeed! Click here for the guide.
In honor of the book’s 25th anniversary, Jenna Bush Hager has selected SUMMER SISTERS --- Judy Blume's adult debut --- as this month’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick. This classic novel of reminiscence and awakening is about two women, two families and the friendships that shape a lifetime.
According to Jenna, “It's about that time in your life where you're trying to figure out who you're going to be. It is the perfect, perfect beach read but that doesn't mean that it's an easy read. It's a beautiful read and it will make you think about growing up and that friend of yours who you adored, but maybe didn't know if they were good for you.”
We also have added guides for these three books:

Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. THE BLOCK PARTY by Jamie Day
and STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND by Liz Nugent
THE BLOCK PARTY by Jamie Day (Domestic Thriller)
How well do you really know your neighbors? You will be thinking about that as you read about the affluent Alton Road neighborhood where THE BLOCK PARTY is set.
When the book opens, it’s the day in May when the annual summer block party happens. Yes, people are gathering for fun, but immediately tensions start riding high. And then, just as a shot is fired and things start to get out of control, author Jamie Day shifts the action to a year earlier on Alton Road.
And poof! Whatever happened that day of the block party is well into the future. Whew! But then we start to see where these tensions may have come from.

STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND by Liz Nugent (Psychological Thriller)
I have been a fan of Liz Nugent’s books since her debut, UNRAVELING OLIVER. So when STRANGE SALLY DIAMOND got on my radar, I had a feeling that I would be in for a terrific psychological thriller. And boy, did it deliver, with a very interesting premise and execution.
As the book opens, Sally’s father has passed away, and she has followed the instructions that he told her in one of their conversations --- that after he died, she should put him out in the bin. And well, since garbage is typically burned, she takes steps to try to burn him. Readers quickly see that Sally has some challenges with taking things literally. She clocks in on the neurodiverse spectrum and does not always get an implied joke. From this action, the town is now paying attention to Sally.
