Sharing Book Group Stories
In the January 18th newsletter, I wrote about my book group and what makes our meetings so special. I then asked you to tell me about your group and share any stories you had about your discussions or how your group was formed. We heard from a number of readers and compiled their comments into a blog post that you can take a look at here.
Reading what they had to say, it’s clear that their groups mean so much to them. It’s not just about gathering to discuss a book --- it’s about making lifelong friendships and supporting each other through all of life’s highs and lows. That is exactly how I feel about my group. Right now, we are planning how to support one of our members who suddenly lost her dad recently. Book groups are very special communities.
If you would like to share anything about your group, feel free to email me with the subject line “My Group.” We will be sure to add any new comments to the blog.
Back in October, we did our first-ever LIVE “Bookreporter Talks To” interview. Our guest was William Kent Krueger, and we talked about his latest novel, THE RIVER WE REMEMBER.
We were so thrilled with the turnout and the feedback we received that we’ll be doing another live interview, this time with Kristin Hannah. She will be answering questions from those who won a copy of her newly released novel, THE WOMEN, in a contest we ran on Bookreporter last November. We plan to have some of these contest winners ask their question on camera, and I’ll be asking questions on behalf of those who are camera-shy or are unable to attend.
The event will take place on Wednesday, March 6th at 7pm ET. If you would like to attend, you can sign up by clicking here. We are looking forward to what promises to be a fun and informative evening!
THE WOMEN documents in stunning detail the largely unknown contributions of women in the Vietnam War. It will be a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick, and we plan to share the discussion guide with you in our late February newsletter, along with my Bets On commentary. In the meantime, you can read much more about the book later in this newsletter.
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Wednesday, February 28th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Shelby Van Pelt, and she will be talking about her debut novel, REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES, an instant New York Times bestseller and a “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick when it released two years ago. Fans of Fredrik Backman’s A MAN CALLED OVE will love this charming and witty exploration of friendship, reckoning and hope that traces a widow's unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Shelby a question about the book on camera during the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Shelby” by February 28th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
Sign Up for Our NEW Events Newsletter!
Speaking of events, as many of you know, we have increased the number of virtual events that we are offering to readers over the past few years. We have a rather huge invite list that has become unwieldy to write via regular email. So we now have an Events newsletter, which we plan to send around the first of the month. While we mention our events in the Reading Group Guides newsletter, if you want to plan a couple of months ahead, sign up here for our new Events newsletter. It will come from [email protected], so be sure to drop that address in your address book.
Hank Phillippi Ryan’s new psychological thriller, ONE WRONG WORD, explores the insidious nature of gossip, scandal and lies --- and how careers, friendships and even marriages can be shattered forever. I loved this book so much that it’s my latest Bets On selection, and we will feature my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Hank in the next newsletter.
Our Bookreporter reviewer Pamela Kramer had wonderful things to say about the book: “Hank Phillippi Ryan is a master at throwing curve balls that completely change our field of vision. We thought she was leading us in one direction, but as it turns out, she was providing clues that take us not only on a different path but to a different state entirely.... The final twist is truly unexpected, and we ultimately are appreciative of the engrossing tale and the nail-biting ending.” I so agree! Read the full review here and access the guide here.
Tia Williams’ novel, SEVEN DAYS IN JUNE, was an instant New York Times bestseller and a Reese’s Book Club pick when it released in 2021. Her long-awaited new book, A LOVE SONG FOR RICKI WILDE, is set against the backdrop of modern Harlem and Renaissance glamour. It’s a swoon-worthy love story of two passionate artists drawn to the magic, romance and opportunity of New York, and whose lives are uniquely and irreversibly linked.
According to our Bookreporter reviewer Rebecca Munro, “To read Tia Williams is to read pure joy, unabashed and proud. Even when she is detailing the racist history of our country…her willingness and courage to find beauty in transformation is awe-inspiring…. Williams’ writing is...a fresh and modern take on love and creation that is grounded in immense, sweeping history. The blending of these idiosyncratic tones reads like her love song to readers.” Check out more of Rebecca’s thoughts on the book in her review, and click here for the guide.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
GOOD MATERIAL: Dolly Alderton’s new novel is February’s “Read with Jenna” and Barnes & Noble Book Club picks. Jenna says, “I’ve never read anything quite like it --- it’s the unwinding of a love story. And yet, there’s so much love in it.” On Tuesday, March 5th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Dolly, which you can sign up for here.
-
COME AND GET IT: Kiley Reid’s highly anticipated second novel (following her debut, SUCH A FUN AGE, which was a Reese’s Book Club pick) is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club selection. This fresh and intimate portrait of desire, consumption and reckless abandon is a tension-filled story about money, indiscretion and bad behavior.
-
REDWOOD COURT: Award-winning poet DéLana R. A. Dameron’s debut novel is Reese’s Book Club pick for February. Here’s how Reese describes the book: “It’s set in the 1990s, and it’s a collection of vignettes all centered around this southern Black family told from the youngest daughter’s point of view. It’s all about home and a sense of belonging.”
-
BELONGING: Jill Fordyce’s debut novel is about first love and heartbreak, friendship and secrets, family and forgiveness, hometowns and coming of age, memory and music. The heart of the story is Jenny’s struggle to undo the binds of a childhood that have deeply affected her life, the painful path to love endured by children raised in alcoholic families, and the grim reality of believing you must hide a part of yourself in order to belong.
CAMP ZERO by first-time novelist Michelle Min Sterling was an instant New York Times bestseller and a “Read with Jenna” pick when it published last year. In anticipation of its February 20th release in paperback, the book is this month’s selection for Simon & Schuster’s Book Club Favorites. On Tuesday, February 27th at 1pm ET, members of the S&S team will talk to Michelle about CAMP ZERO. You can RSVP by clicking here.
If you missed their discussion of January’s pick, THE STORM WE MADE, featuring Vanessa Chan as their special guest, you can watch it here.

REDWOOD COURT by DéLana R. A. Dameron (Fiction)
On Redwood Court, the cul-de-sac in the all-Black working-class suburb of Columbia, South Carolina, where her grandparents live, Mika Tabor learns important lessons from the people who raise her: her exhausted parents, who work long hours at multiple jobs while still making sure their kids experience the adventure of family vacations; her older sister, who in a house filled with Motown would rather listen to Alanis Morrisette; her retired grandparents, children of Jim Crow, who realized their own vision of success when they bought their house on the Court in the 1960s, imagining it filled with future generations; and the many neighbors who hold tight to the community they’ve built, committed to fostering joy and love in an America so insistent on seeing Black people stumble and fall.

THE FURY by Alex Michaelides
THE FURY by Alex Michaelides (Psychological Thriller)
When I started reading THE FURY by Alex Michaelides, it was a blustery cold weekend. I was more than ready for a vacation on a privately owned Greek island named Aura with a movie star and her friends. The island had been given to the actress as a wedding present from her now-deceased husband. I loved that sentiment. So I settled in to be told a story from the perspective of Elliot Chase, our narrator.
The setup is lovely. Lana Farrar (great name) is an ex-movie star (if there is anyone who is an ex-movie star; I feel like that title just lives on) who is at Aura with her friends. Elliot introduces the characters, all from his point of view. As he narrates, he will do his best “not to hijack the narrative too often.” When he does not succeed, we get a major helping of dishy background.
