Book Group...How We Love It
My book group is celebrating six years this month, and we are really proud to hit this number. Except for me, my book club is made up of women in their 40s. When we started, many of their children were in nursery school or just starting school. I love hearing stories about their children, as well as their thoughts about books. We typically talk about what we are reading outside the group as well. Many of them, myself included, have said that it is their favorite night of the month.
I hope that you find that same joy with your book group!
For this month, we are reading THE MATCHMAKER’S GIFT, which Julia in our group loved and suggested. Lynda Cohen Loigman will be joining us for the discussion, which we are looking forward to.
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place next Wednesday, April 24th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Kate Morton, and she will be talking about her novel, HOMECOMING, which is now available in paperback. A New York Times bestseller and a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick when it first released last year, this sweeping novel begins with a shocking crime, the effects of which echo across continents and generations.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you would like to ask Kate a question about the book on camera during the event, please email me with your question using the subject line “Kate” by April 24th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
Our Most Popular Book Group Selections from March’s Monthly Contest
In our most recent “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest, where we gave away copies of HOMECOMING, here are the five books mentioned most frequently by book groups that they have read: THE WOMEN by Kristin Hannah, THE HEAVEN & EARTH GROCERY STORE by James McBride, LADY TAN'S CIRCLE OF WOMEN by Lisa See, THE FROZEN RIVER by Ariel Lawhon, and THE RIVER WE REMEMBER by William Kent Krueger. Scroll further down the newsletter to see the Top 15.
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Megan Miranda, who returns to “Bookreporter Talks To” to discuss her new thriller, DAUGHTER OF MINE. Here, Megan shares her inspiration for the novel, which will be a Bets On selection, as well as insight into her creative process. She also explains how she laid out the twists that make this story so special. Megan loves the narrator of the audio edition, Inés del Castillo, as she feels Inés sets the right tone for the book. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
We are featuring the discussion guide here and our review on Bookreporter here. Also, be sure to check out Megan's book tour schedule on her website to see if she'll be at a bookstore or library near you. And find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book in the next newsletter.
I also spoke with Simone Gorrindo about her debut memoir, THE WIVES, an upcoming Bets On pick for which we are featuring the guide. Simone explains how she found her way to writing this book when her husband, an Army Special Ops team member, was assigned to a base in Columbus, Georgia. There she found herself with a group of women who had followed their husbands to this area. These wives had one thing in common: their husbands and their work as soldiers.
When the men left town, the women would gather together for support, and any of the typical social lines between them would drop as they commiserated about both their day-to-day lives and the larger role that their husbands were playing on a bigger stage. Simone shares where their lives went after the book ends and what it was like narrating her own story. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We will share links to our Bookreporter review and my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
Ten years after the release of her debut novel, THE GOOD GIRL, Mary Kubica is back with a new psychological thriller. In SHE’S NOT SORRY, a woman arrives at the ICU in a coma with a traumatic brain injury after plunging over 20 feet from a bridge, and an ICU nurse starts to unravel her patient’s frightening past. But when shocking details about the fall surface, the facts are called into question. Did this woman fall or jump? Or was she pushed? And if so, why and by whom? And who is this woman really? Click here for the guide.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
THE SICILIAN INHERITANCE: Jo Piazza’s dual-timeline novel follows Sara Marsala, a newly divorced restaurateur, as she travels to her ancestor’s village in Sicily to claim a potential inheritance. While visiting, she learns that her great-grandmother may have been murdered there a century ago and that she may be in danger too.
-
THE HUSBANDS: Holly Gramazio’s debut novel is April’s Top LibraryReads Pick and the latest “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club selection. Jenna calls the book “equal parts humor and love story.” She goes on to say, “I love the concept. I think it's a commentary on swiping and dating in the modern world.”
-
THE MOST FUN WE EVER HAD: Claire Lombardo’s 2019 debut novel is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick. Reese describes the book using these words: Sisters. Emotional. Messy (in the best way). Complicated relationships. Character-driven. She says, “This book truly feels like you’re a fly on the wall watching a real family interact.”
-
THE CEMETERY OF UNTOLD STORIES: Julia Alvarez’s new novel asks: Whose stories get to be told, and whose buried? The celebrated writer at the heart of this book finds the meaning that she and her characters yearn for in the everlasting vitality of stories. Alvarez reminds us that the stories of our lives are never truly finished, even at the end.
April’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick is Abby Jimenez’s new romantic comedy, JUST FOR THE SUMMER. Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. It's supposed to be a quick fling, just for the summer. But you know what they say about the best-laid plans?
Leif Enger’s latest novel, I CHEERFULLY REFUSE, is this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. In this tale set in a not-too-distant America, a bereaved and pursued musician embarks under sail in search of his departed, deeply beloved, bookselling wife. According to the publisher, the book is “a symphony against despair and a rallying cry for the future.” On Wednesday, May 8th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with the author, which you can sign up for here.
For more April selections, including the Indie Next and LibraryReads lists, see our “Favorite Monthly Lists & Picks” feature here.

For decades, Nick Burns has been haunted by a decision he made as a young soldier in World War I, when a French artist he’d befriended thrust both her paintings and her baby into his hands --- and disappeared. In 1974, with only months left to live, Nick enlists Jenny, a college dropout desperate for adventure, to help him unravel the mystery.
The journey leads them from Paris galleries and provincial towns to a surprising place: the Museum of Tears, the life’s work of a lonely Italian craftsman. Determined to find the baby and the artist, hopeless romantic Jenny and curmudgeonly Nick must reckon with regret, betrayal and the lives they’ve left behind.

WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA? by Dervla McTiernan
WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA? by Dervla McTiernan (Psychological Thriller/Mystery)
I love reading true crime books, and I have been known to go down the rabbit hole on many a Netflix true crime series. (Oddly, I do not gravitate to true crime podcasts.) So it probably is not surprising that crime fiction in this vein will call my name. WHAT HAPPENED TO NINA? by Dervla McTiernan drew me in from the description.
Nina and her boyfriend, Simon, head off to his family’s 400-acre estate in Vermont for spring break. Now, mind you, this property is located in the same state as the palatial home of Simon’s family. Yes, we are talking that kind of family money. Nina and Simon spend the day climbing, which they both enjoy. But something happens on one of the climbs that worries Nina.
