The end of September means that we are settled into fall patterns. We are working on our fall/holiday plans for interviews, events and programs. We also are attending publisher previews where we hear about the winter/spring titles ahead --- and we are excited about so many books. But we have lots to share with you now in this update, so let's get started.
Last Tuesday night, Shelley Read joined our “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program to talk about her international bestseller, GO AS A RIVER, which was a Bookreporter.com Bets On title when it released in February 2023. As this was a book group-style discussion, we did talk spoilers. Four audience members joined us to ask Shelley questions, all of which looked at the novel from different angles.
Shelley shared her inspiration for the book and how she created her characters. She talked about prejudice and how it influenced her work. As a fifth-generation Coloradan, she explained how that history in her family gave her a perspective on her writing. The conversation was insightful, and readers clearly were passionate about GO AS A RIVER. Click here to watch the event or here to listen to the podcast.
It was a wonderful evening. We are so glad that Shelley was able to join the group. I already had interviewed her when the book came out, and it was lovely to delve more into the story here.
I am excited to announce that Amanda Peters will be our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest. The event will be held on Tuesday, October 29th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up here for it. We will talk about her national bestseller, THE BERRY PICKERS, which was a Bets On selection when it came out last year and will release in paperback on the day of the event. A four-year-old Mi’kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a mystery that will haunt the survivors, unravel a family, and remain unsolved for nearly 50 years.
Just as we did last Tuesday night, there will be a two-part Q&A session after I talk to Amanda. For the first part, those who are asking a question on camera will be featured. This includes spending time with Amanda backstage in our virtual green room before the show starts. If you would like to ask your question "live on screen" this way, please email me with the subject line "Amanda" by noon ET on October 29th. Be sure to include your name, city and state, as well as your question. If you do not want to appear on camera but still would like to ask a question, please note that you want to be off camera, and share your question --- adding your name, city and state.
We hosted a special “Bookaccino Live” Fall Preview evening program a couple of weeks ago. I presented 55 books that are either out now or soon to be released this fall that we think you will enjoy reading over the next few months. Included are fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction. Click here to watch the presentation and here to see a list of the titles that I talked about. We will be doing a Winter Preview evening program in January!
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Laura Dave, whose new novel, THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM, is October’s #1 Indie Next pick and will be a Bets On selection. It also is an instant New York Times bestseller!
At the heart of this story is a secret that has been hidden for years --- one that may have caused the death of Liam Noone, a successful hotel magnate. Nora, his daughter from one of his marriages, is convinced by Sam, his son from another marriage, to join together to see if his death was accidental or something more sinister. Laura talks about Liam’s unique hotel properties and what inspired them, and how research finds its way into her work. She also shares her writing schedule and how she manages her day, as well as the song she had on repeat as she wrote, which is something she always does.
This is Laura's second thriller. Her first, THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, was adapted by Laura and her husband into a series for Apple TV+. She talks about future screenwriting projects, as well as the book that readers can look forward to next year. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
We also are featuring the discussion guide and our Bookreporter review --- and don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
Nicholas Sparks pens heartfelt love stories with surprise endings. His 24th novel, COUNTING MIRACLES, will move readers once again with a story about second chances and making a home for yourself. As the fates of the book’s characters orbit closer together, none of them is expecting a miracle...but that may be exactly what is about to alter their futures forever.
Here’s what Shelf Awareness says about the book: “[Sparks] once again delivers an uplifting, heartfelt story emblematic of his literary trademarks: a North Carolina setting, strong romantic elements, and a surprise, bittersweet ending…. Readers will be swept up in another emotionally resonant, adventurous journey that maps the peaks and valleys of human existence and how love, in its many forms, can miraculously heal loss and loneliness, grief and grave uncertainty.” Click here for the guide.
Tami Hoag has been absent from the writing scene for years after suffering an injury that had her off the grid for quite some time. So it’s great to see Tami make a triumphant return with the release of her long-awaited new thriller, BAD LIAR.
The book opens with a murder victim being dumped at the end of a deserted road in Louisiana. He was shot in his face and hands, making it difficult to identify him. At the same time, Marc Mercier has disappeared after going on a weekend hunting trip. Also missing is another young man, Robbie Fontenot, a former addict whose mother is desperate to find him. These three cases are being handled by sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade and his wife, fellow detective Annie Broussard. Click here for the guide and here for my Bets On commentary.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-

-
THE WILDES: Louis Bayard brings Oscar Wilde’s wife, Constance, and their two sons out from the shadows of history and creates a vivid and poignant story of secrets, loss and love. According to the publisher, “THE WILDES could almost have been created by Oscar Wilde himself.”

We continue to feature the guide for THE PATH BENEATH HER FEET by Janis Robinson Daly, an emotionally charged sequel to THE UNLOCKED PATH. New York Times bestselling author Kathleen Grissom says, “[W]e continue to learn about remarkable early women doctors. Meticulously researched and beautifully written, Janis Robinson Daly gives us the story of a life well lived. Kudos to the author for this compassionate look at these extraordinary women, brought to life through the fictional Dr. Eliza Edwards.”
On Bookreporter, we are hosting a special contest for Sharon Virts’ third novel, THE GRAYS OF TRUTH, following MASQUE OF HONOR and VEIL OF DOUBT. This gripping tale of murder and deceit is inspired by true events involving one of Baltimore’s most powerful families.
In anticipation of the book’s October 29th publication, we are awarding an advance copy to 25 readers. To enter, please fill out this form by Friday, October 11th at noon ET. We also have added THE GRAYS OF TRUTH to Bookreporter’s Fall Reading feature. During the week of its release, we will be giving five more readers the chance to win a copy.
Sharon is a terrific writer who does a brilliant job of drawing readers into the time period in which her mystery is set. When I pick up one of her books, I always find myself getting so absorbed in the story that I am on page 60 before I know it.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…
