I love listening to memoirs. There is something about hearing an author share his or her story that makes it so much more personal. Recently I finished Ina Garten's BE READY WHEN THE LUCK HAPPENS, along with Lisa Marie Presley and Riley Keough's FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN (more on the latter later in this newsletter), which is narrated by tapes of Lisa Marie, plus Riley and Julia Roberts.
From Ina, I got some terrific business advice. I guess that was the luck that happened for me personally from reading it. From Lisa Marie and Riley, I saw another side of the world of fame, told often from the eyes of each of them as children. I could picture the golf carts running all over Graceland. NDAs on the kitchen counter for people to sign? That was new to me!
Both books made running errands and doing outdoor activities like trimming the hydrangeas and dragging the leaves from the pool so much less mundane. Up next may be Stanley Tucci's new book, WHAT I ATE IN ONE YEAR.
My book group is reading Chris Whitaker's ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK for November. While I read the book, I listened to part of Edoardo Ballerini's narration of it. It is brilliant!
We will be hosting our 13 ½ Annual Book Group Speed Dating event on Friday, November 8th at 1pm ET. If you are a bookseller, librarian or book group leader, and would be interested in attending this event, please email me using the subject line “Speed Dating.” In your note, tell me a bit about yourself and what you do with book groups. This is a “trade only” event, but we will be sharing the publisher videos, PowerPoint slides and other materials with you later in November.
This is your last ReadingGroupGuides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Tuesday, October 29th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Amanda Peters, and she will be talking about her national bestseller, THE BERRY PICKERS, a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that releases in paperback on the day of the event. A four-year-old Mi’kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a mystery that will haunt the survivors, unravel a family and remain unsolved for nearly 50 years.
You can register for the event by clicking here. If you have a question for Amanda, please email it to me using the subject line “Amanda” by October 29th at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Amanda the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Amanda in our virtual green room before the program starts.
It has been a long time since we surveyed our readers. We know that much has changed over the past few years, so we thought now would be a great time to reach out to you and ask some questions.
The results of our 2024 Reader Survey will help us determine how to enhance your experiences with Reading Group Guides, Bookreporter and our programs, especially as we look ahead to 2025.
We are awarding three readers who finish the survey a $50 gift card to the bookstore of their choice, while five others will be selected to win a book from our shelves.
Click here to take the survey by THIS FRIDAY, October 18th at noon ET.
Our Latest Monthly Contest is Live!
Our new “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest book is THE FROZEN RIVER by Ariel Lawhon, a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick and an NPR Book of the Year that releases in paperback on November 5th.
Here's the premise: As a midwife and healer in 1789 Maine, Martha Ballard is good at keeping secrets. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, every murder and debacle that unfolds in the town of Hallowell. In that diary she also documented the details of an alleged rape that occurred four months earlier. Now, one of the men accused of that heinous attack has been found dead in the ice. While Martha is certain she knows what happened the night of the assault, she suspects that the two crimes are linked.
Three groups will win up to 12 paperback copies of THE FROZEN RIVER. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, November 13th at noon ET.
Many of you have been talking about this book since it came out in hardcover last December. This prize will give more of you a chance to explore it with your group!
Also, we will be sharing some exciting news about an event with Ariel in the next newsletter, so please be on the lookout for that!
The aforementioned FROM HERE TO THE GREAT UNKNOWN is Oprah’s latest Book Club pick. Born to an American myth and raised in the wilds of Graceland, Lisa Marie Presley tells her whole story for the first time in this raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir faithfully completed by her daughter, Riley Keough, following her death in January 2023.
Oprah says, “I have great love and admiration for Lisa Marie Presley, and was so moved that her daughter Riley, through her grief, was able to help her finish a beautifully touching memoir that allows us to see her mother at her most honest and vulnerable. This is an intimate look at what it was like growing up as heir to one of America’s most famous families.”
Last Tuesday night, CBS aired “An Oprah Special: The Presleys — Elvis, Lisa Marie, and Riley”, where Oprah traveled to Graceland to talk to Riley. She opened up about her mother’s death, her grandfather’s legacy and the process for writing this book. If you missed the show, which I really enjoyed, you can watch it here.
Riley also appeared on “CBS Mornings” with Oprah last week to talk about the book. Click here to watch the segment. And if you’d like to read along with Oprah’s Book Club, you can do so by following the schedule on this page.
In THE MIGHTY RED, which is this month’s “Read with Jenna” Today Show Book Club pick, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich tells a story of love, natural forces, spiritual yearnings and the tragic impact of uncontrollable circumstances on ordinary people’s lives. Jenna says, “This is a book about family and community. It is a book about upward mobility and finding our true passions. You will love Kismet.”
Norah Piehl has this to say in her review on Bookreporter: “Some of the elements of Erdrich’s prior novels, especially her most recent work, that have stuck with me months or even years later are those that address the environment, the climate and the land. So I was pleased to discover that, although THE MIGHTY RED is in many ways a deeply intimate story about the intertwined lives of individuals and families, it also has geography at its center.”
THE MIGHTY RED is also this month’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick. On Tuesday, November 12th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Louise, which you can sign up for here.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Jean Hanff Korelitz, whose new book, THE SEQUEL, is the aptly titled follow-up to THE PLOT and will be a Bets On selection. Anna, the widow of Jacob Finch Bonner, is enjoying the riches of being a literary widow and has written a debut novel called The Afterword. But, ah, Anna has a secret to hide.
Jean shares the fun she had layering wry humor into the book, as well as how she satirizes the publishing industry in juicy detail. Yes, there is film news talk, as well as what’s next for Jean. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. We also are featuring the discussion guide and our Bookreporter review. And don’t miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
On the cusp of turning 80, newly retired pharmacist Augusta Stern is adrift in Lynda Cohen Loigman’s new book, THE LOVE ELIXIR OF AUGUSTA STERN. When she relocates to Rallentando Springs, an active senior community in southern Florida, Augusta unexpectedly crosses paths with Irving Rivkin, the delivery boy from her father’s old pharmacy --- and the man who broke her heart 60 years earlier.
Pamela Kramer has our Bookreporter review and says, “THE LOVE ELIXIR OF AUGUSTA STERN works perfectly. The details, the history and the alternating chapters flow seamlessly together. Loigman's ability to describe people is also spot-on. We can picture the other residents at the retirement community as we read their physical descriptions and are privy to their actions and words.” Click here for the guide.
INTERMEZZO is Sally Rooney’s new novel about grief, love and family --- but especially love. Two grieving brothers and the people they love experience a new interlude --- a period of desire, despair and possibility; a chance to find out how much one life might hold inside itself without breaking.
According to Bookreporter’s Harvey Freedenberg in his review, “INTERMEZZO feels as timeless as a classic 19th-century novel and as contemporary as the latest cultural trend. After the publication of only four novels, it would be foolish to suggest that Sally Rooney has already reached some sort of career peak. What the book does signal is that readers can depend on her to produce thoughtful, satisfying fiction for many years to come.” Click here for the guide.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
THE PUZZLE BOX: In this sequel to Danielle Trussoni’s THE PUZZLE MASTER, puzzle master Mike Brink has been summoned to Tokyo to unlock the legendary Dragon Box, a complex 19th-century puzzle that has baffled experts for more than a century and a half (oftentimes with deadly consequences). Mike's quest to unravel this mystery leads him on a high-stakes journey throughout Japan.
-
SOCIETY OF LIES: Lauren Ling Brown’s debut novel is Reese’s Book Club pick for October. Here’s how Reese describes the book: “This gripping thriller follows Maya as she returns to Princeton for her sister’s graduation, only to be thrust into a chilling mystery surrounding her sister’s death and a secret society she knows all too well. If you’re looking for a page-turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat this spooky season, this one is a must-read!”
-
A SONG TO DROWN RIVERS: Ann Liang’s latest novel is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. Inspired by the legend of Xishi, one of the famous Four Beauties of Ancient China, the book is steeped in myth about womanhood, war, sacrifice and love against all odds as the fate of two kingdoms hangs in a delicate balance. Shelley Parker-Chan says, “Liang has given us a new classic that achingly captures the will of kings, the intelligence of women, and the heartbreak of war.”
-
SHRED SISTERS: Spanning two decades, Betsy Lerner’s debut novel --- which was longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize --- is an intimate and bittersweet story exploring the fierce complexities of sisterhood, mental health, loss and love. If anything is true, it’s what one of the characters learns on her road to self-acceptance: No one will love you more or hurt you more than a sister.
For more October selections, including the Indie Next and LibraryReads lists, see our “Favorite Monthly Lists & Picks” feature here. As we noted in the last newsletter, THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM by Laura Dave, which is my latest Bets On selection, is this month's #1 Indie Next pick.

THE FROZEN RIVER by Ariel Lawhon (Historical Mystery)
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine the cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community.
Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen --- one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own.
Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie.
Clever, layered and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. THE FROZEN RIVER is a thrilling, tense and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.

October's #1 Indie Next Pick
THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM by Laura Dave (Domestic Thriller/Mystery)
As she did with THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME, Laura Dave hits all the right notes with THE NIGHT WE LOST HIM. In it, family patriarch Liam Noone is found dead at the bottom of a cliff near the craftsman home on the California coast that he loved. He was a hotel magnate who developed properties that were both high-end and eco-friendly. While Liam’s death is first ruled an accident, one of his sons thinks that there was nothing accidental about it. He enlists the help of his half-sister, who very reluctantly joins him. Their investigation leads them deeper and deeper into their father’s life --- and the people closest to him. As Sam and Nora explore what happened, they have as tentative a relationship as Hannah and Bailey did in THE LAST THING HE TOLD ME.
