How many of us have books that we remember with fondness? Just thinking about them brings up thoughts of characters loved, places that evoke special feelings, and situations that can be unwrapped in different ways, depending on where we are in our lives. They may be books that we recalled reading with our book groups, or books that we enjoyed on our own.
Here's something special about a book that I know many of you have loved.
This month marks the 10th anniversary of the original publication of Kristin Hannah’s THE NIGHTINGALE, the #1 New York Times bestseller and Wall Street Journal Best Book of the Year. The book tells the stories of two sisters, each of whom embarks on her own dangerous path toward survival, love and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France.
In honor of this milestone, a stunning deluxe limited edition of the book will release this Tuesday, February 18th. It features a hardcover jacket with foil and embossing, gorgeous designed edges, a ribbon bookmark, exclusive four-color endpapers, and a decorative, gold foil stamp on the front case.
Kristin will be in Culver City on Tuesday and Santa Barbara on Thursday to celebrate this very special release. And YES, signed books will be available! Find out all the details about these events by clicking on the preceding links. In the meantime, be sure to check out this video where an excited Kristin talks about the 10th anniversary edition, which she had just received in the mail.

You can register for the event by clicking here. If you have a question for Lisa, please email it to me using the subject line “Shelterwood” by February 26th at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Lisa the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Lisa in our virtual green room before the program starts.

My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Joseph Finder, whose new book, THE OLIGARCH’S DAUGHTER, will be a Bets On pick. In this breakneck thriller, a young hedge funder falls for an attractive woman he meets at a party who turns out to be the daughter of a Russian oligarch.
Joe talks about writing the novel’s two time frames and how the awareness of what oligarchs are has become a lot more timely in the past few years. He did some wilderness training for part of the book and then jumped at the chance to learn more about superyachts that are owned by the uber-wealthy. Joe explains the process of building his characters and what drives them. He also shares what’s next for him. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. Don't miss my Bets On commentary in the next newsletter.
Marie Benedict is back with her latest novel, THE QUEENS OF CRIME, which will be a Bets On selection. This time, she tells the thrilling story of the five greatest women writers of the Golden Age of Mystery --- Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Margery Allingham and Baroness Emma Orczy --- and their bid to solve a real-life murder.
Here’s what Rebecca Munro says about the book in her Bookreporter review: “[Benedict] crafts characters who live and breathe on the page --- employing their known histories, but also her own fictional flair --- to make every discovery, every clue and every red herring feel as immediate and real as the very book in your hands.... Equal parts historical fiction and compelling whodunit, THE QUEENS OF CRIME is Marie Benedict at her best, a lively takedown of the patriarchy backed by real-world examples and true grit.” Click here for the full review and here for the discussion guide.
We will feature my “Bookreporter Talks To” interview with Marie, along with my Bets On commentary, in the next newsletter.
Reese’s Book Club pick for February is ISOLA by Allegra Goodman, which finds a 16th-century orphaned French noblewoman and her lover marooned on an island. Reese raves, “I can’t stop talking about it! Based on a true story, ISOLA has it all: love, resilience, defiance... I mean, she even fights a bear! This is easily one of my favorite historical fiction reads yet.”
Jana Siciliano has our review on Bookreporter and calls ISOLA “a stunning achievement that rivals Alexandre Dumas' and Victor Hugo's classic tales of adventure, survival and political intrigue. This gorgeous book by Allegra Goodman is about a woman who discovers her boldness and strength as the natural world around her reveals its most stinging and beautiful secrets. It is a story of woman vs. nature that will have readers riveted until the very last page.” Click here for the full review and here for the guide.
THIS IS A LOVE STORY by Jessica Soffer is February’s Barnes & Noble and “Read with Jenna” book club picks.
Jenna says, “In this beautiful book, we meet Abe and Jane who, upon the end of their life, are recounting their love story as a way to keep their memories alive. We find out both the beautiful things that tied them together, but also the more difficult ones that threaten to tear them apart. This is a book about marriage and devotion.” She adds, “If you want to fall in love with New York, pick up this book.”
On Tuesday, March 4th at 3pm ET, B&N will host a live virtual event with Jessica, which you can sign up for here. In the meantime, click here for the guide.
This month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick is JUNIE. In Erin Crosby Eckstine’s debut novel, a young girl named Junie must face a life-altering decision after awakening her sister’s ghost, navigating truths about love, friendship and power as the Civil War looms. As Junie grapples with an increasingly unfamiliar world in which she has little control, she is forced to ask herself: When we choose love and liberation, what must we leave behind?
Charmaine Wilkerson, whose books GOOD DIRT and BLACK CAKE are this month’s picks for the PBS Books Readers Club, says, “The richly textured prose quickly pulled me into the protagonist’s treacherous yet magical world. I was drawn to the story of Junie, an enslaved teenager with a love of books and nature who must navigate difficult truths about her family and friendships in order to survive her times.” Click here for the guide.
For more February selections, including the Indie Next and LibraryReads lists, see our “Favorite Monthly Lists & Picks” feature here.
We also have added guides for these three books:
-
HARLEM RHAPSODY: Victoria Christopher Murray, the bestselling coauthor (with the aforementioned Marie Benedict) of THE PERSONAL LIBRARIAN and THE FIRST LADIES, has written her first solo historical novel. The book profiles Jessie Redmon Fauset, the “literary midwife” who discovered and nurtured literary giants like Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston --- all while having an affair and love story with civil rights legend (and her boss) W.E.B. Du Bois. I have this one on my list of books to read!
-
THE DOLLHOUSE ACADEMY: Margarita Montimore, whose previous novels include OONA OUT OF ORDER (a “GMA” Book Club pick) and ACTS OF VIOLET, returns with a must-read thriller about two best friends and aspiring actresses who are recruited to an elite boarding school for young performers. But threatening anonymous messages lead one of them to uncover the dark, secretive underbelly of the Dollhouse Academy’s star machine.
-
UNSHACKLED: In Amanda DuBois' third legal thriller/mystery, following THE COMPLICATION and DELIVER THEM FROM EVIL, attorney Camille Delaney takes on the case of a baby who was kidnapped from the labor and delivery suite while her mother, a prisoner, was shackled to her bed. Camille’s investigation takes her into the criminal system where she learns about the impact on kids of incarcerated moms.

GOOD DIRT by Charmaine Wilkerson,
PRESUMED GUILTY by Scott Turow,
and DEAR SISTER by Michelle Horton
GOOD DIRT by Charmaine Wilkerson (Fiction)
I was a huge fan of Charmaine Wilkerson’s first novel, BLACK CAKE. So when I heard that she had a new book coming out, I was looking forward to reading it. I am happy to share that GOOD DIRT is another powerful work of fiction that spans generations. Charmaine has a beautiful way of telling a family story, filling it with emotion and history.
Ebby Freeman is at the heart of the book. As a young girl, she witnessed her brother being killed in a home invasion, but she holds back from revealing everything she saw that day. For years, she is looked upon as “the poor Freeman girl,” and what happened to her is whispered about. Ebby already stands out as the stunningly beautiful Black woman in her affluent, all-white neighborhood. All this history makes the pain of being left at the altar on the day of her wedding at her family home that much sadder. She stumbles through life for a while before jetting off to France to get away from it all. But even there Ebby’s past follows her.

PRESUMED GUILTY by Scott Turow (Legal Thriller)
PRESUMED GUILTY is Scott Turow’s third book featuring Rusty Sabich as his protagonist. Many of us remember reading PRESUMED INNOCENT and INNOCENT, so I was happy to catch up with this iconic character again.
Rusty is now 77, living in a quiet town and working his way towards retirement. He’s in a relationship with a woman he wants to marry, and life is looking good. Bea has a son, Aaron, who she adopted as a baby. Aaron has been through some tough times, but he’s getting his life in gear and on the right track. Until he’s charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Mae, the daughter of the local prosecutor. Aaron is a Black man being brought up in an all-white community --- and prejudice will rear its head here.

DEAR SISTER: A Memoir of Secrets, Survival, and Unbreakable Bonds by Michelle Horton (Memoir)
I read DEAR SISTER last fall as I prepared for an interview at the Morristown Festival of Books with its author, Michelle Horton. I always thought that if a person killed someone in self-defense, he or she would be acquitted. I was so far off the mark.
Michelle writes about her sister, Nikki, who was in an abusive relationship for nine years. When her partner went to shoot Nikki and himself, which would make their children orphans, Nikki grabbed the gun and shot him. She had hidden the abuse from her family, masking it with long sleeves and excuses for her various wounds. But she confided in friends who were there to support her.
