Time for a Book Group Checkup
Although it has been years since I had children headed back to school, I always see the weeks after Labor Day as a chance to reset. It’s a great time for your book group to stop and take a look at what you are doing. We call it the Book Group Checkup. It's an opportunity for your group to do a self-check to be sure that your goals are still being met. Years ago, we created some questions for a Book Group Checkup. You can find them here, along with feedback that a few groups shared in the past.
This is your last Reading Group Guides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place next Thursday, September 25th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Amy Neff, and she will be talking about her debut novel, THE DAYS I LOVED YOU MOST, an international bestseller and a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick that released in paperback this summer.
If you have a question for Amy, please email it to me using the subject line “Amy” by September 25th at noon ET. Be sure to also include your name, city and state, and indicate if you’d like to be on camera during the event so you can ask Amy the question yourself, or if you’d prefer me to ask it for you. Those who appear on camera will be able to chat with Amy in our virtual green room before the program starts.
Marie Benedict has been a longtime favorite with book groups as she tells fascinating stories of women in history who have been overlooked or forgotten. So we are excited to announce a HUGE contest that we know you and your group will love.
The Grand Prize will be all eight of Marie’s solo historical novels --- THE OTHER EINSTEIN, CARNEGIE’S MAID, THE ONLY WOMAN IN THE ROOM, LADY CLEMENTINE, THE MYSTERY OF MRS. CHRISTIE, HER HIDDEN GENIUS, THE MITFORD AFFAIR and THE QUEENS OF CRIME --- along with her novella, AGENT 355, which released as an Audible Original in 2020 and is now available in a print edition.
Three runners-up will receive up to 12 copies of Marie’s most recent novel, THE QUEENS OF CRIME, for their group.
Be sure to submit your entries by Wednesday, October 8th at noon ET. If you know anyone who you think would be interested in winning these books, may we ask that you send them this link so they can enter?
Our “What’s Your Book Group Reading This Month?” contest is back! The prize book is THE BLUE HOUR by Paula Hawkins, an instant New York Times bestseller, a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick, and a Bets On selection that releases in paperback on September 30th.
Here's the premise: An isolated Scottish island, accessible to the mainland only 12 hours a day. A famous (some might say infamous) artist whose notoriously unfaithful husband disappeared after visiting her 20 years ago. A present-day discovery that intimately connects three people and unveils a web of secrets and lies.
Three groups will win up to 12 paperback copies of THE BLUE HOUR. To enter, please fill out the form on this page by Wednesday, October 8th at noon ET.
I interviewed Paula when the book came out in hardcover last year. If you missed it, you can watch our conversation here or listen to it here. Also, we will be sharing some exciting news about an upcoming event with Paula in the next newsletter.
You have until next Wednesday, September 24th at noon ET to enter our contest for THE LIBRARIANS OF LISBON by Suzanne Nelson, which we talked about in the last newsletter. We’re giving away 25 copies of the book, which has been praised by a number of well-known authors since its release in February.
Kristin Harmel says, “In THE LIBRARIANS OF LISBON, two best friends from Boston are recruited as Allied spies and come to Lisbon, Portugal, in the midst of World War II, both of them seeking answers in their own lives. What unfolds is a fast-paced roller-coaster ride of deceit, espionage, danger, and --- above all --- the unbreakable bonds of friendship.
And according to Kelly Rimmer, “This is absolutely gripping and impeccably researched historical fiction --- perfect for fans of Kate Quinn’s THE ROSE CODE and Kristin Hannah’s THE NIGHTINGALE.”
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Hank Phillippi Ryan, whose latest thriller, ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS, follows Tessa Calloway, a debut author on a book tour who discovers she may have a stalker. The idea for the book, which will be a Bets On pick, came from Hank’s own experiences on book tours, including the realization that her public schedule and locations potentially could be misused for harmful purposes.
Hank discusses the creative process behind the novel, including how Annabelle's voice unexpectedly emerged while she was writing and became integral to the plot. She also shares insights about the audiobook narration by Sarah Mollo-Christensen, emphasizing the challenge of finding a voice that effectively immerses readers in the story. And she reveals details about a new book that is in progress.
Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. Find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book in the next newsletter. In the meantime, we are sharing the discussion guide and our Bookreporter review.
I also had the pleasure of interviewing Sharon Kurtzman about her debut novel, THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA, which is inspired by her mother, aunt and grandmother's experiences as Holocaust survivors. The book, which is my latest Bets On pick, follows two timelines. In 1946 Vienna, Chana Rosenzweig navigates a dangerous love triangle while working in a hotel kitchen and pursuing her passion for baking. In 2018, Zoe Rosenzweig, a food writer, becomes obsessed with uncovering her family's history.
Sharon talks about her research on postwar Vienna, where she learned that the city was divided into four sections governed by the Allied powers. She emphasizes the importance of food and baking in the story, using it as a creative outlet and a means to convey the characters' experiences. Sharon shares her passion for baking, particularly her obsession with perfecting chocolate chip cookies and chocolate pecan pie as a teenager with one twist on an ingredient. Her website features an enhanced discussion guide that includes recipes.

ALL THE WAY TO THE RIVER: Love, Loss, and Liberation, Elizabeth Gilbert’s first nonfiction book in a decade, is Oprah’s Book Club pick for September.
Oprah says, “While married, [Elizabeth Gilbert] falls in love with her best friend, Rayya, who has just been diagnosed with cancer. Then she divorces her husband…and loses herself in the relationship and then spirals down down down until she no longer recognizes herself or her partner…. With EAT PRAY LOVE, Elizabeth Gilbert started a movement. This new memoir is just as powerful --- raw, unflinching, and deeply healing. She bares her soul, sharing her truth so openly, she offers readers the courage to face their own.”
In front of a live audience at a Starbucks café in Seattle, Gilbert talked about the book with Oprah, who called it “the bravest thing I've ever seen.” Click here for their discussion and here for the guide, which we are featuring this month.
We also have added guides for these four books:
-
MOTHER MARY COMES TO ME: Arundhati Roy’s first memoir is an intimate and inspirational account of how she became the person and the writer she is --- shaped by circumstance, but above all by her complex relationship to the extraordinary, singular mother she describes as “my shelter and my storm.”
-
TO THE MOON AND BACK: Spanning three decades and several continents, Eliana Ramage’s first novel is this month’s Reese’s Book Club pick. Reese calls it “[a] breathtaking debut about family, identity, and love across generations…. [W]e truly do love this book to the moon and back!”
-
THE HEIR: Destined for a life beyond her wildest dreams, born fifth in succession to the throne, and determined to get to the bottom of a most foul puzzle, the young Princess Victoria vows to solve the mystery of a dead man scandalously discovered on the grounds of Kensington Palace --- by her! --- in Darcie Wilde’s latest novel.
-
TANGLED DARKNESS: When a psychiatric clinical assistant turns up dead, Dr. Leslie Schoen finds herself a suspect in the case --- and facing allegations that could destroy her career --- in MM Desch’s latest psychological thriller, which is perfect for fans of Freida McFadden, Lucinda Berry and Patricia Cornwell.
Patrick Ryan’s much-talked-about adult fiction debut, BUCKEYE, is September’s Barnes & Noble and “Read with Jenna” book club picks. Jenna calls it a “once-in-a-decade novel” and says, “We meet two families whose lives intersect in ways that upon Page 1 you could never expect. We watch as America changes and these two families’ lives change.”
B&N has two virtual programs scheduled with Patrick. On Tuesday, September 23rd at 7pm ET, Patrick will be in conversation with Ann Patchett. You can purchase a ticket by clicking here. And on Tuesday, October 7th at 3pm ET, Patrick will talk about the book with Lexie Symth, B&N’s Fiction Category Manager, and Brenda Allison, Frontlist Buyer at B&N. Click here to sign up for this free event.
I had the pleasure of meeting Patrick at a publisher luncheon, and he talked about his extensive research for BUCKEYE.
THE BOOK OF LOST HOURS by Hayley Gelfuso is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club pick. This debut novel follows two remarkable women moving between postwar and Cold War-era America and the mysterious time space, a library filled with books containing the memories of those who bore witness to history.

MOTHER MARY COMES TO ME by Arundhati Roy
MOTHER MARY COMES TO ME by Arundhati Roy (Memoir)
MOTHER MARY COMES TO ME is a soaring account of how Arundhati Roy became the person and the writer she is. “Heart-smashed” by her mother Mary’s death in September 2022 yet puzzled and “more than a little ashamed” by the intensity of her response, Roy began to write, to make sense of her feelings about the mother she ran from at age 18, “not because I didn’t love her, but in order to be able to continue to love her.” And so begins this astonishing, sometimes disturbing and surprisingly funny memoir of the author’s journey from her childhood in Kerala, India, where her single mother founded a school, to the writing of her prize-winning novels and essays, through today.

THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA by Sharon Kurtzman
THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA by Sharon Kurtzman (Historical Fiction)
I, like many of you, have read my fair share of fiction about World War II. What my historical education lacks is what happened after the war. I am not naïve. I did not think that people left the concentration camps, bought new clothes, and had a few good meals to celebrate their liberation. But I also was not sure how their stories would unfold. THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA gave me the chance to see how one fictional family navigated the weeks and months after their release.
The book has its history rooted in stories that Sharon Kurtzman’s mother shared with her of how her family survived after the fighting ended. They lived in Vienna, a city that was controlled by four different countries (I did not know this) and where violence still sprang up, food was scarce, and the black market was in full operation.
