Last night, Sharon Kurtzman joined our book group discussion about THE LOST BAKER OF VIENNA via Zoom. She explained how a conversation with her mother about her mother's life after World War II in Vienna sparked her interest in writing this book. It was a story that she nurtured for a few decades before she wrote it.
Sharon walked us through her “on the ground” research where she visualized the story unfolding, as well as the long journey that it took to write the book. While the story had been percolating inside her, it took the COVID-19 pandemic to make her realize that she had to tell her mom’s story lest it be lost. While the book is not biographical, she talked about all of the ways her mother’s experiences guided her storytelling. (Note the family photos behind her, which she spoke about.)
We had questions for Sharon, and we talked about the amazing recipes that are included in the enhanced discussion guide. We were all too busy to bake before the meeting, but trust that she had us all salivating over the ideas she shared.
Sharon let us know that she is working on the second draft of her next book, with just three scenes to be developed. Then she will work on the next set of revisions. We are looking forward to hearing more about that!
We will be reading THE CORRESPONDENT next. I loved this book on audio (it is a really stellar production), and I talk about my interview with Virginia Evans below. I am going to check to see if she is available to meet with us. I have decided that it never hurts to ask!
Included in this update is our 25th Anniversary Book Group Survey. We did a small survey during the pandemic, but we have not done something in-depth in the past 10 years. We decided that setting up for our 25th anniversary celebration that will run through October (wait until you see what we have planned for that!) is the perfect time to ask you to weigh in on what’s happening with your book group today.
We are awarding one reader who finishes the survey a $250 gift card to the bookstore of their choice, while three others will win a $50 gift card to the bookstore of their choice. The survey will be open until Friday, October 31st at noon ET.
Looking at the last big survey, it was interesting to see how much has changed. Remember meetings via Skype, or phone calls with authors? I heard the funniest stories from one bestselling author about talking to a book group “back in the day.” She was talking on the phone while doing laundry, and suddenly the machine started to agitate. She was mid-sentence as she tried to cover up the sound. Another time, she was abandoned as the group went out to the pool to continue their discussion and forgot about her on the phone!
Last Thursday night, Amy Neff joined us for September's “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event to discuss her debut novel, THE DAYS I LOVED YOU MOST, an international bestseller and a Bets On pick that is now available in paperback.
Amy worked on this book for more than a decade, and it all started with her writing in a notebook in Central Park when she was in her 20s. She talks about her own extended family and how their beach vacations (where picnics were held in the garage) influenced her writing about a long marriage, though she is only in her late 30s. Amy also shares that she developed the chapters with the three children later in the writing process.
There is a lot of conversation about the ending. Readers want to know if that had changed over the course of Amy's writing. Click here to watch the video.

As I mentioned earlier, my latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Virginia Evans. Her debut novel is THE CORRESPONDENT, and we’re featuring the discussion guide in this newsletter.
Virginia always saw the book as having an epistolary format, and she wrote it as readers are seeing it, with one letter after another. I thought this style worked for the storytelling as it allowed for pacing and for different aspects of Sybil’s life, and the world as she knows it now, to be explored. Virginia loved that I picked up on one detail that no one else had mentioned in an interview or a review.
I listened to the audiobook recording, which features a 13-person ensemble cast, and enjoyed it so much that it will be a Bets On selection in audio. It already has been named an AudioFile Earphones Award Winner and an Audible Best of the Year (So Far) selection.
In a moment of what seemed like kismet, THE CORRESPONDENT was announced as a New York Times bestseller just a few hours after I spoke with Virginia, though the book was first published back in April. This growth in readership is quite unusual, so it truly says something about the story and the building word of mouth for it. Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast.
In this newsletter, we are featuring the guide for Victoria Redel’s latest novel, I AM YOU, which is a People Best New Book Pick
At eight years old, Gerta Pieters is dressed as a boy and put to work in the service of the Oosterwijcks, a genteel Dutch family. When Gerta catches the eye of the young Maria Oosterwijck, Gerta is asked to accompany her to Amsterdam, where Maria will study under a noteworthy Dutch artist. Inspired by the little that is known about skilled still-life painter Maria van Oosterwijck’s life, this book is a love story, a meditation on gender, and an ode to artistic creation.
Be sure to take a look at our Featured Guide page, which has links to discussion questions, critical praise, info about the author, and more.

Yesterday we learned that ATMOSPHERE by Taylor Jenkins Reid is the Target Book of the Year. Taylor announced the big news on her Instagram. Here's what she had to say about it:
“I am so excited to show you all this special edition of ATMOSPHERE, which includes a Q&A with my editor, some extremely cool visuals (IMHO), and excerpts from my notes during the research and plotting of the book. That last little addition feels especially vulnerable and thrilling to share. You'll see that I struggled at first to understand what I was doing, including just how basic my understanding of the Space Shuttle was, and how much help I needed to grasp the specifics of what Vanessa had to do. But I love looking back on these pages and remembering those early days when I was still learning who these women were and what they were up against.”
Read on, and have a great discussion with your group!

Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS by Hank Phillippi Ryan
ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS by Hank Phillippi Ryan (Psychological Thriller)
Many of you have been to author events and have loved the opportunity to meet with writers and hear them discuss their work --- and, yes, sign books. So what really happens on a book tour? Hank Phillippi Ryan uses this as the foundation for her latest thriller, ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS.
Tessa Calloway is a debut author whose novel, All This Could Be Yours, has garnered lots of attention. She already had a following on social media when she ditched her job a few years ago to take back her “one life.” People understood this, so when her book appeared, readers were ready to buy it and come out to meet her. In the novel, Annabelle Brown, like Tessa, does not take her boss’s offer to have it all. Instead, she grabs life with two hands.
But readers do not know that Annabelle is based on someone from Tessa’s past. As she is on the road, it feels like her past may be catching up with her. Is she just sleep-deprived from her rigorous tour, or is more going on here?

Please note that these titles, for which we already had the guides when they appeared in hardcover, are now available in paperback:
THE BLUE HOUR by Paula Hawkins (Psychological Thriller)
A masterful novel that is as page-turning as it is unsettling, THE BLUE HOUR recalls the sophisticated suspense of Shirley Jackson and Patricia Highsmith and cements Paula Hawkins’ place among the very best of our most nuanced and stylish storytellers.
INTERMEZZO by Sally Rooney (Fiction)
INTERMEZZO is an exquisitely moving story about grief, love and family --- but especially love --- from the global phenomenon Sally Rooney.
THE SEQUEL by Jean Hanff Korelitz (Psychological Thriller)
With her signature wit and sardonic humor, Jean Hanff Korelitz gives readers an antihero to root for while illuminating and satirizing the world of publishing in this deliciously fun and suspenseful read, the eagerly awaited follow-up to THE PLOT.
