Never Miss a Contest or a Promotion!
Follow and Like Us on Social Media
February is “the short month,” so we all are cramming meetings into a month with two or three fewer days than others. That means that we all need to read and talk faster! We have no shortage of great ideas for your book group. So get ready to take some notes!
We are kicking things off with a BIG contest.
With dry January behind us, we are raising a glass to Brisa Carleton’s debut novel, LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY, and featuring it in a very special contest. You may remember that I raved about this book when it released last November. It was a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick, and I had a wonderful conversation with Brisa about it.
My book group discussed LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY in December, and we enjoyed our conversation about it so much that we asked Brisa to join us for our January meeting so we could ask her some questions. It was a really fun night, and from that, the idea for this contest came about!
Brisa was inspired to write this dual-timeline novel after visiting The Savoy in London more than a decade ago. She saw a footnote about Ada Coleman --- a prominent mixologist at the hotel from 1903 to 1925 --- in a cocktail menu and was surprised that so little information existed about her.
Here are the contest details:
Three book groups will win up to 12 copies of LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY, and they will get to talk to Brisa in May or June. For those who may not know, Brisa is a three-time Tony Award-winning Broadway producer and investor who has been involved in shows such as Hamilton, Moulin Rouge and Beautiful. I am sure you can imagine just how fascinating a book group chat with her would be!
In addition, we are awarding 25 book group members a single copy of the book, with a promise that they will read it and give us their feedback on it. They also will tell their group members about the book and recommend that they discuss it in June, July or August.
To enter the contest, all you have to do is fill out this form by Monday, March 16th at noon ET. Good luck to everyone who enters!
Join Us on Thursday, February 26th
for Our Book Group Event with Lily King!
This is your last Reading Group Guides newsletter reminder to sign up for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event, which will take place on Thursday, February 26th at 8pm ET.
Our guest will be Lily King, and she will discuss her most recent novel, HEART THE LOVER, an instant New York Times bestseller and a Bets On selection.
After I talk to Lily, we will give readers the chance to share a question for her on screen. We have special sign-in directions for these attendees, and they will get to chat with Lily in our “backstage green room” before the program starts. Then we will turn to questions that have been dropped into Zoom’s Q&A feature.
If you would like to ask Lily a question, please fill out this form by Thursday, February 26th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city, state, email address and phone number, as well as your question. And indicate if you would like to be on camera or off.
I interviewed Lily when HEART THE LOVER first came out and told her that I looked forward to having her appear on a “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program. It should be a great evening, so do plan to join us!
We have two new “Bookreporter Talks To” interviews to share with you in this newsletter.
First up is Ashley Elston, whose latest book, ANATOMY OF AN ALIBI, is a New York Times bestseller and a Bets On pick. Ashley reveals that she rewrote the book three times, changing structure, timeline and point of view. She shares the character she began with, and how the others evolved, as well as what stayed the same from the very start.
Ashley was thinking about the Murdaugh family murders and how technology can help with an alibi as much as it can hurt it. She confirms that she is under contract for a new book and updates us on what is happening with the film/TV development deal for her 2024 novel, FIRST LIE WINS.
Click here to watch the interview or here to listen to the podcast. In his review on Bookreporter, Ray Palen calls the book “a solid and twisty read that is full of surprises right up until the last sentence.” Click here to read the full review and here for my Bets On commentary.
I also had the pleasure of talking to Wendy Walker about her new thriller, BLADE, an upcoming Bets On pick that is set in the world of competitive figure skating. The novel, which draws from Wendy's personal experience as a competitive figure skater (she trained in Colorado from ages 13 to 16), features alternating timelines that follow attorney Ana Robbins, who returns to her former skating facility to defend a young skater accused of murder.
Wendy talks about the book’s themes of isolation, the pressure on young athletes, and the psychological impact of competitive sports. The dual-timeline structure allows readers to see connections between past and present events. And with the Winter Olympics airing, she touches on the importance of nailing the triple axel.
Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. In her Bookreporter review, Rebecca Munro says that the book’s premise “is every bit as knife-sharp as the skates it glides on” and that BLADE is “Wendy Walker at her very best.” I agree! Find out why I’m betting you’ll love this book just as much as Rebecca and I did in our late February newsletter.
Mary Kubica’s new thriller, IT’S NOT HER, is about a woman who finds her brother and sister-in-law murdered in their next-door vacation cottage, her niece inexplicably missing, and her nephew asleep and unharmed in his bed. She must do everything in her power to find out what happened and locate her niece as she pieces together her family’s whereabouts.
Pamela Kramer has this to say in her review on Bookreporter: “In addition to an intriguing plot and several people who might be guilty, Kubica creates the perfect amount of tension. The alternating narratives are extremely effective and add to the intensity of the story…. Kubica also presents a twist after the shocking resolution that I am sure no one will guess.” Click here to read more of Pam’s thoughts on the book and here for the discussion guide.
IT'S NOT HER will be a Bets On selection, and I will share my commentary soon!
This month’s Reese’s Book Club pick is IN HER DEFENSE by debut novelist Philippa Malicka. Reese says, “There’s this crazy celebrity trial, so everyone in the world is watching this woman, Anna. Her daughter…doesn’t speak to her anymore. Anna thinks that her therapist got in her daughter’s head and had her remember fake trauma. You don’t know what’s real, and you don’t know who to trust. I couldn’t put it down.”
Bookreporter reviewer Kate Ayers calls the book a “striking debut” and “an immersive psychological thriller involving manipulated relationships.” She goes on to say, “IN HER DEFENSE is a compulsive page turner. Does it end on the right foot? It’s up to you to find out.” Click here for the full review and here for the guide.
We also have added guides for these five books:
-
GOOD PEOPLE: Told through a kaleidoscope of perspectives, Patmeena Sabit’s debut novel, which is February’s Barnes & Noble Book Club pick, is a provocative and haunting story of family --- sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, and the communities that claim us as family in difficult times.
-
THE EXES: In Leodora Darlington’s debut thriller, which is this month’s “Good Morning America” Book Club selection, a woman’s seemingly perfect romantic life is on the verge of collapse as she uncovers a hidden history surfacing dark secrets that have deadly consequences.

-
FIREFLIES IN WINTER: Eleanor Shearer, the author of the "Good Morning America" Book Club pick RIVER SING ME HOME, has penned a gripping novel of two young women fighting for survival on the edge of the wilderness, and the love that simultaneously sustains them and threatens their very existence.
-
THE INHERITANCE: Now in paperback, Trisha Sakhlecha’s first book to be published in the US is February’s Target Book Club pick. This chilling locked-room mystery transports readers to one of Scotland’s rugged, isolated islands, where a luxury resort becomes the scene of a shocking family reunion.
February’s “Read with Jenna” Book Club pick is ONE & ONLY, Maurene Goo’s adult debut that tells the story of a woman thrown a curveball by fate and the family secret that will make her question everything. Jenna says that this is “the perfect book for February. Not only is February the month of love, and this is a romance, but it's also one of the shortest months of the year --- and this book flies. You'll open it and you'll read it in one sitting.”

LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY by Brisa Carleton (Historical Fiction)
Six years ago, Cinnamon Scott was a young writer on the rise in New York City. But since the sudden loss of her parents, she's been stuck in place. Despite their tragic loss, she and her older sister, Rosemary, have always had each other to lean on. But now, with Rosie living in London and about to give birth to twins, Cinnamon feels more lost than ever.
When Rosie is put on bed rest, Cinnamon flies to her sister's side, where she's temporarily living at The Savoy. She’s immediately swept away by the beauty and history of the legendary hotel and its famed American Bar. When the late-shift bartender tells her the story of Ada Coleman, the woman who crafted the cocktail recipes The Savoy popularized in its famous handbook a century ago, Cinnamon is inspired by the bartender's vivid stories of Ada's fearlessness and can't understand why Ada's name is nowhere to be found.

MY HUSBAND’S WIFE by Alice Feeney
MY HUSBAND'S WIFE by Alice Feeney (Psychological Thriller)
Alice Feeney is one of those authors who is known to spin me around. There are few times that I guess where she is headed. With MY HUSBAND’S WIFE, she had me questioning everything, starting with the title. I, like many others, think that this is her most brilliant book yet.
We begin with Eden Fox, who arrives at her home, Spyglass, to learn that her key will not open the door. Properly annoyed, she knocks loudly. Another woman answers, and she is clear that she is Eden Fox and the other woman must be mad. This claim is confirmed by her husband, Harrison, who says that he has no idea who this person is.
