Snow & Book Groups: Not a Great Fit
We will be holding our February book club meeting in March. Snow marred our February plans as yet another storm hit. I am betting other groups had the same issue. We are reading THE BOOK CLUB FOR TROUBLESOME WOMEN by Marie Bostwick. It would be fun to define who your book group is for!
The morning after we hold meetings at my house, my husband likes to collect empty wine bottles. He jokes that he uses that to gauge a successful book group.
Lily King joined us on Thursday evening for February’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event to discuss her most recent novel, HEART THE LOVER, which is an instant New York Times bestseller and a Bookreporter.com Bets On pick.
Eight readers joined us on camera to ask Lily questions about the plot and its various twists (spoilers ARE included), as well as character development, her writing process, the book’s title and cover, and much more. Other members of the audience, who submitted their questions via Zoom’s Q&A feature, wanted to know about her involvement with the production of the audiobook (which is narrated by Rebecca Lowman) and what she’s most proud of about HEART THE LOVER.
Click here to watch the video or here to listen to the podcast. Lily is currently on vacation, so we really appreciate her taking the time to join us and the thoughtful replies that she gave to a myriad of questions. Tom and I loved the lively conversation and the enthusiasm that our readers continue to show for this book.
I talked to Lily about HEART THE LOVER back in October. If you would like to check out this spoiler-free interview, you can watch or listen to it.
Our next “Bookaccino Live” Book Group guest will be Patrick Ryan. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 25th at 8pm ET, and you can sign up here for it.
We will talk about his New York Times bestselling debut novel, BUCKEYE. This “Read with Jenna” Book Club pick and Bets On selection appeared on numerous “Best Books of the Year” lists in 2025. It weaves the intimate lives of two midwestern families across generations, from World War II to the late 20th century.
I will interview Patrick and then will turn to readers who would like to share a question for him on screen (we have special sign-in directions for these attendees, and they will get to chat with Patrick in our “backstage green room” before the program starts), followed by audience questions.
If you would like to ask Patrick a question, please fill out this form by Wednesday, March 25th at noon ET. Be sure to include your name, city, state, email address and phone number, as well as your question. And indicate if you would like to be on camera or off.
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Sadeqa Johnson, who discusses her new novel, KEEPER OF LOST CHILDREN. Like her earlier two works of historical fiction, it’s a Bets On selection. Sadeqa shares that she found a piece about the Brown Babies when she was doing research for THE HOUSE OF EVE. The story was calling to her, but she put it aside to finish that book.
She learned more about the Brown Babies and Mabel Grammer, the inspiration for her character Ethel Gathers, in both Ebony and Jet magazines. Bringing these children from Germany to the United States brought lots of press; there is even a documentary called Brown Babies: The Mischlingskinder Story.
Sadeqa talks about crafting the three different characters the way that she did and the challenge of tying their stories together. She also expresses her love of the audiobook, which features three voice actors --- Ariel Blake, Karen Chilton and Adam Lazarre-White --- the latter of whom she came to admire when he narrated S. A. Cosby’s work.
Click here to watch the interview or here to listen to the podcast. And my Bets On commentary is here.
There’s still plenty of time to enter our contest featuring Brisa Carleton’s debut novel, LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY, which is a 2025 Bets On pick. Set amongst the glittering backdrop of London's iconic Savoy hotel, a young woman is forced to confront her troubled past as she uncovers the story of the hotel’s first female bartender who has been erased from the history books.
Three book groups will win up to 12 copies of LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY, and they will get to talk to Brisa in May or June. We also are awarding 25 book group members a single copy of the book. We ask that they give us their feedback on the book, tell their group members about it, and recommend that they discuss it in June, July or August.
Brisa was a fabulous remote guest for our book group, and she loves discussing LAST CALL AT THE SAVOY. She has won three Tonys for her theater work and was an investor in Hamilton. So yes, our conversation did turn to talking about The Great White Way, “coined in 1902 to describe the dazzling white electric lights and billboards illuminating the area” and the home for theater.
To enter the contest, be sure to fill out this form by Monday, March 16th at noon ET.
Oprah’s Book Club kicks off its 30th anniversary year by selecting Tayari Jones’ new novel, KIN, as its first pick of 2026. You may remember that Oprah selected Tayari’s previous novel, AN AMERICAN MARRIAGE, as one of her picks when it released in 2018.
Here’s what Oprah says about the book:
“Set in the 1950s in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, [KIN is] the story of two girls who both lost their mothers as infants. Vernice and Annie refer to themselves as ‘cradle friends’ since they slept together in the same cradle as babies. But they eventually take on different paths. Vernice heads to Spelman College, and Annie sets off on an unforgettable, sometimes heartbreaking journey to find the mother who abandoned her.
“This is a masterpiece of a novel that contemplates the meaning and the complications of love and friendship, and it will live with you long after you turn the last page.”
Oprah and Tayari recently talked about KIN with an audience of readers in New York City. Click here for their discussion.
According to Bookreporter reviewer Jana Siciliano, “KIN is an exceptionally affecting work that is grounded in truth --- truth about racism, truth about womanhood, truth about the ties that bind us. Vernice and Annie can now join the pantheon of great fictional heroines whose journeys will reflect for generations to come a story etched in the stones of history.” Click here for the discussion guide and here to read the full review.
I am listening to KIN, and I really am enjoying it. The voice actors, Angel Pean and Ashley J. Hobbs, are SO good!
When Polly is given an ancestry test kit as a joke in Anna Quindlen’s new novel, MORE THAN ENOUGH, the results match her with a stranger. Although it seems clear that this match is a mistake, she can’t help but comb through her own family history for answers. Then, when it seems that the book club circle of four will become three, Polly learns how friendships can change your life in the most profound ways.
Eileen Zimmerman Nicol has this to say in her Bookreporter review: “Polly narrates her own story with all the self-knowledge that a student of literature brings to the table. The themes are serious, but in Anna Quindlen’s skillful hands, they’re not boring or heavy…. MORE THAN ENOUGH explores and ultimately resolves Polly’s predicament. Her existential questions keep us reading until the satisfying conclusion.” Read more of Eileen’s thoughts on the book here, and check out the guide here.
I will be attending Anna's event tonight that Thunder Road Books is hosting. If any of you are there, please say hi!
Terah Shelton Harris, the acclaimed author of ONE SUMMER IN SAVANNAH and LONG AFTER WE ARE GONE, is back with WHERE THE WILDFLOWERS GROW. A young woman, freshly escaped from prison, seeks a new life --- and a tender new love --- on a rural Alabama flower farm, if only she can escape the ghosts of her past.
Rebecca Munro has our review on Bookreporter and calls it “a gorgeous, tremendously balanced and measured novel.” She goes on to say, “I’ve yet to come across a character of [Harris’] I haven’t loved, but Leigh stands in a class of her own…. If you’re feeling wounded, depleted or in need of hope, you’ll find it here, where the wildflowers of Harris’ mind not only grow, but nourish.” Click here for the guide and here for the full review.
I just got a copy of WHERE THE WILDFLOWERS GROW. I am intrigued by the concept of it.

-
BEST BOY: Allison Pataki has this to say about Deborah Goodrich Royce’s new psychological thriller: “Royce delivers a nuanced drama over multiple timelines and wrestles with the weight of secrets --- those we keep from others, but especially those we keep from ourselves.”
On Bookreporter, we’re running a special contest for WHEN THE CRANES FLY SOUTH by debut novelist Lisa Ridzén. This runaway international bestseller, for which we featured the guide in January, is a Bets On selection and received the 2024 Swedish Book of the Year Award.
Here’s the book's premise: Bo is running out of time. These days, his quiet existence is broken up only by daily visits from his home care team. Fortunately, he still has his beloved elkhound, Sixten, to keep him company. But his son is adamant about taking the dog away as he feels Bo has grown too old to properly care for him. The threat of losing Sixten stirs up a whirlwind of emotion, leading Bo to take stock of his life, his relationships, and the imperfect way he has expressed his love over the years.
We have 25 copies of WHEN THE CRANES FLY SOUTH to give away to those who would like to read the book, answer some questions about it, share their comments, and submit a question for Lisa. To enter, please fill out this form by Friday, March 13th at noon ET. All winners must be committed to sending us both their feedback and their question for Lisa by Monday, April 13th.
I am planning to chat with Lisa during an upcoming “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program (date and time to come), where I will be asking her some of these questions. For those winners who would like to ask Lisa their question on camera, we would be happy to have you join us. And for those who already have read the book, you also can sign up to attend this event.
We love bringing you programs like this for books that we feel are special and want on your radar.

We will kick off the feature by giving away THAT’S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR, which is inspired by the classic TV sitcom “The Golden Girls.” It’s also the first novel that Wade Rouse, the bestselling author of five memoirs, has written under his own name; his previous novels were written under his grandmother’s name, Viola Shipman. Bookreporter.com Bets On:
KEEPER OF LOST CHILDREN by Sadeqa Johnson
and BLADE by Wendy Walker
KEEPER OF LOST CHILDREN by Sadeqa Johnson (Historical Fiction)
Sadeqa Johnson has an interesting origin story for KEEPER OF LOST CHILDREN. While doing research for her last book, THE HOUSE OF EVE, she came across an article about Mabel T. Grammer, an African American journalist whose “Brown Baby Plan” led to the adoption of 500 mixed-race German orphans after World War II.
Sadeqa tucked that idea away, but she pulled it back up after she submitted THE HOUSE OF EVE. From reading about this one woman’s vision for rescuing these children, she created her character Ethel Gathers, the wife of an American Officer assigned to Occupied Germany in the 1950s.

BLADE by Wendy Walker (Psychological Thriller)
I was able to immerse myself in the world of competitive ice skating thanks to Wendy Walker’s latest thriller, BLADE. Inspired by Wendy’s personal experiences as a competitive figure skater (she trained in Colorado from ages 13 to 16), the book captures what it is like to be a teen living on her own as she aims to shine in a sport that so many attempt and fail at.
Wendy draws on the joy, stress and loneliness of these young ladies, who are labeled “orphans” as they do not have parents with them. She also portrays the moms who have traveled with them and are obsessed with their skating.
