Our Fifth Anniversary
|
We celebrate the 5th Anniversary of ReadingGroupGuides.com this month. Thank you for reading and celebrating this milestone with us. We currently have 1,620 guides available and last month nearly 200,000 unique visitors came to the website. Since we know from our research that book clubs have approximately 12 members in them, this site potentially has an impact on more than 2,400,000 readers each month. As we add guides and develop special features to surround them, we always keep our readers --- and their groups --- top of mind.
Over the past five years we have featured profiles of more than 100 book clubs. Interested in having your group included? Please go here for information on what we need for your group to participate.
We started registering book clubs last May and I am pleased to share that to date we have more than 2,275 clubs registered with us. My goal is 2,500 by May 31st. Is your group registered with us yet? If not, register now! By the way my goal for this time next year is to have 5,000 registered groups, so if you know friends who are in book clubs, please forward this newsletter to them and encourage them to register. We'll consider this your anniversary gift to us!
Speaking of celebrations...this weekend mothers will be feted for Mother's Day. (For the record, I still am lobbying for Mother's Week!) When my boys were younger I told friends that I saw this holiday that included "warm fruit, burnt toast, and a card or gift with glue squished somewhere on it!" My boys now are old enough to chill the fruit, include something more exotic than toast on the breakfast tray and they usually have flowers or a plant as part of the celebration.
Since we know many Mother's Day presents are selected at the last minute, we've included some book selections in this newsletter that would make great gifts, as well as book discussions. One is Being Perfect by Anna Quindlen. This would be perfect for a Mother/Daughter Book Club discussion. Not in a mother/daughter book club? Well, may we suggest you try one just to discuss this book? We've spoken in the past about the "One Book Book Club," which is a great way to get your toe wet if you are not yet ready to commit to a monthly discussion. It's also a great way to have a discussion with a separate group of friends outside of your "usual" club. Never know where this might lead.
Also this month we add guides for Sue Monk Kidd's new one, The Mermaid's Chair, Oh My Stars by Lorna Landvik and Ya-Yas in Bloom by Rebecca Wells --- and 17 other titles to get your group reading. One book I enjoyed this month is The Frog Prince by Jane Porter. If your group is looking for a lighter summer read, this could fill the bill.
We ask you to answer our Audiobook Survey. Weigh in on how you listen --- or not. For answering, you can enter to win a Creative Labs Muvo MP3 player and a year of Audible's Premium Listener service that allows you to download two audiobooks each month. We'll be selecting one winner. The survey will be open through Friday, May 13th.
Enjoy May...and Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

A GREAT MOTHER/DAUGHTER Book Club Selection: BEING PERFECT by Anna Quindlen
|
What better way to celebrate Mother's Day than with a Mother/Daughter Book Club title? In Being Perfect, Anna Quindlen gives inspiring guidance on how to create a life that is uniquely yours, a life that's fulfilling despite its flaws, a life that comes from the center of you.
Quindlen shares wisdom about "the perfection trap," the price you pay when you become ensnared in it, and the key to setting yourself free. She believes that when your success looks good to the world but doesn't feel good in your heart, it isn't success at all.
She asks you to set aside your friends' advice, what your family and co-workers demand, and what society expects, and look at the choices you make every day. When you ask yourself why you are making them, Quindlen encourages you to give this answer: For me.

Special Feature and Contest: OH MY STARS by Lorna Landvik
|
From Lorna Landvik, the author of the bestselling book club favorite, Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons comes Oh My Stars, her most ambitious novel yet, with a cast of characters whose travails and triumphs you'll long remember. It is a tale of love and hope, bigotry and betrayal, loss and discovery -- as Violet, who's always considered herself a minor character in her own life story, emerges as a heroine you'll laugh with, cry with, and, most important, cheer for all the way.

THE RED CARPET: Bangalore Stories by Lavanya Sankaran
|
Wry humor and a delicious grasp of the friction between generations in Bangalore are the hallmarks of Lavanya Sankaran's fresh, deeply nuanced debut collection. "A potpourri of beggars and billionaires and determinedly laid-back ways," Bangalore, India's own Silicon Valley, is a crucible for prosperity, and at the chaotic crossroads between past and present. Here, American-trained professionals like Tara return to their old-fashioned families with heads full of Quentin Tarantino dialogue; a successful entrepreneur is shaken when his partner suddenly reneges on their plan to return to America; a traditional Indian mother slyly circumvents her Western-educated daughter's resistance to marriage; a neighborhood gossip is determined to discover what goes on behind the closed curtains of the hip young couple across the street; a chauffeur must reconcile his more orthodox credos with his employer's miniskirt lifestyle.
Witty, affectionate, and wonderfully wise, Lavanya Sankaran's first collection attests to her remarkable literary talent.

Mystery/Thriller Spotlight
|
Each month when we look at our traffic reports, we are surprised to see that the Mystery/Thriller genre is one of the most-searched. Why are we surprised? For years we have been told that these are not "the kind of titles" being read by book club readers. Clearly, our readers beg to differ on this subject.
As a result, this month we wanted to put a spotlight on three new titles available in this genre, The Closers by Michael Connelly, Citizen Vince by Jess Walter and Cast of Shadows by Kevin Guilfoile. And may we suggest that you take a look at our Mystery/Thriller section for more ideas?

Wrapped in Rain
by Charles Martin
Charles Martin's tremendous talent is evident throughout this story of the power of forgiveness and sacrifice. This fine novel exemplifies many of the best elements of evangelical Christian fiction. Wrapped in Rain is a tough and tender novel about weathering adversity and recognizing the many faces of love, regardless of who, how, where, or why. Love is a risk --- but it's far more dangerous to live without it. Read more here.
The Dead Don't Dance
by Charles Martin
Dylan and Maggie Stiles have a perfect life --- they have a terrific marriage and they are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. The day their son is born the world abruptly changes when Maggie lapses into a coma. Instead of Dylan celebrating he is now looking for himself --- and his faith --- a world without Maggie. This is the story of his finding his way back to life. Read more here.
